I mean most people know about things like peanut allergies but what else do you know is an allergen?

Someone I know (on here btw so hi if she sees this) her ds is allergic to tomatoes

I’ve never heard of a tomato allergy before so that was interesting

I was a premature baby. (31 weeks in late 70s)
I have allergies to:

Kiwi.
Pineapple.
Nuts.
Horses (horrendously, epi pen)
Wasps
Prawns
Crab meat
Penecillin (but this is due to over exposure at work)

Allergy clinic link allergy status to prematurity allegedly.

Technically I’m allergic to random things like car freshener and toothpaste❓❓

I have a skin contact allergy to limonene, which is a fragrance ingredient and really common. It’s literally in hundreds of products we interact with everyday, I’m always finding a new benign product that could be problematic🤯

so so weird, luckily I was just diagnosed after a one-off incident, I can still use scented products without issue. Life would be very difficult if my allergy was severe!

Soubriquet · 02/03/2021 12:13

Reading all this makes me wonder if I have an allergy to some perfumes

I thought it was just hay fever but no, I get really watery eyes, itchy nose and a pounding headache even if I take antihistamine

This is absolutely true ..I knew a guy who was allergic to closing time...when the last orders bell went he'd start sneezing and coughing until he left the pub ..was very funny to watch ..I didnt believe it when I was told but saw it many times ..so not a classic allergy more a Pavlovian reaction..though to what I'm not sure ..😬

QuimReaper · 02/03/2021 12:20

My friend swears her father is allergic to duck Confused

TenCornMaidens · 02/03/2021 12:25

Oh, and one of my aunts is allergic to aubergine and the other is allergic to lychees.

minniemoocher · 02/03/2021 12:29

Friends dd is allergic to smarties (and m&ms) it's the shell

minniemoocher · 02/03/2021 12:32

@QueenPaw

I'm allergic to the sun, have to take antihistamines and west factor 50, my dd is the same. In extreme cases they cannot be exposed at all but thankfully we can manage thanks to modern sun block

NeedanIdea · 02/03/2021 12:40

I know someone who's allergic to Rapeseed oil.

It's a growing thing apparently, so many things she can't eat, and it's in the Covid vaccines too as a preservative, which isn't great.

grafittiartist · 02/03/2021 12:41

I'm allergic to extreme temp too- cold to hot is bad.

Me too. I actually come out in hives on very sunny days. So I live like a vampire.

the80sweregreat · 02/03/2021 13:01

I don't like hot weather and get a rash. Sun cream helps. I stay indoors when it's really boiling hot! Another vampire here!

Same as my Ds, he was 28 weeks.

I'm allergic to latex. I blew a balloon up that was meant to be latex free for DDs Birthday party years back, had a mouth that looked like a glamour model

the80sweregreat · 02/03/2021 13:22

An old colleague of mine had an allergy to certain brands of condoms. She had to order special non latex ones ( pre Internet days too!)

Babdoc · 02/03/2021 13:29

flakymate, heavens, no! It was forty years ago, when consultants were still God. Especially in small provincial hospitals.
I’m not sure what they would have needed to do in order to attract disciplinary attention- I suspect as Michael Caine remarked with regard to academics in Educating Rita, it would have to be something pretty gross such as “bugger the bursar” !

Countrysidebloos · 02/03/2021 13:33

I'm allergic to beans - all mature beans, so runner beans and fine beans are ok, but broad beans are not. I'm fine with other legumes though.

I know a few people allergic to oranges and any orange citrus fruit (but lemons and pink grapefruits are fine). And a couple allergic to all alcohol. I know people allergic to strawberries and on allergic to birch trees.

Hm2020 · 02/03/2021 13:34

Whenever I’ve had an operation I’m asked if I’m allergic to kiwis apparently an allergy to kiwis usually means your allergic to latex always found that strange

mindutopia · 02/03/2021 13:50

I am allergic to the adhesive in plasters (and other things), which isn't all that unusual actually, but I thought it was odd when I first heard about it (after I broke out in massive hives due to surgical tape).

I had a student (I'm a uni lecturer and was organising an overseas study programme at the time) who was allergic to mushrooms 'but only the raw ones in salads'. Basically, she didn't like raw mushrooms in salad. I don't think it was actually an 'allergy'. I had another student on the trip who was supposedly allergic to avocados.

jebthesheep · 02/03/2021 14:01

DS. Allergic to over 30 ( proper full on allergy as in breathing difficulties, collapse etc ) Runner beans is the most unusual I think -things like cochineal, pineapple, latex are also included in the list - and yes with a list that long and varied an assumption of parental neurosis is usually made - you cant make everyone go through all the NHS test result letters every time you are asked so the smug “did I roll my eye’s out loud?” set are always available for an opinion based on a post they read somewhere
Worst question - what are they allergic to ? For many people with severe multiple allergies is more a case of what is safe right now ? , Can I still breathe if xxx is being cooked here? and At this time of year is it ok to spend time outside ?
People can have an anaphylactic reaction to cold which is the strangest I’ve heard of. But antihistamine is pretty unfortunate for those affected too - it’s our best friend.

lightand · 02/03/2021 14:04

latex, cows, either millet seed or poppy seed[the person hasnt worked out which yet, and doesnt want either again to try and find out which one it was!]

endlesswicker · 02/03/2021 14:06

If I eat fresh pineapple I get weird blisters on my lips, but tinned pineapple is ok. I can eat strawberries, but picking them gives me itchy spots on my hands from the leaves.

Handling hyacinth bulbs gives me a rash and so does picking up guinea pigs!

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 02/03/2021 14:27

Some waxed dental flosses make my gums itch uncontrollably. I’ve found one that doesn’t so I use that.

I had a bunch of other allergies, but allergy shots have helped a fair bit. I still get nervous when I eat an apple or pear though, and I’ve been too nervous to try raw almonds.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 02/03/2021 14:29

I know people often say no one used to have allergies but my grandma could never eat onions, and I remember a couple of kids at school who had constant eczema but didn’t know why. My husband is in his 50s and has had allergies since he was a small child, and was fairly regularly hospitalised with them.

mawbroon · 02/03/2021 14:44

Also mentioned by a previous poster about her mum...
I had my worst ever allergic reaction after playing with a hairy caterpillar when I was a kid
