Vegetarians... Would you eat this?

Vegetarian sushi that comes in same takeaway tray as salmon sushi?!

(Assuming you like sushi of course)

I'd eat it, but then my reasons for vegetarianism are to do with environmentalism not finding meat or fish repellent per se, so as long as no extra animal was being used in my food I wouldn't be bothered about any 'contamination'. But plenty of people find any animal product disgusting in itself so I guess they'd say no, people's reasons for not eating meat vary quite substantially...

unmarkedbythat · 20/02/2021 19:01

I'd really prefer not to.

AllFrightOnTheNight · 20/02/2021 19:21

I would- my food being in close vicinity of meat isn't an issue for me.
I understand that others may have different views.

He is vegetarian for ethical reasons and a year ago would have happily eaten the salmon sushi - and loved seafood generally. I think recently he struggles seeing anyone eat fish/meat and is starting to feel repulsed by it - which is going to be something to manage. I will need to be a bit understanding.

I would be a bit concerned about not wanting to see others eating meat. That’s not really avoidable in life.

Hoppinggreen · 20/02/2021 19:56

Dd wouldn’t

BrilliantBetty · 20/02/2021 19:57

No. Fish is very pungent. I don't eat things from the oven if my DH is cooking fish either.

Strawberrylacesmmm · 20/02/2021 20:01

I know @PurpleDaisies. When it was about ethics I was able to explain to him about respect for different views etc. But the strong reaction to the sushi makes me realise that it's become a bit more. Hopefully will settle down.

How old is he? I might have missed that.

However if you just think meat and fish are disgusting that's a different issue
This is the reason for me, so its a hard pass on the 'vegetarian' sushi from me.

lastqueenofscotland · 20/02/2021 20:22

I would personally

BlankTimes · 20/02/2021 20:22

No. I wouldn't eat anything cooked with meat/fish or served on the same plate/tray.

sotiredofthislonelylife · 20/02/2021 20:40

No, definitely not!
I have been vegetarian for about 35 years, it’s annoying when people enquire whether I eat fish. No. Of course not.
If you eat fish, you are a pescatarian, not a vegetarian.

BiscuitSewingTin · 20/02/2021 20:46

Yes, I would because no more animals are being harmed by it just being in the same box. I’m also anti-waste so throwing something away uneaten would be difficult for me. I can understand that it might be repulsive for some people though.

I was just about to comment something similar to this.

I would eat it, but I am the world crappiest veggie, so it seems. My reasons are environmental too. Therefore, when making food choices I will always choose veggie/vegan options - however today, my DP was going to throw half a beef burger away..I was starving and thinking of the environmental impact of food waste drove me insane, so I ended up eating it.

I think levels of vegetarianism/veganism are very personal to the persons reasons and beliefs for choosing eat a certain way.

You cannot really judge if your son is being "fussy" by your own standards.

Many vegans/veggies would shoot me down totally for eating half a burger, but inline for my reasons for not choosing to eat meat - the waste of a dead animal - when i was hungry- being thrown in the bin, didn't sit right with me.

The burger would have been thrown, I would have ate something else, thus putting more pressure on the whole flawed waste system. Makes me a rubbish veggie, but I have my personal reasons. The same as your son has his.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 20/02/2021 20:56

Yup id eat it. Like PP, im veggie for environmentalism

Vinorosso74 · 20/02/2021 21:08

No, I wouldn't.

DownWhichOfLate · 20/02/2021 21:09

I’d eat it. But I don’t mind things like veggie burgers cooking next to meat on a bbq, or even being taken off the bbq using the same implements as the (cooked) meat burgers.

Okokokbear · 20/02/2021 21:10

No

ArmchairTraveller · 20/02/2021 21:13

I’ve been vegetarian for 45 years, and the smell of fish is harder for me to deal with than any other form of carnivorous fodder.
Please cut him some slack, my parents didn’t.

Cherrysherbet · 20/02/2021 21:15

No, I wouldn’t eat it.

Insertfunnyname · 20/02/2021 21:18

Yes I would

Strawberrylacesmmm · 20/02/2021 21:28

I cook really good food for him. As I said earlier I don't eat meat/only occasionally eat fish so its not like he is generally made to feel odd or a burden. Implying he is fussy is not typical and was mostly because it would have saved me money, sushi is expensive but they love it. Also perhaps I am more used to putting up with things cooked/served alongside each other as I have always had to be - so it is a different approach to think about.

OP posts:
Mykittensmittens · 20/02/2021 21:28

I don’t think this is about labels.

If you’re a person who doesn’t like the smell/taste/ethic of fish then you wouldn’t want your non-fish sushi smelling/tasting/being near it.

I’m a vegetarian (not a pescatarian - as others have said - different ‘label’). I haven’t eaten meat or fish for 40 years. My own stance is not wanting to eat dead animals morally and equally not enjoying eating dead animals. So therefore (for example) I couldn’t care less about sharing some vegetarian sushi from a tray which had fish sushi as long as I didn’t have to eat the fish. In the same way as I’d be okay having a sandwich from a buffet plate which had both vegetarian and meat sandwiches on it.

However if someone’s choice was about smell/taste alone I can see how this would be repugnant.

I totally respect anyone else’s preferences and requests.

These days things need to be less of a rule set and label and more transient. Frankly for me if people eat half the meat or fish they do the environment is better off.
