Time for a new game of Mornington Crescent

It's time to begin a new game and I better not make the mistake of playing the closed stations rule in zone 1 again, which led to the win by @WalkingInTheAir13. To have a winner after only three and a half months is quite rare this century.

So I shall begin outside zone 1 for once, starting at Tooting Broadway, the first game I have ever joined to start south of the river.

Right I've thought long and hard about this as I think there is a subsection (8a) allowing for a shunt along to southwark as it is the last Friday of the month.

I could be incorrect though as I'm not sure whether it's allowed in a non leap year?

00100001 · 26/03/2021 18:25

It is allowed. The precedent was set in 1504 when Columbus utilised the leap for his sailing to the Americas.

DuckonaBike · 26/03/2021 18:31

Thanks for clarifying that Binary.

I move to St John’s Wood. Interestingly, this is the only station on the London Underground whose name doesn’t include any letters from the word “mackerel”.

00100001 · 26/03/2021 18:38

Well, if you're fishing for compliments, cod you not? It's most unbecoming.

But. Ow you've declared the mackerel fact, it imposes the Maritime Rules upon us...so Waterloo

againandagainoncemore · 26/03/2021 18:50

Ok so if we're playing Maritime rules and my previous move was allowed, I am feeling rather confident at Docklands

This does take us in a precarious position, but I stand my ground here.

againandagainoncemore · 26/03/2021 18:57

Good Lord In my fit of confidence I mixed up my stations with lines. I know it's too late to submit Canary Wharf so I shall withdraw my last move and we remain calmly at Waterloo

00100001 · 26/03/2021 19:04

Please don't forget the necessity for pins whilst playing Maritime Rules. It anchorages players to think outside the box.

West India quay

00100001 · 26/03/2021 19:05

Pins = puns.

To not submit puns, would be ferry poor form.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 26/03/2021 19:28

Canada Water-bad-pun-that-was, then. Obviously.

Chubbaibu · 26/03/2021 19:57

Puns it is... although Canada Water is fondly known as Canada Woof Woof in this house after the little one was allowed to announce the destination on the DLR a while ago...

Softie Sofeners all board we are heading down,
Front of the Carriage,

Cross Harbour

And we wish we were in Scarborough.

DuckonaBike · 26/03/2021 20:17

Taking a punt on Pontoon Dock

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 26/03/2021 20:42

Oh dear @againandagainoncemore thank goodness you realised there is no such station as Docklands. Moves could have been invalid under the Hampstead Protocol on Invalid Moves of 1967, a document which took some 14 years to agree on after the disastrous Coronation tournament when someone played Addison Road on a Sunday.

So leaving Pontoon Dock I venture using the DLR rule to Custom House.

I am still in shock at the news on another thread that there are people who have never played the game of games.

againandagainoncemore · 26/03/2021 20:57

Thankyou. I've been doing further research and shall revise some more before making any suggestions.

I did see that a convention in 2001 declared that when the Olympic Games were agreed, a station Docklands station was planned. This made it into a Columbus second edition map which mysteriously disappeared shortly thereafter.

00100001 · 26/03/2021 21:04

I do believe I can now play Bethnal Green

What with the Maritime Rules having ceased for obvious reasons.

noideawhatusernametochoose · 26/03/2021 21:05

I don't want to cause a problem, but is the DLR Rule actually valid on a Friday?

I'd like to go for a safe move using Herbert's Fifth Vertical and say Tower Hill.

00100001 · 26/03/2021 21:06

It's the last Friday in March, so DLR is safe to play.

noideawhatusernametochoose · 26/03/2021 21:06

Sorry, cross posted. I rescind my move and leave you at Bethnal Green. Good point about the Maritime Rules...
DuckonaBike · 26/03/2021 21:15

Good heavens Cuthbert; I am deeply shocked. Let’s hope it isn’t true.

againandagain raises an interesting point about the Unopened Stations rule. It first came up some time in the late 1950s when John Betjeman attempted to play Alexandra Palace in a friendly against Middlesex County Cricket Club. I think you’ll find that it is permitted if the Brent Protocol is observed. I hope that’s clear to everyone.

With that in mind, I move to Cannon Hill.

00100001 · 26/03/2021 21:46

Burnt Oak

againandagainoncemore · 26/03/2021 22:34

Well if we're observing the Brent protocol then presumably we can play a reverse now?

Regents Street

00100001 · 26/03/2021 22:40

A classic move there. I do like how you're emulating Gretel Jenkinson's final volley of plays of the 1935 Summer Series.

However, it does leave you in a weaker position long term, especially as I am going to play Northwood.

Sp1ke3 · 27/03/2021 00:27

I don’t believe Northwood is allowed on the weekend before Easter following the Bishop Pym debacle in 1976.

I suggest West Ham to follow the points of the compass.

DuckonaBike · 27/03/2021 07:30

Well the obvious next move is Southgate. I’m a bit troubled that we’re going widdershins. It’s allowed, but is it unlucky?

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 27/03/2021 08:13

It’s the full moon this weekend which I think should calm your concerns.

Finishing the compass with East Putney.

MrsWP · 27/03/2021 08:19

I thought it time I brave a turn at this game.

As an absolute newbie I was relieved to see Southgate on a Saturday morning as it's the perfect combination for the Off-Peak protocol to come into play, so an easy way for me to start off and not feel too overwhelmed.

If I have this correct then the next stop will be Dangenham Heathway
