What’s your favourite thing about staying in a hotel?

askmeagainin5 · 25/02/2021 19:07

Reminiscing on various lovely hotel stays and thinking about how I can’t wait to stay in one again. I think what I long for most is a big rainfall shower with lovely smelling mini toiletries, then wrapping up in a big white towel and sitting down on the chair in the room to peruse the dinner menu...

What’s your favourite part? Lovely big bed with white bedding? Ordering room service? Getting a bit dressed up to go down to the bar and have a drink?

Please do share your favourite things so I can read through them and get ridiculously excited over the thought of a possible stay in a lovely hotel later this year! Grin

Starfishing on a massive bed when I'm away for work.

That 'special occasion' feeling when it's for leisure.

AnnaSW1 · 26/02/2021 17:40

The breakfast 100%

ALongHardWinter · 26/02/2021 17:46

Extra large fluffy bath towels.
Not having to make my bed.
Having a wet room to shower in (I'm disabled so always request an accessible shower).
The buffet breakfast.

The lack of stuff - only having the clothes I need for the duration of my stay, not being confronted every morning by an overfilled wardrobe I can't face sorting out.

Tartyflette · 26/02/2021 18:00

Oh god, where do I start?
At my two favourite hotels, one in north Africa, one in Italy -- the pristine sheets, fluffy towels, indoor and outdoor pools, great views and really good food (especially breakfasts), wrap-around balcony with loungers, welcome cocktail and cool refreshing face cloth on arrival. And really lovely staff.

Pinkstars2501 · 26/02/2021 18:15

Oh god I miss this.
The only hotel I've ever not enjoyed is Travelodge. I've tried a few and they're all shit. I know they're very budget, but the bathrooms aren't even clean and always have musty drains!

Otherwise, I like most hotels.
I love a Premier Inn breakfast... Premier Inn is actually brilliant value for money, I think. Always clean, always comfy, always helpful. The one time I've had a bad experience in the night, they refunded straight away.

I like getting a surprise city or river view. I like sleeping in a bed I haven't made. I like having a long shower or bath and not freezing while I dry off (we don't have a radiator in our bathroom at home). I like spending the daytime wandering around a new place and then either going for dinner in a pub or getting a takeout to eat in the huge bed while watching tv. If I've been out for my meal, I'll always buy a massive bag of snacks and some premixed drinks and watch any old shite on tv while I gorge Grin
I like leaving a nice note on the hotel paper pad for the housekeeping team in the room on my last morning for some reason.

My favourite hotel so far is Boringdon Hall in Devon.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 26/02/2021 18:26

Oh all of it. If I ever win the lottery big time I shall go live at Claridges. I’ve never been but I saw the documentary they did on it and it looks divine.

I love watching the telly in foreign hotels and trying to work out what the bloody hell is going on.

Tartyflette · 26/02/2021 18:43

We once stayed at a very 'arty' hotel in Germany, just a big box on the side of a lake, didn't look very impressive.
We were shown up to our darkened room. The concierge pressed a switch, a shutter slid up and the entire outside wall was revealed to be
glass with spectacular views of the lake and river Danube just beyond it. Excellent dinner, Bauhaus type artwork on display.
There was also a wedding party going on and the (very fashionable) guests were going for rides in gondolas on the lake. Great for rubber necking people watching

Squidthing · 26/02/2021 18:44

Buffet breakfast, especially abroad with a million different options.

MotherWol · 26/02/2021 18:46

When there’s a Nespresso machine in the room, and I can make a coffee and get back into bed Brew

ImnotCarolineHirons · 26/02/2021 19:30

Extra large shower cubicle so I don't bash my elbows or extra large bath so I can submerge completely (yes I'm tall)

Little touches like a fruit bowl selection or some fancy water and snacks

A fabulous view (hopefully)

Epic breakfast where you can read the papers in peace and someone just keeps topping up the toast and coffee.

Veryverycalmnow · 26/02/2021 19:34

Little touches like a few different biscuits, types of tea, coffee, hot chocolate in mini packets. I'm easily pleased. I like a room with a bit of character, or hidden extras- I find myself being excited by the mundane if it'shidden somewhere first😁
"Ooh, look what happens when I open this cupboard- it has a fold- out ironing board!"

MargosKaftan · 26/02/2021 19:48

Oh I bloody love a mid priced hotel! Not too fancy, not nasty.

Love love love the conveyor belt of toast.

Adore chopped fruit and teeny tiny pastries as my breakfast starter.

A fluffy dressing gown 10 sizes too big so I look like a child borrowing my dads one.

I miss it soo much.

Ghostlyglow · 26/02/2021 20:42

We always stay in pretty cheap hotels (DP is meanGrin) so I don't have anything special to reminisce about, but just the fact I'm not in my horrid little house is good enough for meSmile

CarolinaWeeper · 26/02/2021 20:48

Definitely the breakfast buffet.

Although actually, I'm not a great lover of sleeping in hotel beds.....all the people that have slept on it before me and done god knows what. In hindsight I probably should never have watched the hotel inspector Envy

happymummy12345 · 26/02/2021 21:01

Can I say everything? Simply because if I'm staying in a hotel I'm not at home, because I really don't like our house (I never have, we rent it and it was only ever meant to be temporary until we can find somewhere we want to be permanent. Hopefully we can move in the next few years).

Anyway the last time we were in a hotel it was our 2nd wedding anniversary. We'd booked to see a show on stage, then we thought let's make a night of it and make it special. So we booked a room in a 5 star hotel. Neither of us had ever been in a place like that (not even close), we had the money so we thought it's for our wedding anniversary, let's treat ourselves. It was just stunning. Before we'd even walked in we stood outside and said "we have to come back here one day". We loved everything about it, and have been determined to go back. We had planned to go back for our 5th wedding anniversary which was last year, but obviously that didn't happen. So we are now hoping to go for our 10th in 2025 instead.

I'm always helpful in hotels as well. Both after an overnight stay and when I was on holiday. Before checking out we strip the bed and gather it up, gather up used towels, collect all rubbish and tie up the bags, and put any cups and spoons and so on together. And leave the room as close to how we found it as we can. I couldn't just leave the room a mess.

Abracadabra12345 · 26/02/2021 21:08

@Crockof

I'm not fancy, white sheets, purple walls, TV and all you can eat breakfast....... oh Premier Inn I miss you so much.
You and me both. And that legendary bed and even more legendary bath.

Lying on a huge bed watching junk TV which I’d never watch at home (because there’s no time)

Me time. Blissful, uninterrupted, guilt-free me time.

Great thread, OP

MagdasMadHouse · 26/02/2021 21:09

Room service
Hotel breakfast

If there's pool/spa on site then being able to go to that in my swimmers, robe and flip flops/slippers and back so I can wash with my own things, IYSWIM?

In a good hotel, then the super soft bed, the mountain of clean towels and a nice relaxed time! I'm a big fan of the maid service too.

alanpartridgefromtheoasthouse · 26/02/2021 21:11

I usually stay in them for work so for me it's all about 8 hours uninterrupted sleep. Total silence, total darkness. No farting husband or sleep-wailing toddler. Just peace and quiet and time on my own. ~cries hysterically~

Abracadabra12345 · 26/02/2021 21:11

@wendywoopywoo222

A bath. Only have a shower at home so a nice bathtub in a must.

After lockdown I'm booking a night out on my own just to wallow in the Bath.

The Bath.

I do book solo, local trips for this very reason. The Bath

evtheria · 26/02/2021 21:18

A freshly made bed that I didn’t do, room service (we don’t do food in our bedrooms at home, so this feels indulgent) and BREAKFAST BUFFETS!

3CCC · 26/02/2021 21:35

Tbh just the fact that hotels mean chances are I'm on holiday or something

Growing up in Cornwall ( a county with no motorways) I felt an exhilaration about going on a motorway because it meant I was going somewhere exciting.

I miss that the most

askmeagainin5 · 26/02/2021 22:27

How did I forget the breakfast in my OP?! Shock Definitely the best part! I love the different vibes of breakfast depending on what time you go down... If you wake up early and get there before the masses and have a lovely quiet one, or the mad dash if you’ve slept in a bit after a few too many the night before and service is ending soon Grin

Glad you’ve all enjoyed the thread as much as me! I’m mentally planning the perfect hotel stay now Smile

I very much agree with the Premier Inn love! Never had a bad experience. Stayed at one with my DM a few years ago and when checking out she mentioned she hadn’t slept great, not in a serious ‘I’ve had a really bad stay and slept awfully’ complaint way, just an flippant ‘god I’m a bit sleepy, didn’t sleep great’ and they instantly refunded us for our stay! I didn’t mention that I’d actually slept fantastically Wink

No cleaning
Someone making your bed
fresh towels
Breakfast
Love places with lots of seating so I can sit with tablet drink and browse while DH has nap and also people watch.
We stayed in one once where the bathroom had a heated floor. That was good. Only regret was not making use of the large rolltop bath.
We also hit lucky when we were once given a really large room. The old part of the hotel at the front overlooking the sea. We even had a three piece suite and coffee table. Also a desk to write at.ys we have just got the standard room but still a lovely experience

JimmyJabs · 27/02/2021 03:56

I never get a good night's sleep when I'm away from home (and usually not when I'm at home either - see the time of this post) so for me, being in a hotel is all about the breakfast. There must be a course consisting of hash browns with beans, followed by sausages and poached eggs, and lots of strong, milky coffee.

My favourite hotels to date have been the Tower Hotel in London, because it had a genuinely huge bed and some really lovely mood lighting, and the Grand Central in Glasgow, because there was haggis on the breakfast buffet. And, odd as it sounds, the Point A in Canary Wharf. It's a budget hotel with minuscule rooms where everything folds down out of the walls, but the room I got was in the basement had no windows, and once I had turned the lights out it was properly pitch black. Some would probably find it very claustrophobic but for me it was womb-like and soothing. I think it's the only time I've ever slept right through the night in a hotel. It loses points for no breakfast, but there is an old-fashioned greasy spoon diner right next door 😁
