The reading comprehension ‘over there’ is not the best.

I blame the teachers! Actually seriously, it is a very real thing that such skills have diminished, but at least our kids know what a fronted adverbial is. Grin

Hi all

Just catching up on the thread. I watched this last night - it's old (from the early 80s) but still very good. I think a few of you might enjoy it.

Father Christmas brought my son one of his books a couple of years ago but he is still a bit young to read it.

One of the reasons that this whole tragic episode happened is that people are stupid.

I just really hope I'm dead before there's an actual epidemic.

Worldgonecrazy · 25/02/2021 10:51

I was bemoaning the lack of great educational tv these days. We used to have Tomorrow’s World, Horizon, OU broadcasting on BBC2. Now it’s all lowest common denominator light entertainment with the odd politically motivated documentary thrown in.

T'was ever thus.

AiBU title: DS6 wants to play Fortnite...
Page one, "how old is DS?"

We've actually had a decent morning. DS2 is on to money for his maths. While he hasn't put pen to paper, he has understood and verbally answered all the questions, and we've had a play with the contents of the coin jar. 6 days left after today...

Wonders if DS1 will continue Chair Wars into day 5... A couple of years ago he got the dining chair with arms to stop him sliding off sideways while eating. In recent months, he's got worse at coming in, seeing food and eating. Told to sit in the chair before earing... perches on the arm. Melting down at the dinner table= going off to his room to calm down. DH swaps the chair... uproar... most meals this week because DS has continued to be irate about it and do the most wonderful dramatic demonstrations of how hard it is to get on to a normal chair, we've generally finished eating before he's been in a sensible state to eat...

I did well yesterday making the most of DH's "day off", getting him to supervise DS1's lessons while DS2 and I dealt with his pit/ bedroom. I think I won... although the novelty of DH and his different disposition did manage to very grudgingly put pencil to paper, which is progress
That child has been hard work this week to put it mildly.

Yes, and it's been like that for a generation.

I was watching Michael Palin's Pole to Pole last month, and it was so refreshing to watch something purely observational with no moralising about it. It didn't omit to mention issues like the ozone layer or poaching, but he didn't labour the point either.

I'm sure quiz shows had a lot more knowledge to them too, and a heck of a lot more questions.

To be fair, lots of posters use the number of the child in the family, not the age.

Hope Evenstar is okay today.

Btw, does anyone know, when hospitality opens indoors, is it still subject to test and trace and two weeks quarantine? Thanks.

God I hope not. I just want to go out and be normal!
AcornAutumn · 25/02/2021 12:28

Sir I must admit, I just assume it will be subject to those

I am not too fussed because I just won't go but my mother is driving me mad and if I can't even take her for food...!

Worldgonecrazy · 25/02/2021 12:40

Indoor is 17th May. I guess feasibility of outdoor dining will depend on individual restaurants. They can open outdoor dining from 22 April.

As far as I understand it, no track and trace, but I haven’t read that bit of the legislate.

Just noticed this online

Face masks in classrooms to last until Easter, says Gavin Williamson
Face coverings should be worn in secondary school classrooms, Gavin Williamson has said, confirming it is "a temporary measure" that will be "replaced at Easter".

Worldgonecrazy · 25/02/2021 12:43

There is a summary here:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-response-spring-2021/covid-19-response-spring-2021-summary

It doesn’t mention track and trace.

However read the paragraph that tells us that the Government will let us know when we can legally hug other people.

How the fuck have we reached a point where we have allowed the government to dictate who we can hug.

It is shameful.

‘Should’ not ‘must’

I hope that at least some teachers will fight for the kids.

When I first came across MN, this really confused me "DD12 - how many children does this person have?!" I thought.

It's only advice on hugging so you can legally do it whenever you want (assuming the legal bits are being followed). I have been doing so!

Just chatting to my elderly dad on the phone; he's in Scotland. No internet. Asking where can he buy clothes such as socks, he is going to try to get a bus into town to see if any there.

It's daft isn't it he has had his vaccine. Guess they don't think about the elderly people not being able to buy stuff online. I'll order some if he can't find anything.

Like DM not being able to contact her GP herself... she tends to end up getting DB to do it online.... the irony is he lives within 100m of the place!

Or children being able to buy shoes that fit. Especially if they have awkward feet that don't suit supermarket cheapies.

ISaySteadyOn · 25/02/2021 13:47

Quite. DS did not really sleep last night so neither did I.

I noticed M&S has some school uniforms in the front for people going back to school.

Dad was asking why the shops are shut etc

SirSamuelVimes · 25/02/2021 13:53

I'm in bit of a tizz about school uniform. DD definitely needs new school shoes and probably new trainers as well (they wear them all day on pe days). Probably bits and pieces of uniform clothing too. But we are about to hit the bottom of our overdraft and I just cannot afford to buy anything before pay day next week. Worried that everything will be out of stock by then. Sad

Evenstar · 25/02/2021 13:55

Hi everyone, thank you for all the good wishes and advice 💐 I decided to go to A & E this morning, it was actually OK apart from the nurse who greeted me at the door by asking what the problem was and saying it was something my GP should have dealt with, “but we will see you”

Everyone else was nothing but kind, and the person who examined me was a lovely specialist physiotherapist that I met a couple of years ago when I had a hip problem. She has been redeployed to A and E, was really thorough, and has sent the GP a list of investigations that need to be done. She discussed my case with a consultant and they both feel it is back related despite the problem not being in that area, though the consultant said it could be my thyroid and they were horrified that is almost 2 years since I had the bloods done for that.

She told me that GP’s have really varied in their response and they have had people coming in for dressings and other things that the surgeries should have done.

I am glad I went as at least I have had someone see me face to face and that should speed things up as I have the telephone appointment tomorrow. It made such a difference just to have people show some kindness and give you some time.

I wore a mask, with my lanyard as I felt uncertain and was told to take it off if I wanted as I was exempt, so that was one less worry as I felt hot and sick and couldn’t get a breath.

Did they take bloods there?

Will they mark follow up as urgent?

Mum had an incident in summer and one reason paramedics wanted her to go to A&E was they wanted bloods done immediately.

It will not be compulsory for school pupils to take Covid tests twice a week, nor wear face coverings in class, the schools minister Nick Gibb has confirmed.
