Foreign Netflix thread

This may be a dud thread that no one will respond to Grin but I’ve read so many of the Netflix recommendation threads and the things recommended are all the usual, always in English. So I wanted to start a thread for the appreciation, and recommendation, of their many other language offerings!

So my recent shows are:
The barrier - Spanish dystopian drama about a killer virus, maybe a bit close to our current situation! But I enjoyed it.
Alice in borderland - a Japanese show about people trapped in an alternate Tokyo and forced to play killer games
Revenge - Thai drama which is brutal. A woman and her daughter suffer a terrible fate at the hands of 7 men, so not one to watch if you would find that kind of thing triggering. But the revenge part is very satisfying. It’s also a bit crazy and downright strange in parts but total escapism.

I’m always on the lookout for new foreign shows to watch so would love any recommendations.

Suburra! Criminals and politicians fighting over land in Ostia, near Rome.

Casa de Papel obviously.

Loved Elite too.

Home for Christmas, a Norwegian show, watched one Christmas 2019 and one Christmas 2020 with my daughter. It's brilliant.

I must confess I haven’t watched any yet - I’ve been so overwhelmed by the amount of English language stuff on there that I haven’t ventured outwards yet :o apart from some anime although I can’t remember which are subbed vs dubbed.

I think one on my list is something like It’s ok not to be ok? My stepdaughter is really into k drama and recommended it, and it clearly sounded good as I added it to my list.

Thanks for starting this thread and I hope it gets lots of responses, it’ll inspire me to branch out a bit again! I used to love watching foreign movies especially when I worked at the library and could borrow free DVDs and often requested foreign titles. There’s just so much out there, I’m really interested in animation from other countries especially.

Velvet, set in 1950s department store, utterly charming like a soothing hot chocolate.

La Mante - French thriller about a female serial killer. I was addicted!

Shitsel
Unorthodox

Call My Agent is very popular.

So easy and enjoyable to watch. Love it.

UpTheLaganInABubble · 19/02/2021 23:57

Seconding Money Heist/Casa De Papel and Home for Christmas.

Off the top of my head I'll add Lupin, Rita, Trapped, and Ragnarok.
I've just started The Valhalla Murders which is good so far, and next on my list is Call My Agent as I keep seeing it recommended by people

PolarnOPirate · 19/02/2021 23:57

I like cosy homey things like Rita and Bonus Family. In fact I might rewatch Bonus Family!

FredWinnie · 20/02/2021 00:30

Marianne - a French horror.

Partners for Justice - a Korean crime series. (A bit overacted or overdramatic in places but really good story lines)

Rita - is all round lovely.

(I'm always looking out for good horrors, if anyone can recommend any?)

bababra · 20/02/2021 00:32

To the lake is a Russian dystopian series

CurlyReds · 20/02/2021 00:33

I’m currently enjoying My Holo Love, a Korean drama about a girl who falls in love with a hologram. If you like sci fi then Dark (a German series) is AMAZING.

CurlyReds · 20/02/2021 00:35

Oh and a Korean sci fi movie called Space Sweepers! (I cried at the end)

Andylion · 20/02/2021 00:37

Velvet
Grand Hotel
Call My Agent
Home for Christmas
Morocco (only one season 😔)
Babylon Berlin
Oktoberfest

Andylion · 20/02/2021 00:41

Secrets in the Hot Spring

babbi · 20/02/2021 00:42

Il Processo - the Trial - Italian - very good

Groinpainruiningmylife · 20/02/2021 00:45

Dark is pretty good! If you haven't watched it but yet you're lucky because you can binge watch it now! I had to wait for each season to come out and each time spent ages working out who everyone was again!

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 20/02/2021 00:46

Another vote for call my agent and lupin- both fab and make me
Want to be in Paris...!

StressedTired · 20/02/2021 00:46

The Rain - Danish drama about a virus spread in rain, first series is brilliant, second series was a strain, gave up on the third series, they could have left it at one but dragged it out too long.
Love is a Bonus Book - Korean rom com drama, the most delightful cosy programme I've ever seen, absolutely loved it!

groundcontroltomontydon · 20/02/2021 08:04

The Last Word - about a widow who becomes a eulogist. Funny and poignant.
Carlo & Malik - police drama set in Rome. Bit of a shaky start but the plot gets better.

ShulamithFirestone · 20/02/2021 08:07

Lupin (French) is good - a modern day reimagining of Arsène Lupin.

Ethos (Turkish) is a real slow burn, but excellent.

Lunaballoon · 20/02/2021 08:22

Not on Netflix but Walter Presents on Channel 4, Deutschland 83, 86 and coming soon Deutschland 89. Gripping drama involving Stasi agents in east Germany around the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall. I can’t wait for the latest!

Meruem · 20/02/2021 08:24

I’ve seen a couple of these. I loved Dark, I have seen the first 2 seasons of The Rain and the third is in my watch list but I also have gone off it a bit. I liked unorthodox, started shitsel but didn’t really get into it. Also started to the lake a while back, must finish that actually! But lots I haven’t heard of, so plenty to look up this weekend!

As a family we enjoyed Switched, it’s a Japanese show about 2 girls who switch bodies, but it’s quite sweet. Victim number 8 was good, it’s about the aftermath of a terrorist bomb, and a guy who gets framed for it. Film wise, we watched red dot at the weekend, which was better than expected.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 20/02/2021 08:25

I loved Unauthorized Living

Blogdog · 20/02/2021 08:33

Baron Noir is good - a kind of french House of Cards
Borgen is also worth a look
Biohackers - German series about a family DNA hunt

QuentinInQuarantino · 20/02/2021 08:33

Casa de Papel (money heist)
Grand hotel
Cable Girls
High Seas
Velvet
(The latter four are all made by the same production company so if you like one you’ll like them all. I love them, they’re like downtown but MORE dramatic!)
Criminal (Spain, France, Germany and UK)
Lisbon from Money Heist is in something good called “things you left behind” about a teacher who commits suicide and her replacement but it’s a bit too close to home for me!
