Vegetarians... Would you eat this?

Vegetarian sushi that comes in same takeaway tray as salmon sushi?!

(Assuming you like sushi of course)

Depends.

When I get sushi, dd2 (pescatarian) & I tuck in voraciously, & ds & dd1 (meat eaters, not keen on fish, would have preferred a different takeaway in the first place but it wasn't their turn to pick) eat veggie sushi.

It generally comes in different trays but it wouldn't be a big deal if it didn't.

It's very different from say, eating a roast dinner where the veggies have been cooked around the meat - so a vegetarian would obviously not want potatoes that have cooked in meat fat.

No one in my family would be bothered that the fishy sushi is sitting next to the veggie sushi in a tray, given that neither of them is sloushing around in juices from the other.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 20/02/2021 21:29

I'm Omni and vegan/vegetarian sushi tastes different when it's packaged by itself or with fish. I think it's better with the fish next to it

You do need to get separate trays for him.

VioletAlder · 20/02/2021 21:33

Having said that - presumably the sushi place sells vegetarian sushi because, well, they see vegetarians as a market - as well as omnivores who just like vegetarian sushi.

So I'd be surprised if they'd object to a request to pack it separately.

Mind you, sushi is also incredibly easy to make (and much cheaper once you've got the basics in). Cook rice, sprinkle with seasoning whilst cutting through it, place on matte side of the Nori sheet, add filling, roll up - or season and make rice balls/Nigiri/etc. You just have to be aware of when Dashi is used it normally contains Bonito.

Might be something worthwhile learning for the rest of lockdown?

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

Sorry but no I wouldn't eat that. Vegetarians don't eat anything that has a face so fish is definitely out.
The sushi is vegetarian
tenlittlecygnets · 20/02/2021 21:35

Depends. I cook meat and veggie things in same oven but using different utensils for each and veg on top of meat.

Veterinari · 20/02/2021 21:36

yes, I would eat it

Gubanc · 20/02/2021 21:37

It depends. I used to refuse things like this then I relaxed a bit. (And now I'm not a vegetarian.)
I think it's a process for a lot of people. When I fist became a vegetarian I was rather 'passionate' about it, calling the rest of my family 'corpse eaters' and similar. I'm sure they were glad when I moved out. 😃

Lilimoon · 20/02/2021 21:37

I'd eat it, no problem. Ethical veggie for 30 years.

PreyingMantlepiece · 20/02/2021 21:38

Definitely not.
Even during omnivore periods, I wouldn't.
Fish and I are a huge no.
Not nice.

AnnaSW1 · 20/02/2021 21:39

I wouldn't

Strawberrylacesmmm · 20/02/2021 21:47

I do make sushi but youngest loves salmon and sushi grade salmon isn't cheap (and I have to shop at a fancier supermarket than usual to get it). My sushi is mainly just maki rolls so not very exciting. Maybe I need to experiment.

Just to be clear, I didn't think eldest would eat the salmon. Avocado doesn't have a face!

Also out of interest for some posters - raw salmon doesn't smell fishy or have much smell at all.

But separate boxes from now on!

WatchWatch · 20/02/2021 21:54

Yes.

But I've worked in restaurant kitchens and I know unless it's a vegetarian restaurant my food will have been touched by things that have touched meat, including the chef's hands.

As long as I'm not eating meat I don't care.

mathanxiety · 20/02/2021 22:01

When it was about ethics I was able to explain to him about respect for different views etc. But the strong reaction to the sushi makes me realise that it's become a bit more. Hopefully will settle down.

I would advise you to work on that with him instead of waiting for intolerance to settle down. Just because it comes from an ethical angle doesn't mean he can treat others badly.

BobbidyBob · 20/02/2021 22:08

No. Absolutely not.

Strawberrylacesmmm · 20/02/2021 22:13

@mathanxiety from what he has said I think he finds it disturbing to see animals being eaten, like for example how it might be for someone to see a family pet being eaten. If he sees it as akin to animal cruelty for example, that's a bit trickier than teaching tolerance of different views. It's the reaction he is experiencing that I hope will settle.

It's not 'fishy'. It smells and tastes deliciously of lovely fresh tuna and salmon (sorry, vegetarians and vegans). But it does carry the smell and taste onto the veg*an selections.
StanfordPines · 20/02/2021 22:16

I would. It’s only been on the same tray. It’s not like it’s cooked on the same grill or something like that is it.

LizzieBirmingham · 20/02/2021 22:17

I wouldn’t

DialsMavis · 20/02/2021 22:20

I'm vegan and I would eat it, me eating the veggie sushi wouldn't cause harm so down the hatch it would go.

mathanxiety · 20/02/2021 22:20

Does he understand that people sometimes feel under attack when someone lectures them on cruelty to animals or being a boiler of bunnies?

It's best to keep thoughts like that under his hat regardless of his thoughts on cruelty. You can campaign for an end to something you find repugnant without being offensive.

BrilliantBetty · 20/02/2021 22:45

That's just not true. It smells fishy.

You might need a covid test. Smile

Strawberrylacesmmm · 20/02/2021 22:52

Hmm...maybe I have a terrible sense of smell!!
