Things you do that your Mother doesn't approve of/thinks are unladylike

Lighthearted!

My mother thinks it's terrible that I drink beer. Ladies don't drink beer. I'm 52 and she still pouts when she knows I've had some!

Any other unladylike ladies on here?

Oral sex! My mum is open-minded talking about stuff, not so much doing it! And swearing too.

ivfbabymomma1 · 01/03/2021 20:54

@Bunnybigears bovver boots that's it!!! I knew it was something like that lol

Diversion · 01/03/2021 20:55

Tattoos
Piercings
Coloured Hair
Not wearing an underskirt
Not ironing everything including knickers, bras, towels
Going in a pub on my own
Swearing
Drinking from a can or bottle
Not making my husbands packed lunch every single night
Staying away overnight on my own
Smoking, now vaping
Not sitting at the table for meals

My sister on the otherhand is my complete opposite

VinylDetective · 01/03/2021 20:56

@Laila747

Swearing.... At 39 years old I’ve never once sworn in front of my mum. None of my DC would ever swear in front of me either. I think it’s more of a respect thing than a ‘ladylike’ thing though
Seriously? My son reckons his foul mouth is because I swear like a sailor. I never swore in front of my mum though, she’d have needed smelling salts.
BarbaraofSeville · 01/03/2021 21:01

Not so much DM, more my DSis.

Not ironing.

Going to the pub for lunch all by myself (in normal times obviously, God I miss that).

Driving all the way to all by myself.

Traveling abroad all by myself, that's unthinkable.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 01/03/2021 21:02

boy shorts or anything else not feminine enough like my granny pants.

rabbitholes · 01/03/2021 21:05

Eating lunch, lunch is unnecessary and eating it is why I am overweight.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 01/03/2021 21:06

I dont send christmas cards.
Expecting DH to pull his weight around the house.

MadinMarch · 01/03/2021 21:07

Aaw... my mum died in 2000 when I was 42 , but she never made any of these judgements. She was a 'live and let live' sort of person, and thought i was (mainly) great!
She really was 1 in a million, she had her faults, but I miss her to this day....

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/03/2021 21:08

In the PC years (pre covid)....

Eating or drinking in the street
Drinking lager in a pint glass, only two halves were acceptable
Dying hair any colour that isnt mid brown
Having long hair post 40
Wearing "young" clothes
Wearing heels
Cooking any meal that doesnt include a huge amount of carbs
Playing video games
Online banking (as soon as you log in someone will come and steal your house you see)
and many more.....

AL (after lockdown)

There is literally nothing she would disapprove of, probably up to and including murder of her next door neighbour who has been doing her fucking head in for the last year :o

If this last year has taught us all anything, its what matters and what doesnt. She was actually disappointed when I said I might dye my pink hair a more natural shade, she has insisted I should keep it!

Pineapplemonkey · 01/03/2021 21:09

Not putting a ‘work appropriate’ outfit on, blow drying my hair and a full face of make up when I go to work every day. I live on my own and work from home. I literally see no one for days on end.

Staying up late and getting up late. Anything after 7am is slovenly, regardless of what time you go to bed

homeschoolingyay · 01/03/2021 21:09

@ivfbabymomma1 Doc martens.... she called them bother boots?! (I don't get it)

It's bovver boots, as worn by bovver boys. Trouble makers basically.

abbey130921 · 01/03/2021 21:09

Having lots of tattoos and not wearing flowery prints like she does lol

Theimpossiblegirl · 01/03/2021 21:10

She was a bit critical that I used a child minder when the girls were very small (finishing my degree) but afterwards acknowledged that it paid off in terms of career options, earning power and benefitted them more in the long run.

TillyTopper · 01/03/2021 21:11

I don't iron everything! This is shocking to her, she irons everything including knickers and tea towels.
I am learning Russian she thinks this is ridiculous and utterly pointless "Why would you want to speak to them?"
I still work full time as an IT consultant, she tells me I "should be part time by now", she'd like me to work in a pharmacy or bakery.
She was shocked when I got a takeaway for myself the other day, in her view "It's not worth it if there isn't a man in the house, and even then you should really cook it, but I suppose it's a treat".
There is a lot of fun to be had just by being reprobate old me!

SplendidSuns1000 · 01/03/2021 21:11

Tattoos, coloured hair, PDA, wearing jeans, doing yoga.
I can think of others but they're definitely far too unladylike to say Grin

When she found out I'm a housewife but won't be a mum she said my husband would be better off without me- that there's no point in being married if you don't have kids. She doesn't approve of him in any way shape or form (tattoos, beard, older than me) but apparently I don't even deserve him.

RosesAndHellebores · 01/03/2021 21:11

I ruined her life because she got pg with me
I was plain and not a party girl and therefore was not allowed to wear pink- even my NHS specs were blue
I have a full on professional job
I married a man whose antecedents were working class
I don't clean and like getting my hands dirty in the garden
DD was evidently deprived because she didn't have a pony.
She was most upset when I told her not to be bloody ridiculous as we lived in London (zone 2!)

I am 60 and I have still never pleased my mother. It is I now realise impossible as thanks to MNet I know she is a classic narcissist.

momtoboys · 01/03/2021 21:11

I don't do this because I was never allowed to as a child and never developed the habit, but my mum always thought that chewing gum was very unladylike!

Ruthietuthie · 01/03/2021 21:13

According to my mum, nail polish on the toes is VERY common. Nail polish on the fingers? Even more so.

noblegreenk · 01/03/2021 21:13

My Mum's always been really chilled out. My dad on the other hand hates seeing me drink out of pint glasses. I remember being in a pub with him and he asked what I wanted to drink, I asked for a pint of Guinness and he bought me two halves.

shiningstar2 · 01/03/2021 21:14

Not using a table cloth. I only use one when my mother is coming. The dog loves my mother and rushes to the window wagging her tail, imminently expecting her if I put a table cloth on the table Grin

Hoppinggreen · 01/03/2021 21:14

Eating in public
Eating generally
Watching TV unless it’s BBC1 on Sunday evenings
Having fun
Showing warmth and/or love for anyone

lightand · 01/03/2021 21:14

Another one only irons occasionally.
But now there is lockdown, she isnt doing as much either. Because people dont visit so she doesnt need to she says! I hadnt realised she was only doing it because of what she thinks people might say about her if she doesnt! Grin

Wowcherarestalkingme · 01/03/2021 21:16

Tattoos, swearing and sleeping late.

I’m 38 and could sort of understand it when I was 16.

BehindMyEyes · 01/03/2021 21:16

My ex MIL - having the TV on during the day "slovenly" and eating in the street - ditto . She would never comment on what you had on even if she thought it was lovely as she had been brought up not to comment on other people!
