I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

Oh I love Jack and Sarah! I’m going to be referring back to this thread for great film suggestions. A few of my faves are here, Imitation of Life, Rosemary’s Baby, Gregory’s Girl and Truly Madly Deeply.
I’ve never met anyone who’s seen La Vie de Reveille des Anges, really intense French film I recommend it.

I’ve seen it, @tothesea! Very intense and, ultimately, very sad.

poundoflard · 06/03/2021 21:20

@DanielODonkey

Local hero is one of my absolute faves. The soundtrack is beautiful too.

Imbehindthemask · 06/03/2021 21:21

Searching. Wasn't sure about it all being played out online/calls, but I was hooked and didn't see the twist coming until near the end.

Laney79 · 06/03/2021 21:21

Benny & Joon. Johnny Depp is fab in it.

DGRossetti · 06/03/2021 21:22

@BikeRunSki

Jack and Sarah, with a very young Richard E Grant
Which lead on to Withnail & I and How To Get Ahead In Advertising
midsomermurderess · 06/03/2021 21:22

I've seen La Vie de Reveille des Anges too. The ending is heart stopping.

poundoflard · 06/03/2021 21:24

@Dunairbeanat

The book of Rancid Aluminium was good, and also A white Merc with fins by James Hawes.
I'll avoid the film though!

Graphista · 06/03/2021 21:36

Bogart fans will know but most don't as so many don't watch old movies now but I love

In a lonely place

Fabulous character driven piece

One people I know have heard of but rarely watch and the few that have watched have them admitted it was better than they thought it would be

Rock of ages

Very funny cheesy jukebox musical with Tom cruise as a sort of axl rose type

It's not well critiqued or anything but if you love your 80's rock and power ballads it's great fun

The Grifters - another brilliant modern noir, with John Cusack.

Yep fantastic film

@Docketpuo

Is it this one

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/WithoutaPaddle

Very funny

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Fugitives

Has just appeared on Disney+ lovely little film

LOVE muriels wedding - on that note In her shoes is a gorgeous film

Frequency - odd time-bending story with Dennis Quaid.

fabulous film. The tv series Netflix attempted was dire though

Adventures in Babysitting was a firm favourite when I was young. also on disney+ great wee film

On that note Born on the 4th July shows Tom Cruise can too.

Definitely

Have to say as a 48 year old I'm thinking a lot of you must simply be too young to remember when these films came out and how popular they were and often critically acclaimed too. Several Oscar winning movies for instance even best picture winners - hardly "barely known"

Eg badlands is so well known and regarded its frequently referenced and parodied

I'm on IMDb so much I just keep a window for it on my phone. For all those "what do I know them from?" Moments its perfect, but I also love looking up directors, writers, soundtracks, trivia, goofs...

Mr Holland's Opus (about a schoolteacher who wanted to be a rock composer)

Fabulous film but he didn't want to be a rock composer he wanted to compose classical music - the piece at the end is his composition. The sublime glenne headly (rip) was amazing in it too.

@CaffineismyBFF I literally wore out my vhs copy of FOTB 2 while pregnant with dd - both on Disney+ btw (no I'm not paid by them but I'm just loving how many excellent non typically Disney films are on there)

Inside I'm dancing is amazing

Barefoot In The Park - again great film, but how has nobody you know seen it? It's a very well known and well regarded film

Shallow Grave with Ewan McGregor and Christopher Eccleston

Dogma with Matt Damon and the much missed Alan Rickman

Fantastic films! Bloody Weinstein to blame for the fact nobody can make Dogma available to stream

Arlington Road - brilliant domestic terrorism thriller, Tim Robbins and Jeff Bridges, no idea why it’s not more popular

Yes it's a great film! Fabulous twist!

piefacedClique · 06/03/2021 21:36

Amelie 🥰🥰🥰

Laney79 · 06/03/2021 21:36

Serial Mom (Kathleen Turner) is gruesome but hilarious from memory.

Drop dead Fred with Rick mayall

Clueless

Field of Dreams

Heathers

Romeo & Juliet (baz luhrmann)

As a kid I loved: Mac and me, adventures in babysitting, space camp, Mrs Frisby and the rats of nimh, rags to riches...

Laney79 · 06/03/2021 21:37

Oooh oooh grosse pointe blank too

boobot1 · 06/03/2021 21:40

@Moondust001

"Harvey", with James Stewart - and old black and white film that I consider to be one of the greatest comedies ever made. Closely followed by "Arsenic and Old Lace", with Cary Grant.
Yes to both, some of my favourites
boobot1 · 06/03/2021 21:43

Now Voyager- Betty Davis
Imitation of life - Lana Turner
Waterloo Bridge - Vivien Leigh

notacooldad · 06/03/2021 21:43

I'm loving this thread.
Some films are new to me and some a bringing back some memories. I'm now thinking of other old favourites.
The documentary 'searching for sugar man' was hugely interesting as I wasn't aware if Rodriguez music before. Months later I saw him perform which was a privilege. If you don't know his story it's worth looking up.

'Biutiful' was pretty hard drama Maybe not jolly viewing but Javier Bardem was brilliant in it.
( mind you Javier Bardem is brilliant in pretty much everything!)

OliveHenry · 06/03/2021 21:44

@mamakoukla

White Nights, featuring Mikhail Baryshnikov. He can move exquisitely! Story is of a ballet dancer who had defected from Russia (which Baryshnikov did do), and on a flight finds himself back in Russia due to an emergency landing. He is held prisoner, is made to dance, and is paired with an American idealist (Richard Pryor). Story of their relationship evolution and I know there’s a hostage exchange at the end. Also features Helen Mirren IIRC
It was Gregory Hines (now sadly deceased), not Richard Pryor - I doubt he could have done the dancing!

Great film though - I must have watched it a dozen times, and have the soundtrack.

Sarahlou63 · 06/03/2021 21:44

Oh, yes -I'd forgotten about Drop Dead Fred. I remember playing it to a bunch of 'hard' Irishmen one Christmas Day. Not a dry eye in the house by the end!

notacooldad · 06/03/2021 21:47

Johnny Depp is fab in it.
Jonny Depp in also very good in Don Juan DeMarco and Ed Wood.

vampirethriller · 06/03/2021 21:52

Oh, Into the West with Gabriel Byrne, it's beautiful.
Death Proof is another.

Littlefiendsusan · 06/03/2021 21:52

The Princess Bride, I thought it was well known but none of my friends had heard of it.

alltoomuchrightnow · 06/03/2021 22:05

Serial Mom! Yes! Another one my houseshare was obsessed with. Pussy willows hahha it's all coming back

RoyalMush · 06/03/2021 22:32

Citizen Kane
The Sweet Smell of Success
Meet me in St Louis

nauticant · 06/03/2021 22:36

Anything by Hal Harley, but especially his earliest films. The pre-Internet ennui together with the small rays of hope for the human condition are perfect for these times. Also funny and great music.

A great summary @depopsa. The Unbelievable Truth will always be in my list of top films.

Mind you, I am baffled what the thread title "film you love that no-one else knows" has to do with many of the posts.
