I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

Not RTFT but ‘If Only’ with Lena Headey, Douglas Henshall, Mark Strong and Penelope Cruz. I think it suffered for being released at the same-ish time as the VERY similar ‘Sliding Doors’, but a much better film IMO. Also known as ‘The Man With the Rain in His Shoes’.

Wings of Desire. Long but worth it

drsambeckett · 06/03/2021 14:21

Some already mentioned - Secondhand Lions, Blithe Spirit and Little Man Tate

Shallow Grave with Ewan McGregor and Christopher Eccleston

Dogma with Matt Damon and the much missed Alan Rickman

Syriana with George Clooney and Matt Damon

Perfect Sense - Great with Ewan McGregor, though it is about a rampant virus.....

In Perfect sense they all lose their sense of smell . Only thing I can remember about it!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 06/03/2021 14:59

@Beefstew The Mirror Has Two Faces is the film I always mention in conversations about “the worst film I’ve ever paid actual money to see”. I saw it in the cinema 20+ years ago and am still cringing. Grin

@DGRossetti I suspect our formative cinematic years coincided - lots of the films you mention are ones I remember fondly. The thing that strikes me about Drugstore Cowboy is that Heather Graham didn’t appear to age at all between that and Austin Powers.

I’ve heard of, if not seen, most of the films mentioned on this thread - I must have had a very misspent late youth! My own missing films are “Metropolitan” - a Whit Stillman film about privileged New York teens obsessed with Jane Austen - and “The Gate of Heavenly Peace”, a fantastic documentary about the Tiananmen Square massacre and the events that led up to it. I saw it in the cinema twice but now it’s as if I dreamed it.

TeenTitan007 · 06/03/2021 15:03

Love me if you dare.

AGirlCalledJohnny · 06/03/2021 15:12

@SocraticJunkieWannabe

I wouldn't go so far as to day no-one knows them but two of my favourites which were not huge hits are The Way Way Back and Enough Said
Ah! The Way Way Back. It’s just so lovely. The cast is perfection. I’ve watched it several times over the years as my kids aged into it. It’s such a great modern coming of age movie, they’re so rare these days
Blackberrycream · 06/03/2021 15:35

I’m going to look for The Watcher in the Woods. It sounds interesting.

Mine are a mixed bag
Six Degrees of Separation- A New York society couple meet a mysterious young man and Will Smith in his first film role ( he is really good). It’s not an action movie!
In the Mood for Love- beautiful cinematography and sexy
A Christmas Story- it doesn’t seem to be popular here but was a Christmas tradition with Canadian friends. A boy wants a BB gun for Christmas. It’s funny.

VienneseWhirligig · 06/03/2021 15:38

Fever Pitch - Colin Filth as an Arsenal fan and teacher. One of my favourite films as a teen (not just to perve on CF).

There's also an Australian one called Frog Dreaming, that we watched in primary school as a treat once. It has the boy out of ET in it and is about a supernatural crane thing in a swamp. I've always remembered that crane rising out of the swamp, and the name of the film, but have never seen it anywhere since and nobody else remembers it so I thought I had made it up, until I was chasing to a friend from primary who also vaguely remembered the crane.

Jackie Brown Mr Holland’s Opus Blackball Here comes the Boom Candleshoe (a kids film starring a young Jodie Foster) Little Rascals (kids film) The Elephant Man

I was trying to think of the name Candleshoe to post it. Loved that film as a child.

Jackie Brown is brilliant too.

FlyingBurrito · 06/03/2021 15:45

@BenoneBeauty

I've also never been able to find it since and have searched a lot over the years!
@BenoneBeauty

I might have missed a post as the thread is very long but does your internet not have search engines Grin

@EssexLioness

Cry Baby. Quirky film featuring a very young Johnny Depp, before he hit the big time.
Love that film
Tittyfilarious · 06/03/2021 15:50

The Prophecy I love that film yet nobody I know has ever seen it all about a young girl hiding a soul from and war of angels.

SomeRandomerOnBumsnet · 06/03/2021 15:56

Has anybody seen the movie The Light between Oceans? I saw it on a flight a few years ago and sat there in tears snivelling away next to a probably quite alarmed stranger Blush

I’ve noticed Lion has been mentioned, its pretty mainstream, it was Oscar nominated, indeed the wonderful Dev Patel won an Oscar for his part. Not in the ‘films that no one else knows’ category for sure.

Uiseag · 06/03/2021 16:01

The Peanut Butter Falcon

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/03/2021 16:05

@Chimeraforce

Lion. Indian film, subtitles. A young boy ends up asleep on a train 1000s miles from home in India. Everyone is worried for him and the story is his journey back home. Taking in child traffickers, homelessness it's a beautiful film. I won't spoil the ending but it's heartwarming. True story too ❤️ watched alone as my family hate subtitles.
DH and I saw Lion in the cinema when it came out. As did most of our friends so I wouldn't say its a film that no one else has heard of. I thought it was brilliant.

One of my favourite films is a French one called Le Huitueme Jour. It must be 25 years old now. Makes me sob every time.

Unfucked · 06/03/2021 16:05

The Lunchbox starring Irfan Khan. It has just the same emotional vibe as The Remains of the Day. Subtitles normally put me off, but I really enjoyed this.

Unfucked · 06/03/2021 16:07

I can’t recall ever sobbing in a film as much as I did when they tell you at the end that Lion is a true story and show pictures of his birth mother.

Uiseag · 06/03/2021 16:07

Oh yes @Unfucked Lunchbox was brilliant

SinkGirl · 06/03/2021 16:13

@redspook

Welcome to Collinwood, eccentric and funny heist movie with William H Macy and others. Tag line - "Idiots Make Lousy Criminals".
I love this film! Also

I did a similar thread for TV recently and there’s some really good recommendations on there.

Haven’t RTFT but mine would be

Mr. Nobody - Brilliant, smart film, sadly never spoken to anyone who has seen it

King of Kong - hilarious documentary about obsessive Donkey Kong players - best real life baddie ever

Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dated - organised crime gone wrong

Arlington Road - brilliant domestic terrorism thriller, Tim Robbins and Jeff Bridges, no idea why it’s not more popular

AnneOfCleavage · 06/03/2021 16:44

Imitation of life - starring Sandra Dee (who Rizzo from Grease sings about) a white girl who befriends a black girl and how different their lives are as they grow up.

The Last Flight of Noah's Ark - a aeroplane runs out of fuel and lands on an Island where two Japanese pilots (who crashed years ago) have been living since middle of the war but had no idea it had ended. The aeroplane has two stowaways and a menagerie of animals.

Baby Boom - with Diane Keaton, a top of her game tycoon who is left a baby in a distant relatives will. Hilarious.

rosegoldwatcher · 06/03/2021 17:14

@SinkGirl - Mr. Nobody - Brilliant, smart film, sadly never spoken to anyone who has seen it

I saw it, quite by chance, on TV about 5 years ago and loved it.
I told my sister about it and bought the DVD for her but she said she just didn't get it.

I love a film that makes you think...

AmazingCoffee · 06/03/2021 17:17

Raising Arizona!

Coen brothers with a dim-witted ex con Nick Cage and Holly Hunter as his wife/arresting cop.

Brilliant soundtrack.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/03/2021 17:20

Morvern Callar - Samantha Morton, Lynne Ramsey film, sort of bleak but loved it.
The Amazing Mr Blunden - a blast from my childhood past.
I’m going to check out some of these this weekend Smile

supercritter · 06/03/2021 17:21

Raising Arizona is on Sony movies tomorrow
