Where to live on 3m

First world question: where would you live in london on a 3m budget. Low income otherwise (!), kids in state primary, we like diversity, zones 1/2, parks, ease of travel (ideally bike but if not then public transport)

OP posts:

@LBXXX

I’ve never looked at 3m properties before but this post got me curious what I could get for 3m in my area www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/78354123#/

I can’t lie OP I wish I had your problems 😂😂

Has the estate agent deliberately asked the photographer to photoshop all those pictures with a Schindler’s List look, or is that the owners interior design aesthetic?
PerspicaciousGreen · 04/03/2021 15:20

@GappyValley : Goodness me, loads of other places in the UK have those! For example, we recently seriously considered moving to York. Fabulous quality of life up there, don't have to spend £3m or your whole life on the Tube for it. It's not London or the middle of nowhere!

I only read the first page, but it occurred to me that 3m could be the house budget, and perhaps -additional- -stash- total assets were considerably more? (Regardless of 'low income').

DoubleTweenQueen · 04/03/2021 15:27

Ah my strike through skills need updating

PerspicaciousGreen · 04/03/2021 15:28

@GappyValley Lol, well if you literally want the actual Natural History Museum you'll be struggling... But for example, York has the National Railway Museum, the castle museum, the Viking Centre, the Yorkshire Museum, Fairfax House, there's an archeological one, a chocolate one...

And that's all just in the centre of York proper. Plus umpteen National Trust type places a short drive away. Some are free, some aren't, but that's the same as in London. Point is, London is not the epicentre of culture in the UK. Believe me, I grew up in London! I know what it has to offer. But it's actually not the magical fairytale city that some people like to think it is. It's just a regular ol' UK city, like all the others.

That is so hideous! Who has 3 million living and wants to live in that?!
BarbaraofSeville · 04/03/2021 15:31

Well within an hour of Leeds, you do have the National Railway Museum, Royal Armouries, National Mining Museum, National Science and Media Museum, Imperial War Museum North, all free national museums plus the Barbara Hepworth Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, countless other smaller museums and galleries and several more free national museums in Liverpool within easy reach for a day out.

Obviously not on the same scale as the central London museums, but certainly plenty of good cultural stuff on your doorstep along with other amenities that add up to a good quality of life for those who aren't in the fortunate position that the OP is in with the budget for a family home in central London.

GoodQueenAlysanne · 04/03/2021 15:31

"Just as pure tangent@GoodQueenAlysannewhat would the reception be like be for Londoners moving to (small town or rural) NI? Would it be tricky?"

I think the biggest culture shock for that property, would be being living in the country in general, instead of "town" life, as opposed to any bother with neighbours etc.

Something like this closer to the city centre (a 15 minute drive) might be better for a townie.

English people are normally accepted and settle okay (in the more affluent areas at least, working class areas can be different, and religion etc will be a much bigger deal).

*Be being living in

VinterKvinna · 04/03/2021 15:38
@LightTripper thank you so much! I'm definitely adding it to my search. I don't know anyone who lives there but it always looks lovely passing through. Did go to the Christmas thing this year. The ONLY christmas thing we did.
Are you ever going to answer the 'why is your money like this?' 'Why spend 3m on a house when your income is 35k, and want to spend time with your dc?'

So many questions...

DoubleTweenQueen · 04/03/2021 15:39

If the OP has come into max 3m, with income so low, it would be foolish to spend all of in on a house. Buy a nice home by all means, but diversify some investments for a rainy day/the future. London values may adjust unfavourably.

Blimey at this!
TatianaBis · 04/03/2021 15:44

OP wants to continue living in London. Museums near Leeds are irrelevant!

Smallgoon · 04/03/2021 15:47

Marylebone would be nice. Regent's Park on your doorstep, a great high-street, and a relatively sleepy part of town at the weekends!

Laquila · 04/03/2021 15:50

That place in Solihull that @LBXXX posted is...a lot. I've never seen a house quite so wedded to one (horrible) colour scheme. And why are all the sofas so tiny relative to the size of the rooms?!

BarbaraofSeville · 04/03/2021 15:51

It was a comment to the posters who think you need to live in London to have access to free museums, parks etc.

It always goes the same way in threads like this. Posters list a whole list of amenities that are generally available in any large city, with the clear insinuation that they consider only the London version of said amenity good enough for them.

It's fair enough living in London if you have the budget to do so, but there's also an awful lot of people significantly compromising on their living space and commuting time because of some misguided notion that London is the only place they could possibly live.

GoodQueenAlysanne · 04/03/2021 15:53

There are some gorgeous properties here, but I know nothing about London/boroughs etc. I love property porn lol, you're very lucky op.

roses2 · 04/03/2021 15:54

Buy one nice house for £2m in zone 2 near a tube line with a garden to live in. Buy a second to rent out and can be your childs inheritance.

BigPaperBag · 04/03/2021 15:58

@LondonStone

Very strange question but if I had £3m and wanted to stay in London, 100% Islington. I used to live close to this house and Canonbury is a beautiful area and it ticks pretty much all of your boxes.

There’s also a gorgeous house for sale on Cross Street for just under £3m. I’ve been in lots of houses around this area (home visits for a local primary school) and some of the houses are absolutely magnificent.

I can’t get over the fact that it’s 2.8m for a semi. I think I’m about to faint!
Vinosaurus · 04/03/2021 15:59

I think you are absolutely mad to spend 3m on a house with a 35k budget and could do with seeing a financial advisor.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/03/2021 16:06

That £2.8M semi is not just any semi though is it? It's a very impressive property.

I'll just leave this here for the property porn fans.

Not for the OP obviously, but a gorgeous property in a rural setting but about half an hour outside Leeds. If I had a spare £950k, or even not quite that much once I'd scraped up my existing equity and looked down the back of the sofa, it would definitely be on the list.

Goodness. I wouldn’t pay £300k for that bland grey box, let alone offers over £3m. Do you think they added an extra 0 on in error.
