Foreign Netflix thread

Meruem · 19/02/2021 22:34

This may be a dud thread that no one will respond to Grin but I’ve read so many of the Netflix recommendation threads and the things recommended are all the usual, always in English. So I wanted to start a thread for the appreciation, and recommendation, of their many other language offerings!

So my recent shows are:
The barrier - Spanish dystopian drama about a killer virus, maybe a bit close to our current situation! But I enjoyed it.
Alice in borderland - a Japanese show about people trapped in an alternate Tokyo and forced to play killer games
Revenge - Thai drama which is brutal. A woman and her daughter suffer a terrible fate at the hands of 7 men, so not one to watch if you would find that kind of thing triggering. But the revenge part is very satisfying. It’s also a bit crazy and downright strange in parts but total escapism.

I’m always on the lookout for new foreign shows to watch so would love any recommendations.

I enjoyed Love and Anarchy too, I thought it was very original with some really, really funny bits.

@Andante57

LynetteScavo - is Parasite very depressing? - I try to avoid depressing films - or does it have like in Crash Landing mixing up dark or serious scenes with comedy?
It's not depressing at all. It's funny, and thought provoking. It's one of the few films DH and I have discussed the next day.

Lynette - thank you, we’ll give it a go.

Both Spanish

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2021 11:07

@Wrongsideofhistorymyarse

I loved Unauthorized Living
So good isn’t it

I have such a crush on Nemo and loathe Mario and find him good looking in turns

Andante57 · 19/03/2021 11:10

Scribbling you are lucky to have most of Crash Landing ahead of you.
It’s like still having Wuthering Heights or Rebecca to look forward to.
The hair tying/flirting scene is my favourite scene from any film/series/drama ever.

JackieTheFart · 19/03/2021 11:18

Just marking my place as all the ones I would recommend have been mentioned.

I watched Hold Your Breath the other day - how unfair is it that Olga Kurylenko is SO beautiful but also SO clever?! I read her IMDB page and it just casually says she learned Turkish for a film role and that she speaks five languages! Totally jelly bags.

ScribblingPixie · 19/03/2021 11:19

Brilliant, Andante. And the North Korean village is already fascinating.

JorisBonson · 19/03/2021 11:22

The 3% - yet another dystopian future one!

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/03/2021 11:25

@Sowingbees The Barrier is really good for age 14 plus.

Lollyneenah · 19/03/2021 11:46

Loved Alice in borderland. Really excellent

Iceskatingfan · 19/03/2021 11:48

Firstly to @Andante57 definitely watch Paradite, I had exactly the same concerns as you but for the most part it’s actually almost like a comedy horror mix, and has amazing metaphors and messages throughout, I found it deeply thought provoking as well as laugh out loud funny and am so glad I watched it, I feel it’s the best film I’ve seen in years and I’m not really the sort of person to watch arty independent foreign movies as a rule, prefer huge Hollywood rom-com blockbusters!

LOVED the 3 percent on Netflix (Brazilian Portuguese, can be dubbed to English if preferred) dystopian futuristic sci fi type feel.
I also really enjoyed Osmosis (French) in a similar vein.
I also loved Home for Christmas (Norwegian) rom-com series
And am planning to watch The Hook-Up plan (French), supposed to be a Notting Hill type vibe rom com.
Am planning to watch Love Alarm (Korean) rom com series about an app that alerts you if someone you love is nearby or something?
Actually a lot of the Korean rom coms look right up my street.
Also planing to see Namaste Wahala (Hindi) a rom com about an interracial Nigerian I think and Indian couple and how their families react (supposed to be Bollywood and Nollywood come together)
I’d love to see more Bollywood movies available on Netflix, I’m a sucker for these!
My mum loved Unorthodox (Yiddish set in Germany) based on a true story about a strict Jewish girl in Germany I think?
Dark sounds right up my street, I’ll have to check it out. Lupin also sounds good to me.

Please recommend me other dystopian/sci fi/time travel type shows I may have missed due to being in other languages (pretty sure I’ve seen all the English shows in that vibe!)

Nonbio46 · 19/03/2021 12:05

I know you have said Netflix but we love Inspector Montalbano which was on the BBC iplayer last time I looked. Also, The Bridge is brilliant but I’m not sure where you can stream it at the minute. x

Rua13 · 20/03/2021 08:08

Yes to Unorthodox,Borgen, Call my Agent and somebody else mentioned Ethos which is set n Istanbul.
A guilty pleasure was Bollywood Wives and Indian matchmaker.
I can't travel so watching foreign movies and series's.
