I mean most people know about things like peanut allergies but what else do you know is an allergen?

Someone I know (on here btw so hi if she sees this) her ds is allergic to tomatoes

I’ve never heard of a tomato allergy before so that was interesting

My dad was very allergic to sunflower oil. Looked like his face had been burned within minutes of eating anything containing it. Made shopping fun, as they seem to put it in bloody everything!

I can’t let fresh pineapple touch my lips, else they go bright red and painful. I’m fine chewing it, and fine with tinned or cooked, but raw, fresh pineapple doesn’t like me at all. I’m also violently allergic to wasp stings, cats and guinea pigs!

grassisjeweled · 02/03/2021 16:50

They could sit on grass but not mow it. I had strong suspicions that one was a bit "convenient".

I'm allergic to liquorice - I come out in a rash and I'm physically sick.

I've scanned the thread and can't see if anyone else has mentioned it so I think pretty unusual?!

Midget gens make for fun eating because sometime with generic/unbranded ones it's hard to tell if the black ones or safe or not Grin

I know someone allergic to moles -very obscure!Grin

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 02/03/2021 17:37

I'm allergic to morphine. It was fun finding that out.

dotdashdashdash · 02/03/2021 18:22

I'm allergic to morphine.

Me too! Thankfully it wasn't anaphylaxis.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 02/03/2021 18:29

@TheTempest

@ JosephineDeBeauharnais I’m allergic to Honey and Bee Stings as well! How strange, I’ve never met anyone else with the same allergy as me!
I’m not anaphylactic to honey, but I don’t know what would happen if I got stung. It’s slightly worrying in summer.

I knew a florist who had to give up because she developed an allergy to chrysanthemums.

I've heard of tomato allergy. And strawberry.

DS has a banana intolerance. Not exactly an allergy but he gets terrible mouth ulcers the minute he eats them.

SciFiScream · 02/03/2021 18:33

I'm allergic to fish and shellfish. I used to love salmon, tuna, cod and mussels. Now I can't eat them at all.

I miss Worcestershire sauce too.

I have a slight chrysanthemum allergy, I'd completely forgotten about that. My Mum was a florist and I used to work for her part-time as a teenager. Chrysanths used to make my fingers a little itchy, really not too bad, but if I didn't wash my hands really thoroughly after handling them and touched my face or lips there would be huge swelling within a minute.
londongirl12 · 02/03/2021 18:56

Someone at work is allergic to citrus fruits. We're allowed to bring it into work if it's already been peeled, but can't peel it in the office Confused

KatharinaRosalie · 02/03/2021 19:00

Not an allergy, but I have dermographism. Found this out when I was having allergy testing as they were suspecting anaphylactic allergy to shellfish. Every single skin prick test swelled up - the nurse looked quite alarmed before she noticed that also the negative control had come up.

Oh also if you've ever had an allergic reaction out of the blue to fish or shellfish, look up scombroid fish poisoning. That's what I had. Not allergy.

sanityisamyth · 02/03/2021 19:05

@HaveANiceFuckingDay

My grandson is allergic to tomatoes , straight away comes up in a rash on his face and starts coughing , he is undiagnosed asthma as he is only 3 and won’t diagnose until he’s 5. The 2 are linked it seems

Also allergic to tomatoes. It's more digestive issues that I suffer from (major stomach cramps and D&V) but I don't know many other people that suffer! It's very annoying!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 02/03/2021 19:07

My cousin's husband is allergic to all foods from the nightshade family - so that includes tomatoes and potatoes.

What is interesting about him is that he was diagnosed in the 1970s at Basingstoke Hospital, which is just a run of the mill local hospital which happened to have a pioneering food allergy consultant in situ there. They lived in Basingstoke and he got the consults and analysis. Very lucky for him because it could have gone on for years.

MrsIronfoundersson · 02/03/2021 19:08

@BillywigSting

I've heard of tomato allergy.

I'm essentially allergic to the sun (well, a substance my skin produces in reaction to uv light). It's called pmle and is intensely itchy but not serious.

I would never have believed such a ridiculous condition existed if I didn't have it myself

DH and DD get PMLE but only on foreign holidays in stronger sun than the UK. Anti histamine before and during the holiday usually controls it, and Piz Buin suntan lotion.
whataballbag · 02/03/2021 19:09

I'm allergic (possibly outing but whatever) to party poppers. Something in them god knows what but they make my face sweet up.

Also allergic to plasters and wasp stings (large localised reactions).

My dads never struggled with any allergies until around 10 years ago he randomly had an anaphylactic reaction to penicillin. Dread to think what would have happened had he taken it before bed/home alone it happened that fast. I never take the first tablet of a new course of meds at night anymore just incase

DogsAreShit · 02/03/2021 19:10

@Tiktokersmiracle it's quite common to be able to tolerate cooked egg but not raw. Whatever the allergen is in eggs is more potent in raw eggs.

Of the childhood allergies, it's one of the ones that people are most likely to outgrow, fortunately.

Ds1 used to be allergic to a whole bunch of food including eggs and milk and, as previously mentioned by pps, avocados and peppers.

Now he's moved on to being allergic to airborne things and animals, so moulds, pollens etc.

Interesting that prematurity has been mentioned as he was prem and I've often wondered if it's linked.

Ludo19 · 02/03/2021 19:12

I'm severely allergic to garlic but only just in the last 6/7 years

canigooutyet · 02/03/2021 19:12

Fish poisoning is one of the worst food poisonings I've ever had the displeasure of having. Absolute horrific. Had it twice once as a child from the chippy, and as an adult at a party. Second time put me off fish for life after I was hospitalised.

SimonJT · 02/03/2021 19:14

I have a severe kiwi allergy, I am also midly allergic to other things in the same family, so latex for example causes a rash and swelling.

Lindy2 · 02/03/2021 19:18

Dried dates. DH suddenly developed this allergy last April. He found some leftover Christmas dates and then 10 minutes after eating them started swelling up like a marshmallow man.

I had to drive him to A&E and leave him at the door (due to Covid) hoping he'd actually make it inside ok. Apparently the staff took one look at him and rushed him straight through for treatment.

canigooutyet · 02/03/2021 19:33

One of my dc's has a penicillin allergy, I don't.
A couple of cousins also have a lactose intolerance.
Other than that, I'm the only one with allergies and intolerances. My brother was prem, and I was late.

I selected to share my health stuff within the NHS, which helps a lot when asked do you have any allergies lol, they can either search my nhs number or I log into the nhs app.
In the past I've had hospitals and various clinics call my gp to confirm I'm not exaggerating.

Also know those with a citrus allergy which also includes things like tomatoes as well as oranges, some berries and more.

Kiwi is an interesting one. I should be allergic as I also have latex and banana allergy which usually "go" together, but I can eat them and apples without problems. Oh and cannot eat avocado which pops up with kiwi allergies.

playthegame · 02/03/2021 19:40

A friend of mine is allergic to some types of alcohol. She can't drink wine/beer/cider but distilled spirits are fine.
We just stick to the gin 😊

fallfallfall · 02/03/2021 19:41

my youngest is allergic to alcohol (diagnosed with an upper gi and biopsy). also allergic to acetaminophen (most dr's don't believe this one, all anti inflammatory drugs give him a systemic reaction called steven johnson syndrom, also poorly known).
my oldest is allergic to algae, and only certain algae. so some fish are fine others not based on what the fish ate.

playthegame · 02/03/2021 19:44

I know I am allergic to something, just not sure what.
I'm in a job where I have to visit people at home. Most houses are fine, but in some my nose and eyes start streaming and I get horrendous coughing fits 😞
