I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

In the spirit of "no-one else knows" Encounter at Raven's Gate stunned our group of cinema goers into post-cinema silence.

The Assassin with Bridget Fonda and Gabriel Byrne. I love that film. A drug addict is given a chance at a new life working as a government assassin, but as she learns how to fit in the real world, the appeal of her new role wears thin as d she needs to find a way to escape.

I also love Destination Wedding (it was on Netflix recently) with winona ryder and keanu Reeves. It's like a two hand play, lots of witty fast paced dialogue and not much else, but it made me laugh and laugh.

The Assassin is indeed a fabulous movie!

@Dunairbeanat

White Palace with Susan Sarandon and the gorgeous James Spader

Another truly bad film is Rancid Aluminium. I only went to see it because Rhys Ifans was in it. There were four of us in the cinema Smile

Rancid aluminium is the worst film I have ever seen. And I’ve seen a lot!

A film I love is One More Kiss, with Valerie Edmond and a young ish Gerard Butler and James Cosmo. I sobbed and sobbed and sobbed at it at the cinema and when it was randomly on bbc1 late one night a few years ago.

Phantom of the Opera with Robert Englund (real horror version). I may have traumatised my toddler sister for life watching this when baby sitting her (she was meant to be in bed but came into my room to ask me to take her to the toilet, just as he was peeling his skin off). She still can't watch it now in her 30s Grin but I've never bet anyone else who has seen that version.

Wild Hearts Cant be Broken
Disney movie set in the Depression era and diving horses. Based on a true story.

Theres a great channel on YouTube called Great old movies that has loads of films to watch free. Some old classics, some long forgotten. I mirror them on to the TV and snuggle up on rainy afternoons when I'm not working and have the house to myself!

The African Queen. On Sony movies classic right now!

The Frog Prince. an 1980s film set in Paris, not the musical of the same name.
I went on a French exchange at the time of seeing it and kissed a lot of frogs Grin hoping for a big romance.

Insomnia, the original version with Stellan Skarsgard is great.

Then Hollywood did an odd remake with Al Pacino and Robin Williams as the bad guy! (he was quite okay in it actually).

But the original is much better.

August Rush... it's absolutely magical. One of my favourites but I don't know anyone who has watched it. I had two girls, but if I had a boy, it would have been August.

The Cup. About young Buddhist monks in the Himalayas trying to get a TV as they are desperate to watch the 1998 World Cup Final.

dayswithaY · 07/03/2021 08:24

Phantom Thread with Daniel Day Lewis and the amazing Lesley Manville. Visually stunning, about a dressmaker in the 1950s.

Stir of Echoes is my go to comfort film, even though it's a supernatural thriller, it's still a lovely film.

The Wife with Glenn Close.

Already mentioned but I love - Love Honour and Obey, This Year's Love, as I just love London films.

Frankie and Johnny with Al Pacino and Michele Pfeiffer.

On my watch list, will give it a go now Grin

Funny, this is one I'd call a comfort film of mine! Great supernatural flick.

Also now looking for Love Honour Obey, thanks @dayswithaY 😊

Thank God! I thought I was the only person who's seen this - was beginning to wonder if I'd imagined it.

I’m glad Dancer in the Dark has been mentioned it’s an incredible film, absolutely beautiful but heartbreaking.
So many memories reading this thread. I also love Muriel’s wedding, strictly ballroom and brassed off (already mentioned)
I remember really liking the opposite of sex too which has just been mentioned.

There was also a film I remember seeing at cinema about 20 years ago which I really liked. It started in black and white, 50s American housewife but over time she fell in love with the black gardener and the film gradually moved into colour. Does any know what it was called??

DGRossetti · 07/03/2021 10:34

Jacobs Ladder ?

Ghislainedefeligonde · 07/03/2021 10:54

I’ve googled it and it’s Far from Heaven. I might rewatch it to see if I still like it!

Do you mean Pleasantville? Tobey Maguire & Reece Witherspoon are squabbling teenage siblings who get zapped into black & white 50s tv show Pleasantville. Over time they teach the residents to rebel against the social dictates of the time and colour starts to bloom. Joan Allen is the repressed 'mom' who is in love with Jeff Daniels, the soda shop owner. One of my favourite movies, some beautiful moments as the characters change.

Ghislainedefeligonde · 07/03/2021 10:57

Oops having watched its trailer I think I imagined the bit about starting in black and white. The colours of the film are incredible though!
