Things you do that your Mother doesn't approve of/thinks are unladylike

Lighthearted!

My mother thinks it's terrible that I drink beer. Ladies don't drink beer. I'm 52 and she still pouts when she knows I've had some!

Any other unladylike ladies on here?

Not drinking tea. Completely uncivilised!

Chunkymenrock · 01/03/2021 21:52

Being overweight. Sad

nestlestealswater · 01/03/2021 21:52

I don't shave my legs. I just can't be bothered. Every time she notices she mentions it in hurried, hushed tones as if I've simply forgotten and will rush off to sort them out.

Joeblack066 · 01/03/2021 21:55

My mother always wore gloves- she’d be horrified that I don’t!

MsHedgehog · 01/03/2021 21:55

Hand gestures when I talk, or talking too loudly!

Polly2020 · 01/03/2021 21:56

My mum can't get over that I encourage DC who are 14 and 16 to clean up and do the odd load of laundry as they are still 'children' me and mum where both parents by the age of 16 so obviously had to actually do the above and look after a human😂

MIL thought it was disgusting that I choose to attend university when I had dc as I should stop being selfish and stay at home....... We now have a lovely lifestyle and dc understand the importance of hard work!!

porridgeface · 01/03/2021 21:58

Breast feeding in public.
Wearing a hoody.
Not making gravy in a pan

cateycloggs · 01/03/2021 22:03
**@ivfbabymomma1* Doc martens.... she called them bother boots?! (I don't get it)*

It's bovver boots, as worn by bovver boys. Trouble makers basically.
If your mother grew up in the 70s, she may have known them as part of the 'uniform' of skinheads. They wore well polished Doc Martens, ankle length jeans with huge turn ups, worn with braces over a t shirt and a shaved head hence the name. Their main pastime was beating the crap out of anyone not in their gang and football hooliganism. Girls also wore much the same with longer hair and a crombie coat. Best to keep out of their way.

My Mum who I love very much disapproves of takeaways, flat shoes, eating off a tray, having a cleaner, allowing ds (26) to have a girlfriend stop over, make up free faces, dark nail polish and alcohol other than sherry.

draughtycatflap · 01/03/2021 22:04

Playing the guitar.

AnneElliott · 01/03/2021 22:06

Ooh there so many - where to start?
Eating in the street
Not wearing tights with all dresses/skirts
Wearing trousers to weddings
Swearing

SackofTurtles · 01/03/2021 22:06

@nocoolnamesleft

My mum's a feminist. She never expected me to be a lady. I love my mum.
Go you, @nocoolnamesleft’s mum. Alas, the most unladylike thing I do from my mother’s POV is correcting men or challenging men’s opinions, not being sufficiently self-deprecating around men, and behaving as though my job is as important as DH’s.

I once thought she was going to die of shame when we were out for dinner and I asked for the winelist and ordered the wine, despite there being a man at the table.

AnneElliott · 01/03/2021 22:07

Also
Wearing of ankle bracelets
Sitting outside in my front garden

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/03/2021 22:07

@draughtycatflap

Playing the guitar.
:o Thats very specific! Why?!
nestlestealswater · 01/03/2021 22:08

Oh I've thought of some more!

Wearing fitted clothing when I'm fatter, and wearing loose clothing when I'm thinner
Being a stay at home parent (such a waste of my degree)
Long hair after 30
Breastfeeding (she was so pleased when I stopped)

DarcyJack · 01/03/2021 22:08

Five year old dbro accidentally got a skinhead hair cut. All the other kids were making fun of him. DDad told him to tell them 'Shut up or I'll kick you with my bovver boots' Unfortunately his reception teacher made a smart remark about his hair and got the same response. Fortunately she had a sense of humour .

Confusedandshaken · 01/03/2021 22:09

Drinking too much. Having botox. Having a very wide circle of friends and enjoying time away/partying with them. Not sending birthday cards and Christmas cards to distant relations. Not working. Having a cleaner. Volunteering. Being on the donor register. Giving to charity. Voting Labour. Watching prime time shows like Ant and Dec or Strictly. It all used to bother me but I turn 60 this year and I no longer give a shit.

She doesn't like me swearing either.

She doesn't like swearing

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/03/2021 22:10

oh re fitted clothing.....

Wearing anything that didnt attempt to disguise pregnancy was a no no. Certainly with my two eldest kids. Her reasoning "Well, people will know" :o

By the time I had my youngest (now 9) I lived in my Isabella Oliver wraparound tops and she said how nice they looked.

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/03/2021 22:11

Should say eldest kids are 30 and 23 so almost a generation older than their sister!

moggiek · 01/03/2021 22:11

My lovely, lovely Mum didn’t make a single negative comment about me in the 51 years we were together. A very special woman.

Mrsrightagain · 01/03/2021 22:13

Fart

Trumpetpants · 01/03/2021 22:13

Oh dear, so many.. Not digging a hole in the back garden to burn used sanitary products, swearing, being overweight

draughtycatflap · 01/03/2021 22:14

@PyongyangKipperbang I don’t know I was too incredulous to ask. It’s unladylike, you can’t wear sequinned arm length gloves, it might cause infertility... could be any number of batshit reasons from her insane fantasy world of laydee logic! 😬

DaphneduM · 01/03/2021 22:16

Going to nightclubs - 'you'll never meet a decent husband there - why don't you join the Young Conservatives?' !!!!!!!!

Restawhile · 01/03/2021 22:18

Not wearing makeup , particularly when going out in public. Putting on weight, I’ve got that off now. Eating cakes or pudding whilst overweight. Wearing flat shoes, trainers or chunky flat boots.

That will do for the moment.

I do all these things with relish!
