How many meatballs is a portion...?

I know this thread is probably going to get a load of people saying that they eat half a meatball and are full for 4 days, but curious to know how many meatballs you would plate up if having spaghetti and meatballs?

For myself and dp, i would probably use a full pack of 12, so 6 each (Blush) as it seemed a waste to leave some that wouldnt be enough for another meal, and would likely just get wasted.

However last night i plated up 4 each, and put the other 4 in the fridge (cooked and in sauce) and 4 seemed like a much better portion, where i was full but not uncomfortably so.

So whats the general consensus? How many meatballs is a portion??

@Crockof

Aww my thread didn't load properly, I've been out bingoed.
Sorry, I won the house jackpot this time Grin

The ones I buy in tescos come in packs of 24 so we would have 6 each. When I make them they always seem to be bigger so I would have less. But mine also always seem to fall apart

Husband has 4, I have 3, toddlers have 2.5

One is a substantial meal, no doubt!!!

riiiight, so suggesting a bit of veg, and that portion sizes are an issue in the world, (which we know they are) is exactly the same as your pitiful mockery about staring at one home made one?

I'm guessing the words nuance and moderation aren't words you use often

We buy the Tesco 24 pack so start off saying it’s 6 each but it usually ends up DH eating 2, me 4, and teens have 9 each.

6 seems very reasonable.

BornOnTwelthNight · 05/03/2021 17:07

Depends on size of pack and how many I’m cooking for. Usually aim for 6 each but Dd and I can usually only manage 4 but With Dh and (adult) ds, 6 is about right. Always have garlic bread as well.

bengalcat · 05/03/2021 17:09

4-6 and any spare end up in the dog

takingmytimeonmyride · 05/03/2021 17:11

There's six of us and obviously we share one meatball between us, for several meals. Wink

Or we have 4. We also buy them ready made from Tesco.

Though I have made my own before, but it turns out more expensive and takes far longer.

Vargas · 05/03/2021 17:15

We share one between a family of 5. Isn't that what everyone does? Grin

But seriously, the recipe I make they are a bit bigger than a golfball and I would dish up 5-6 each for teens and 4-5 each for DH and me.

Vargas · 05/03/2021 17:20

@Insert1x20p

I make my own meatballs, but only from a cow that I've hand reared and personally slaughtered. Anything else is pure laziness.
Well obviously. Grin
Saucery · 05/03/2021 17:26

6 each, as there are 12 in a pack (DH has vegetarian ones, same number ). I don’t have a lot of spaghetti with them, just lots of Parmesan and garlic bread.

But without 'masses of veg' and/or a 'massive salad' it's just junk, not to mention that you're not making your own. Grin

I find the prepared ones uncomfortably large to serve as spaghetti and meatballs, so I cut them in half and re-roll them. That way a tray of 12 easily feeds the four of us.

Saucery · 05/03/2021 17:29

Many years ago I went to a school friend’s house for tea and her Mum made beef burgers from scratch. They were ok, but I vowed there and then that my grown up life would probably be full of other stuff that wasn’t squishing mince into a ball with my bare hands.

Bloodybridget · 05/03/2021 17:33

Thanks for reminding me about spaghetti and meatballs, OP! I have new plans for the mince in the freezer! We probably have four each, but they're not tiny.

kowari · 05/03/2021 17:34

Depends on the size of the meatball surely? About 100g per person.

rawalpindithelabrador · 05/03/2021 17:41

Won't someone think of the NHS?!

InterfectoremVulpes · 05/03/2021 17:41

Anything between 6 and 10 depending on how big they are. I only have the meatballs and sauce and then top it of with a dollop of guacamole and half a tonne of cheese. Grin

Housewife2010 · 05/03/2021 17:58

I definitely recommend Nigella's meatball recipe. The meatballs are small and are poached in the tomato sauce rather than fried. We have about seven each.

endlesswicker · 05/03/2021 18:11

@steppemum

Just looking online, ikea's picture is just mash and meatballs. No veg to be seen at all and half the plate is meat.

And we wonder why people don't eat healthily

I don't know about you, but I'm not gullible or stupid enough to slavishly follow the photograph of the serving suggestion on everything I buy.

Besides, Sweden has a different climate to us, so their culinary heritage is necessarily different to ours.

Oblomov21 · 05/03/2021 18:18

I normally buy 6 x packs of 12. And cook 72 together. This does 3 meals for the 4 of us. So 6 each.

Maybe it's mashed swede.

3! I'm
Shocked at how many people eat in IKEA .. what's that about?!
