I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

City of God. Only watched this because DD is studying film, probably wouldn’t have gone for it otherwise, but it’s mesmerising. The acting is outstanding even though lots of the ‘actors’ had never acted before and came from the favelas themselves. It’s probably my favourite ever film after Pan’s Labyrinth (which isn’t ‘unknown’ but if you’ve never seen it, you should)

Loads of great films here. A couple I really enjoyed were Prête-moi ta main a French film starring Charlotte Gainsbourg. A guy is totally hen pecked by his 5 sisters who want him to get married. He hires Gainsbourg's character to play a totally unsuitable fiancée to discourage his sisters. It was well done and really funny.

Another one I loved which nog many people seem to have heard of was The Dish about Australia's role in the lunar landings. Stars Sam Neill who I think is pretty much always brilliant.

I think this one is probably more famous: Pan's Labyrinth - strange fantasy set in Spain during the civil war. Quite haunting

City of God is a brilliant film.
I think I have probably watched Calamity Jane 20 times at least. It was one of those Sunday afternoon films that were always on growing up. If it was on, I watched it!

Morvern Callar - Samantha Morton, Lynne Ramsey film, sort of bleak but loved it. The Amazing Mr Blunden - a blast from my childhood past. I’m going to check out some of these this weekend Smile
The amazing Mr Blunden, wow! Wasn’t Diana Dors in it? Love to see it again.

Sweet Dreams 1985 , a film about Patsy Cline .

SinkGirl · 06/03/2021 18:10
**@SinkGirl* - Mr. Nobody - Brilliant, smart film, sadly never spoken to anyone who has seen it*

I saw it, quite by chance, on TV about 5 years ago and loved it.
I told my sister about it and bought the DVD for her but she said she just didn't get it.

I love a film that makes you think...
It’s so fantastic - but I get probably not everyone’s cup of tea!

Oh, and I meant Things To Do In Denver When You’re DEAD, not Dated 😂

Is that the one with Jessica Lange? Loved that film. My favourite line was "you've obviously confused me with someone who gives a shit" after one of many arguments with her husband.
wanderedlonelyasacloud · 06/03/2021 18:12

As a teenager I loved 'Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence'. I haven't watched it in a long time so it might be terrible now!

I just googled it and apparently it made a whopping $98,378 at the box office in 1998 Grin

Mara2021 · 06/03/2021 18:12

Some fabulous suggestions on here! Mine would be Carve Her Name with Pride (you will need hankies).

Wowthisisreal · 06/03/2021 18:13

@Bananalanacake that's the one I was going to say!

TangerineGreen · 06/03/2021 18:16

Joes apartment, it’s old now but when I watched it with my Dad we laughed and laughed so much! Not many people have ever heard of it

NeedToKnow101 · 06/03/2021 18:26

Tsotsi - a drama set in South Africa - about a boy who steals a car but also a baby by mistake. Brilliant.

City of God is excellent.

Ooh quite well known maybe but Secretary a strange and saucy film with whassername and what's hiname is great. (Sorry hungover).

tothesea · 06/03/2021 18:30

Ptang Yang Kipperbang led me to thinking about another film I watched round that time about girls who loved the footballer Danny Blanchflower. I googled it and it was Those Glory Glory Days and it starred Sara Sugarman who directed Very Annie Mary which has been mentioned in this thread! The main thing I remember is them singing Ooh Dan Dan ooh Danny Blanchflower...

mamakoukla · 06/03/2021 18:32

White Nights, featuring Mikhail Baryshnikov. He can move exquisitely! Story is of a ballet dancer who had defected from Russia (which Baryshnikov did do), and on a flight finds himself back in Russia due to an emergency landing. He is held prisoner, is made to dance, and is paired with an American idealist (Richard Pryor). Story of their relationship evolution and I know there’s a hostage exchange at the end. Also features Helen Mirren IIRC

mamakoukla · 06/03/2021 18:33

Worth watching just to see Baryshnikov dance

@NeedToKnow101 - Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader. Quite shocking at the time...
