Foreign Netflix thread

This may be a dud thread that no one will respond to Grin but I’ve read so many of the Netflix recommendation threads and the things recommended are all the usual, always in English. So I wanted to start a thread for the appreciation, and recommendation, of their many other language offerings!

So my recent shows are:
The barrier - Spanish dystopian drama about a killer virus, maybe a bit close to our current situation! But I enjoyed it.
Alice in borderland - a Japanese show about people trapped in an alternate Tokyo and forced to play killer games
Revenge - Thai drama which is brutal. A woman and her daughter suffer a terrible fate at the hands of 7 men, so not one to watch if you would find that kind of thing triggering. But the revenge part is very satisfying. It’s also a bit crazy and downright strange in parts but total escapism.

I’m always on the lookout for new foreign shows to watch so would love any recommendations.

To the Lake. It’s absolutely brilliant. Russian. Keep going with it. Best thing I’ve watched for ages. It’s so good.

KeflavikAirport · 20/02/2021 08:38

Deutschland 83 and 86 are fucking banging TV. Can’t wait for 89.

Blogdog · 20/02/2021 08:38

I’ve heard Kingdom (Korean) is excellent but haven’t watched it yet.

The Legacy of the Bones trilogy (Spanish) is good also.

A Korean series, Crash Landing on You.
Best thing I’ve ever seen.

For those of you who like Korean dramas there’s a long running thread on streamed tv topic called MsLattés Daebak Cybercafé which is lovely and has excellent reviews and recommendations.

Andante57 · 20/02/2021 08:39

I also can’t wait for Deutschland 89.

Train to Busan is a great Korean zombie film but I think its amazon prime rather than Netflix.
Completely agree with To the Lake - fab.
Hold your Breath - a great French disaster film where a toxic had comes up from the ground and everyone had to get up on to of buildings.
Alive - good Korean zombie movie, really enjoyed this one.
The Night Eats the Day - really good French zombie film. (yes I like zombie films, so shoot me!)
The Valhalla Murders - very good Icelandic crime drama. Originally on BBC I think.
Red Dot - average Swedish thriller where a canning couple are being stalked.
I really enjoy foreign cinema but am quite unadventurous in the genres I go for. Any other zombie/dystopia recommendations gratefully received!

The bridge on BBC iPlayer. Excellent plot and characters.

chomalungma · 20/02/2021 09:43

A couple of Norwegian ones:

Lillehammer - a mixture of English and Norwegian, about a Mafia boss who goes on witness protection in Norway. Very funny

Occupied - about Norway being slowly taken over by Russia because of oil and gas issues.

peak2021 · 20/02/2021 10:02

If you like Deustchland 83 and the others, see if you can watch The Lives of Others (Das Leben den Anderen), which is one of the best films I have ever seen.

LynetteScavo · 20/02/2021 10:15

Parasite is a South Korean black comedy thriller. Best film I've seen in ages.

Definitely one of the best films I’ve ever seen. A brilliant portrayal of the appalling East German regime.

Two other enjoyable films set in East Germany:

The Legend of Rita about a Baader Meinhof style gang who kill a policeman and are given safe haven in East Germany. Then the Wall comes down.....

Barbara - a doctor is banished to the provinces for helping someone escape from East Berlin. Beautiful scenery on the Baltic Coast.

Andante57 · 20/02/2021 10:29

LynetteScavo - is Parasite very depressing? - I try to avoid depressing films - or does it have like in Crash Landing mixing up dark or serious scenes with comedy?

ApocalypseNowt · 20/02/2021 10:37

El Marginal - Argentine prison drama. First season is good but the second season is just BRILLIANT. Brutal violence and strong language though ( I don't mind that but I know it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea!).

Plonque · 20/02/2021 10:49

Thanks for this thread! Love a good subtitle Grin

Blogdog · 20/02/2021 16:55

@LynetteScavo I didn’t find Parasite depressing, more thought-provoking. It’s actually very funny in parts but has a fairly stark message about inequality which stays with you long after the end credits roll. It definitely deserved its best picture win in my opinion.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/02/2021 16:59

Having thoroughly enjoyed Train to Busan yesterday this is a great thread.
dh likes all the scandi series, but I lose interest in them.

Violetparis · 20/02/2021 17:01

Caliphate is excellent, it's a Swedish drama about school girls being groomed by Isis.
Also, The Woods, a polish drama based on a Harlan Coben novel. Both on Netflix.

AliasGrape · 20/02/2021 17:06

Mine have all been mentioned I think but am placemarking so I can come back to the thread

Overrunwithlego · 20/02/2021 17:10

The Announcer, which is on All 4 is a good one.

I was going to say this too!

I'm also loving Better Than Us, which is also Russian. About robots. Similar to the Channel 4 series Humans. The main guy was also in To The Lake.

I've been Duolingo-ing Russian over lockdown - can only pick out basic words and phrases from these shows, but it makes me happy when I do! Grin

I also quite liked Into The Night, which is a French series about people who survive an apocalyptic event by being on a plane.

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 20/02/2021 17:19

Shtisel is brilliant
To the Lake

CirceOfAeaea · 20/02/2021 17:58

Spiral (Engrenages) is on iplayer - french cop drama.
I thought Kingdom (Korean horror) was great (Netflix)
Another vote for Dark, and Call my agent for something a bit fluffier.

Sowingbees · 20/02/2021 18:16

Is there anything, especially in Spanish that you'd recommend for teens. I'm currently looking after a Spanish teen (although he also seems to know quite a bit of German and French,-at least more than my teen does)

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 20/02/2021 18:21

Possibly Elite for an mid/older teen.

Cherrypi · 20/02/2021 18:32

Love and anarchy. Swedish quirky romantic comedy drama TV series. Excellent
