Vegetarian sushi that comes in same takeaway tray as salmon sushi?!

(Assuming you like sushi of course)

@Strawberrylacesmmm

DS1 is clearly going to be more disciplined/principled about how he eats than my attempt at being vegetarian (I go through fish eating phases). Wouldn't have bothered me to have things packaged together.
I wouldn't, no. Salmon can be a bit 'wet' and leak into the tray.

Packaged together is a very broad concept.

But your DS is far from unusual in his stance on this.
@mathanxiety from what he has said I think he finds it disturbing to see animals being eaten, like for example how it might be for someone to see a family pet being eaten. If he sees it as akin to animal cruelty for example, that's a bit trickier than teaching tolerance of different views. It's the reaction he is experiencing that I hope will settle.
I try to switch off from what others are eating, but there are some things I avoid having to witness if at all possible. Things like Ribs, drumsticks (it's hard to disassociate when people are gnawing on bones, red red so rare it's dripping on the plate & fish with heads.

I think it's similar to many peoples feelings if someone was eating dog

🤮

I'd eat it but I'm a horribly selfish vegan and eat this way only because of my health rather than animal/environmental reasons. 😬

No I would never eat anything which was near fish products. I hate the smell/taste of fish it makes me feel really queasy and sick. Your son is not being unreasonable, I can tell if food has been even slightly contaminated by seafood e.g by a spoon.

kissmelittleass · 20/02/2021 23:55

Definitely NOT 😡🤮

Stompythedinosaur · 21/02/2021 01:23

I wouldn't have done. It would have had fish on it.

waitingforgranny · 21/02/2021 07:29

I was vege for many many years and I would have eaten it. The world more vege friendly these days though. It was hard enough to be vege in the first place but now it's easier

EileenGC · 21/02/2021 08:08

I’ve never eaten meat in my life, was raised veggie and I’ve never tried it.

I’d much rather be served vegetarian sushi on a different plate or tray, and I don’t eat anything that’s been cooked with/in meat or fish products.

I’d eat the sushi you describe if it hadn’t touched the salmon and I was certain it had been prepared separately. I’ve also spent several weeks in Asia for work and at one point became much more flexible than I would be at home, because it was almost impossible to explain to the restaurants what being veggie meant. I wouldn’t have noodles in fish stock, but I’d eat veg that had been grilled next to the fish - if that makes sense. Often that would be the only meal of the day and the restaurants really didn’t understand.

But I grew up in a country that didn’t get vegetarianism either, so going on a school trip or eating out at local pubs meant I had to pick the chips that hadn’t touched the chicken because they wouldn’t actually serve me a single plate of chips. Salads were a nightmare because they all have tuna and when asked to remove the tuna, they wouldn’t understand why. I wouldn’t pick the tuna off a salad for example, it’s so fine that it would be all over the salad anyway.

@PurpleDaisies

Plenty of people seem to think you can be a vegetarian who eats fish. A school I worked in once had fish fingers as a veggie option. I wonder if that’s why they came on the same tray.
So true, I was reviewing menus at my (then) new job. I pointed out that there were no vegetarian options and asked the manager to ensure every day had a minimum of one vegetarian option and that one day a week was meat free.

She was adamant that fish was a vegetarian option, I had to be very firm and force her to chance the menu to my correct definition of vegetarian. I had this discussion with her Every Single Week until she left.

RampantIvy · 21/02/2021 10:48

That's just not true. It smells fishy.

Raw salmon and tuna shouldn't smell fishy. If they do it means they are very fresh.

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 21/02/2021 14:25

@sotiredofthislonelylife

No, definitely not! I have been vegetarian for about 35 years, it’s annoying when people enquire whether I eat fish. No. Of course not. If you eat fish, you are a pescatarian, not a vegetarian.
The OP isn't asking you if you would eat the fish sushi. She is asking if you would eat the vegetarian sushi that has been served on the same tray as the fish.

I'm a vegan and personally I would eat it. Cross contamination doesn't bother me that much.

RampantIvy · 21/02/2021 14:41

aren't very fresh

JackieWeaver4PrimeMinister · 21/02/2021 15:04

I'd eat it. But I am vegetarian due to a really bad bout of food poisoning from meat when I was a teen. Meat in general just makes me feel sick now, more so the texture of it than the smell etc, so maybe I am a bit more lax than some

Yellowhighheels · 21/02/2021 17:23

I wouldn't, I don't want my food to have touched meat or fish at all.
