I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

If you are watching The Secret Life of Walter Mitty please make it the original version with the incomparable Danny Kaye. Such beautiful costumes and period set pieces, it's a film that would never be made now.

I've not seen that one, I just loved the remake. The scenery was amazing and it just had a nice feel.

Big Night (Stanley Tucci & Isabella Rosalini are in it!) - again don’t know anyone else who has seen it!

LizzieAnt · 08/03/2021 18:02

I absolutely love Big Night too!

I suspect people of a certain age will know this one. It is not joyful, but is a fantastic film - 37° 2 le matin, (Betty Blue). It was possibly the ONLY reason I did French A level

hippychick11 · 08/03/2021 18:12

I love a movie called Closer that was released in 2004 starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. It was a love story/ suspense type film

Needhelp101 · 08/03/2021 20:34

@midsomermurderess, thank you. That's this week's viewing sorted 😁

Bottl · 08/03/2021 20:36

Great thread - I've made a list of films to watch so thank you, OP.

From the ones already mentioned...
'Shag' and 'Cry Baby' are two of the 4 films of my youth...must have watched them a hundred times but don't know anyone outside of my group of school friends who've seen them.
'The Dressmaker' I saw on tv a few weeks ago, by accident. Loved it but sobbed at the unexpected sad bit - a lot.

My offering is 'Corinna, Corinna' and 'Boys on the side'. Coincidentally, Whoopi Goldberg is in both. No one I know has seen either. There's a scene in Boys on the Side that can make me weep just thinking about it.

I haven’t read all the suggestions, but I love the film Stayin Alive which is the sequel to Saturday night fever. Great soundtrack by the Bee Gees and great dancing. Plot is a little thin!

slooowdaysinlockdown · 08/03/2021 20:39

It's a new one but escape from Pretoria was unexpectedly brilliant

ChickenSoupForTheHmm · 08/03/2021 20:41

Corrina, corrina - Ray Liotta and Whoopi Goldberg absolutely beautiful film love it

Dancin thru the dark - willy Russell 1990 film never shown now and very hard to track down

Unlawful entry - kurt Russell and Ray liotta

ChickenSoupForTheHmm · 08/03/2021 20:41

Is this about Josef Locke? My granny loves him!
Bottl · 08/03/2021 20:51

@ChickenSoupForTheHmm - I've been reading this thread for days wondering if I'd see Corinna, Corinna mentioned and you posted within 5 minutes of me Grin

ChickenSoupForTheHmm · 08/03/2021 20:54

Didn’t realise it had been posted @botti it’s such a lovely film so well cast. I do have a massive soft spot for Ray Liotta obviously but the rest of the cast equally amazing. Such a gentle heartwarming film - FYI blowing at the lights really does make them change 😊😊

Bottl · 08/03/2021 20:57

Just realised I mis-spelt it Blush

I haven't watched it for years but have the dvd so might rewatch it on the weekend.

And yes, blowing the lights certainly does make them change Grin

ChickenSoupForTheHmm · 08/03/2021 21:00

I think I will watch it with my dd think she’s old enough to enjoy it now :)

AddictedtoCrunchies · 08/03/2021 21:02

Fanny and Elvis. Starring Ray Winstone. Top British film.

Bottl · 08/03/2021 21:08

Just watching 'Hidden Figures' - another one no one I know has seen

Quaagars · 08/03/2021 21:09

I love Pleasantville but no-one else really seems to know it!

clpsmum · 08/03/2021 21:13

Mississippi masala

Haywire, 2011, stars Gina Carano. She’s a contracted special agent type, absolutely kicks ass, does her own stunts, it’s brilliant because she leaps up walls and does lots of MMA moves. I know she’s been sacked by Disney for discussing shocking statements, don’t want to get into that except to say I’m gutted. I really liked her in the film the Mandalorian.

wanderlove · 08/03/2021 21:34

Dreams of A Life. An amazing docu that has just gone onto channel 4. It's about a beautiful vivacious women called Joyce who died but nobody noticed. It's so sad but the film feels like it recognises her and acknowledges her. It is so understated but also really moving and meaningful. I've watched it twice and just feel so incredibly sad that she could slip through the cracks. It's honestly amazing

midsomermurderess · 08/03/2021 22:15

The Last Seduction is another good one. From the 1980s, Linda Fiorintino and Bill Pullman. Film noir, femme fatale. I haven't seen it since. I wonder how it's held up.
