I mean most people know about things like peanut allergies but what else do you know is an allergen?

Someone I know (on here btw so hi if she sees this) her ds is allergic to tomatoes

I’ve never heard of a tomato allergy before so that was interesting

Caterpillar s give off poison so predators .dont eat them or little girls play with them Grin

MixedUpFiles · 02/03/2021 14:57

My Allergies
Tomatoes
Cinnamon
Fragrance mix I
Benzoic acid
Balsam of Peru
Latex

Oat intolerant

The cinnamon and fragrance allergies are airborne as well as contact and oral so my house is my safe bubble and every time I venture out I keep my epi-pens close and hope for the best. The world is not kind to people with allergies outside of the main 7, not that it is especially great for those to begin with.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/03/2021 15:05

I’ve never believed that thing about no allergies in the past. Nor the one about people not having pets makes them more susceptible to animal allergies.

I’m 57, strawberry allergy appeared 53 years ago. We also had a dog and a rabbit when l was little and I’m severely allergic to animals

One of my dog is allergic to other dogs Confused we think its the dander on dogs that shed a lot (all dogs we have are -doodle)
We have to be really careful when we leave him with a dog sitter because even a trace of a hairy dog brings him out in hives. He's also allergic to certain grass and sand Hmm

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 02/03/2021 15:17

There is a type of caterpillar that's been spreading in my part of the US which it seems nearly everyone is allergic to. It's called the Browntail Moth Caterpillar.

Luckily we had very few in our garden, so we could go out in it the last few summers, but many friends have been totally unable to use their gardens. Lots of people ended up in hospital with breathing difficulties and horrendous rashes.

Cocolapew · 02/03/2021 15:19

The sun, I have Lupus and get a rash if I go into the sun.
Fresh pineapple makes inside my mouth and throat itchy.
I think I was allergic to my ex's sperm Blush the first time we had sex without a condom I was in agony, we went back to condoms.
Tomato soup makes under my chin itch.

HazelBite · 02/03/2021 15:30

I cannot drink tap water, I get a terrible rash and sores in the mouth, its a real pain as you have to take a bottle of water everywhere you go and you just can't pop somewhere for a coffee.

AgentCooperDreamsofTibet · 02/03/2021 15:40

I've remembered another one. I grew up with dogs, most people I've know at every stage of my life have had dogs and I even volunteered in a dog shelter for a while. No problems whatsoever. As soon as I encountered FiL's dog, however, I would start sneezing and wheezing like crazy, eyes streaming, nose running etc. FiL took this very personally. His dog was his pride and joy and enjoyed a higher status than most family members. He refused to entertain the notion that his dog alone gave me this reaction. It really was a lovely dog too - not the dog's fault, not anyone's fault. He's dead now (the dog, not FiL) and FiL has another dog which gives me no trouble. I wish I knew what it was about that particular animal which gave me so much trouble. Also should mention that my sister and a family member on my side both have dogs of the same breed and I can be around them with no issues, so definitely that individual animal and not a breed-thing.

I was also a premature baby in the 70s so I'm really interested in the link with allergies - was unaware of this until this thread.

PatchworkElmer · 02/03/2021 15:46

I’m allergic to peanuts, walnuts, and hazelnuts. Also most animals with fur- horses being the absolute worst, ended up in A&E after my one and only horse riding lesson as a child.

Pork-cat syndrome!

waltzingparrot · 02/03/2021 15:52

@PattyPan

I’m allergic to mosquito bites - I didn’t know it was an actual allergy until last year because I’ve never heard of anyone else with it. It’s not an anaphylactic allergy but I’ll get a huge angry swollen area (eg if I get bitten on the foot, my whole foot will swell).
You're not alone!
Murtaghjames · 02/03/2021 15:52

My DD is allergic to all animal dander and pineapples!

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 02/03/2021 16:01

I’m allergic to honey. When I mention it for example to ask if it’s an ingredient, people often declare that they think it’s a really strange one until I ask if they’ve heard of people being allergic to bee stings... then they make the connection.
I assume that I would have a bad reaction were I ever to be stung by a bee.

monkeywrench · 02/03/2021 16:08

I think I am allergic to turmeric, I haven't had it officially confirmed though. At least it is quite easy to spot if it is in something because of the colour, but as it's now super trendy it's in loads of stuff.

ILoveFlumps · 02/03/2021 16:10

Probably outing, but I'm allergic to Febreeze (clearly a chemical in it - but not discovered which one). Both the spray versions and the fabric conditioner which contains Febreeze Confused

TheLostDiadem · 02/03/2021 16:11

A woman I used to work with claimed to be allergic to the smell of oranges and the smell of Pot Noodle. She was adamant that if she smelt these things she would go into anaphylactic shock. Occasionally we’d have temps in who weren’t informed and as soon as she got a whiff she’d start dry retching and immediately have to go home for the rest of the day. None of us were actually brave enough to ask if she was making it up but she obviously was simply because she didn’t like the smell.

Liquorishtoffee · 02/03/2021 16:12

Green Bell peppers (just green ones)

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/03/2021 16:12

WaltzingParrot. Fucking mozzies🦟🦟

If l get one bite, the whole area with a radius of about 7cm goes red and swells up. Sometimes they all link together and I’m just a red itching mess. Anti histamines make no bloody difference.

Both Dh and a good friend are the same. I look like l have some sort of weird disease consisting of loads of bright red perfect circles😭

homesickinscotland · 02/03/2021 16:16

Oral allergy syndrome here too - so that's raw cherries, apples, peaches, plums, kiwis, hazelnuts, celery etc. Can make getting a healthy diet really tricky.

FatCatThinCat · 02/03/2021 16:30

I'm like anti-allergic to mozzies. I can sit around of an evening, surrounded by a swarm of the buggers and be completely bite free, while everyone else is eaten alive. They really don't like me.

TheTempest · 02/03/2021 16:38

@ JosephineDeBeauharnais I’m allergic to Honey and Bee Stings as well! How strange, I’ve never met anyone else with the same allergy as me!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 02/03/2021 16:38

@BoKatan

Artichoke
Hard to avoid that one. 🤣 My mum was allergic to plastic band aids and I know a kid who is allergic to glue sticks and sellotape, so they are banned from their ks bubble.
LemonCrab · 02/03/2021 16:39

One of mine isn't allowed kiwi in their lunchbox due to an allergy in class. Not heard that one before.

Twinkie01 · 02/03/2021 16:43

Kiwi, latex, bananas, plasters for me.

DD is allergic to artificial sweetener and artificial flavours and DS is allergic, life threateningly so, to pollen.

DH is allergic to nothing. Bastard.

chocolateisavegetable · 02/03/2021 16:47

Family member has aquagenic urticaria - basically an allergy to water (not just tap water like Hazel - but it's "only" an allergy to water on the skin, so is able to drink water).
