What unusual allergies have you heard of?

I mean most people know about things like peanut allergies but what else do you know is an allergen?

Someone I know (on here btw so hi if she sees this) her ds is allergic to tomatoes

I’ve never heard of a tomato allergy before so that was interesting

*towards not today

Oldraver · 02/03/2021 09:53

When DS was diagnosed with CMPI we were given some literature and tomatoes and the fruits in the same group given as common allergens

I can eat them but have to make sure they don't touch my skin

Yumyumdindins · 02/03/2021 09:53

Avocado, egg yokes (can eat cake/baked goods with eggs in but can’t eat whole eggs in any other form even if well cooked), almonds but I can eat all other forms of nuts. I get hives and wheezy from animals with rough fur, so guinea pigs, horses, dogs like terriers etc. Dogs like spaniels with silky fur are fine though. Quite an odd array of allergies when you think about it actually!

Oh I'd forgotten, both DS's had a reaction to Marmite

ShowOfHands · 02/03/2021 09:55

I'm allergic to dull, overcast days. Seriously! If I go for a walk, or do any mild exercise when it's around 10 degrees and cloudy, I come out in terrible hives. It's happening right now. My thighs are agony and covered in welts. I have no clue what is actually going on but it is some kind of temperature related urticaria and I've always had it. Teen DD has exactly the same issue. It's wherever my clothes brush my skin.

My FIL has never had an allergy in his life and aged 55 developed full on anaphylaxis to all shellfish. It had been his favourite food for 50 years and he went from no issue whatsoever to a life threatening reaction overnight.

Jackitty · 02/03/2021 09:55

DM is allergic to caterpillars.

My best mate is allergic to diet coke - her tongue swells up - and nail glue - her nails go bright red, split and the skin starts to fall off Shock

Weirdest one is best mates boyfriend is allergic to raw carrots, but not cooked ones!!!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/03/2021 09:55

DH is allergic/intolerant to some beers (usually lager ones, but not ales). He goes red and blotchy.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/03/2021 09:55

I’m allergic to all animals and birds, strawberries, kiwis, pollen, dust, and Christmas trees. It’s a pita.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/03/2021 09:55

I know of a lad who is allergic to lentils. I'd never come across that one, and I see a lot of allergies in my line of work

Waveifyouknowme · 02/03/2021 09:56

I'm a asthmatic that can't have salbutomol as it makes it worse. Had lots of problems as a child as doctors would not accept what my mum was telling them and would give me a nebuliser which made it worse.

Mamamamasaurus · 02/03/2021 09:58

Straw, but not hay. I get hives, asthma kicks off, sneezing, runny eyes etc. It isn't severe and I'd forgotten about it. I was recently reminded recently when I accidentally bought straw instead of hat for my chickens bedding

QueenPaw · 02/03/2021 10:00

I'm allergic to heat

BikeRunSki · 02/03/2021 10:03

Himalayan Balsam turns me into a sneezy, snotty mess before I can even see it.

I'm allergic to heat

Sun heat or all heat ?

BiggerBoat1 · 02/03/2021 10:09

I once had a child on a school trip and on his risk assessment it said he was allergic to Brie Struck me as a very middle class allergy! Luckily we weren't in France.

QueenPaw · 02/03/2021 10:11

@Mrsjayy basically internal body temp rising. So stress, exercise, hot baths etc. It's going from cold to hot that's worse, if I'm already warm in summer and get hotter it's not as bad as trying to exercise in winter

MargaretThursday · 02/03/2021 10:12

I thought tomatoes were quite a common allergy.
I've known 2 or 3.

Unusual ones I've come across are chlorophyll-the stuff that makes leaves green. They could sit on grass but not mow it. I had strong suspicions that one was a bit "convenient".
Other one is water. Yes, that sounds unbelievable but it's from someone who is so far from a drama queen that I think it must be true. They can take a certain amount, but have to be careful. Again they're quietly careful so not making a fuss. I have to admit to being very sceptical on that one when it first came up.

DragonPoop · 02/03/2021 10:12

Dh is allergic to cranberries, goes into full on anaphylactic shock if he eats any.

LadyL0velyLocks · 02/03/2021 10:14

I once worked with a girl who was allergic to anything red coloured - strawberries, tomatoes and artificially coloured foods too. I still remember 15 years later as it was so unusual.

PattyPan · 02/03/2021 10:14

I’m allergic to mosquito bites - I didn’t know it was an actual allergy until last year because I’ve never heard of anyone else with it. It’s not an anaphylactic allergy but I’ll get a huge angry swollen area (eg if I get bitten on the foot, my whole foot will swell).

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/03/2021 10:14

I think heat allergy is allergy to your own sweat. My dd gets this.

ShakeaHettyFeather · 02/03/2021 10:14

A friend is allergic to lavender, which lots of massage places and beauticians think is impossible and use in their 'non-allergic' oils and sprays.

My mum is allergic to horses, which was more of a problem when more drugs were made using horse urine - she couldn't take HRT until the bacterial-grown stuff became available, and they thought she was allergic to penicillin for 25 years - she's not, just to the test to see if you're allergic to it...

StormcloakNord · 02/03/2021 10:15

I (think) I must be allergic to something in the glue in envelopes.

Pre covid if I ever licked an envelope to seal it my throat immediately started scratching and felt really raw and sore and I'd constantly feel the need to clear my throat.

QueenPaw · 02/03/2021 10:16

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow it's heat for me but yes sweat is another one! I've had it 24 years and now trialling a biologic drug

Mrsjayy · 02/03/2021 10:16

That sounds a complete pain in the rear. One of my dc breaks out in hives after a shower I wonder if it is the same thing.
