Things you do that your Mother doesn't approve of/thinks are unladylike

Lighthearted!

My mother thinks it's terrible that I drink beer. Ladies don't drink beer. I'm 52 and she still pouts when she knows I've had some!

Any other unladylike ladies on here?

@ivfbabymomma1

Doc martens.... she called them bother boots?! (I don't get it)
Bovver Boots!! Thats what my father used to call them too! I think its to do with the skin heads back in the 70's, especially the more violent racists groups.

They both like my Bovver Boots now :o

LadyDanburysCane · 01/03/2021 21:20

My mother is long gone but...going to the pub, bare legs (a LADY always wears hose) and shaving legs unnecessary and unladylike as a result. She’d probably be horrified that I shave and/or wax everywhere and then take my bare legs to the pub.

PurpleDaisy2114 · 01/03/2021 21:21

Breastfeeding- really?!!
Most of these I can relate to however

Inanun2 · 01/03/2021 21:23

Swear. I never ever heard her swear neither does my Father, I still would not swear in front of him even now. (That includes any ‘bad’ words god, bloody etc which they considered swearing too)
Sadly lost my Mum when she was early 50s but I still measure myself against her.

@GenderApostate19

To be honest , visible bra straps are nasty, as is wearing any colour underwear other than flesh tone under a white top or trousers.
I'm really hoping you were being 'lighthearted' or sarcastic!
thefirstmrsrochester · 01/03/2021 21:27

Drinking alcohol.
Having my hair highlighted.
Working FT/returning to work after DC.
Driving/owning own car.
Insisting on joint mortgage and finances with DH.
Working in politics (no place for a woman apparently).
Wearing ‘fancy’ clothes (love myself too much Hmm)

hoodiemum · 01/03/2021 21:27

MiL was horrified that I allowed my DD to wear gender neutral clothing if she chose. Highly improper to be seen without a hint of pink.

StormyInTheNorth · 01/03/2021 21:27

She thinks I'm uncouth in general, but flash points include,
DMs - She cries when I wear them.
Tattoos- Ditto
My 20 odd piercings. She's not noticed my scaffolding but she'd cry at that too.
My Wildhearts tea towel - She wretched.
'Letting' DD wear trousers for school.
Smoking.
All my clothes.
Hair Dye - Any shade, salon or box. - She screams.

I'm almost 40!

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 01/03/2021 21:27

My mother is appalled that I take up space when I’m out and about in public. Particularly when I don’t get out of the way if a man is coming towards me. She’s started commenting on DD doing this too - she means it as a criticism, but I’m proud that my daughter is confident enough to take up space.

problematicbehaviour · 01/03/2021 21:30

Literally everything outside of having my son...

Having friends with benefits. Multiples. Often at the same time. DISGUSTING!
Working in hospitality.
Being too fat. Being too skinny.
Working with children, combined with above I am practically a sex worker...

Karmatime · 01/03/2021 21:30

Body part words - belly and bum are common, tummy and bottom are acceptable.
Sexual organs are not referred to at all.

Onlinedilema · 01/03/2021 21:30

Farting and belching. Also swearing of any kind. Eating outside.

Liverpool52 · 01/03/2021 21:37

Not wearing bright enough clothing - holding up a pink jumper and waving it in my face. I was wearing a light blue and yellow checked blouse at the time. But apparently that wasn't bright enough.

partyatthepalace · 01/03/2021 21:40
  • Having messy curly hair and not a sleek bob
  • Not caring that my bedroom / flat / house was messy
  • Using the word cunt Grin
Hohofortherobbers · 01/03/2021 21:42

Wearing black knickers, she thinks they are tarty!!

Bigtroubleinlittletrousers · 01/03/2021 21:43

Wearing jeans after the age of 40 is akin to selling your soul to the devil. Having hair longer than chin length at similar age is just beyond acceptable. Wearing a long skirt makes one look like a dirty hippie. I could go on ...

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 01/03/2021 21:43

I married someone with a Essex accent

Don't send my children to a religious school

The first flat we owned was an ex council one on an estate. She didn't visit 😂

CuteOrangeElephant · 01/03/2021 21:43

I was dragged into a socially distanced pub quiz organised by my mother's work.

She was aghast that some of her colleagues were drinking beer very early... At 9pm on a Friday evening...

BlueLikeASmurf · 01/03/2021 21:45

Swearing. My DM wasn't allowed to use even the most moderate of swear words when she grew up in the late 1940s and 1950s. Bloody, flipping, bugger, pillock etc. They were all considered utterly offensive. The B, F and C words weren't even in their vocabulary. I honestly don't think they had ever heard them. And if they did, their heads would probably have exploded.

I went to an all girls grammar school in the early 1980s. I learnt them all. I can swear like an absolute trooper and still do. I am very proud that I have since taught my 78 year old DM to swear. It doesn't come naturally but she can now say 'fuck'!

FrameByFrame · 01/03/2021 21:45

My mum tried to persuade me not to do a degree as it would turn me into a 'blue stocking' and I'd end up us a frumpy spinster.

ancientgran · 01/03/2021 21:46

@SarahAndQuack

Oh, the list!
  • drinking straight from a bottle. This is disgusting. Even, or perhaps especially, if it has a top designed to drink from.
  • having tampax visible in my loo.
  • skirts above the knee. She wouldn't say so, but she judges.
  • visible cleavage (she's had to give up on this one).
  • visible makeup.
  • eating a meal not sitting at the table
  • dipping biscuits in tea (I don't do this but DP does)
I hate drinking from a bottle. I think it stems from lukewarm school milk and all the slurping and boys belching. It makes me sick, fortunately I was able to breastfeed as I'm not sure how I'd have coped with bottle feeding.

I can't help it though and I'm not feeling judgemental, just sick as it makes me want to vomit.

HandyBendySandy · 01/03/2021 21:48

My late DM always said wearing long hair loose was a "sex signal".

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/03/2021 21:48

My mum is long gone now but she used to very disapproving of any ‘girls nights out’ after I was married, and god forbid her finding out about a girly weekend away Shock.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/03/2021 21:49

And she couldn’t bear DD playing football. It was butch apparently and she would never find a nice man 🤦‍♀️

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/03/2021 21:50

As football was ‘rife’ with lesbianism Grin
