What will make me cry?

Doyoumind · 15/02/2021 20:25

I feel like I need a really good cry to get it out my system.

I am not a crier. I really dislike films or programmes designed to make you cry. I'm more emotional about true stories than fictional stories

What can I watch?

If you want true and not fiction, what about the david Attenborough one? I felt pretty bleak afterwards...

BertieBotts · 15/02/2021 20:28

This. It's only 8 minutes long. It's an artist talking about a song that she wrote but it absolutely floored me.

DIY SOS is on tonight. Always guaranteed to make you blub.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 15/02/2021 20:29

The mumsnet classics thread about the lady who fosters a drug dependent baby. Christ. If that doesn’t dry you out you are made of stone!

KitKat1985 · 15/02/2021 20:29

One Born Every Minute is quite good as a tear jerker I find.

Totally this
Lozza70 · 15/02/2021 20:32

It’s a Sin. Properly ugly sobbing.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2021 20:32

In half an hour-Long Lost Family. And I am really not a crier, but somehow this gets me.

Oh and any YouTube videos of lost pets being reunited with their owners after months!

CherryPicker1 · 15/02/2021 20:33

The Disappearance of Shannon Matthews. Especially episode 2, wherein they hint at, but clearly cannot spell out, what that child’s life was like on a day to day basis. And her poor little best friend at school.
They haven’t seen each other since.

Schindler’s list left me shaken for a good while afterwards - obviously true but dramatised rather than a documentary.
it’s a shame Liam neeson has since revealed himself as a bit of a cock

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2021 20:36

The Shannon Matthews documentary gave me the rage. But not tears, wasn't it absolutely fascinating though?

Doyoumind · 15/02/2021 20:38

DIY SOS and Long Lost Family belong to the programmes designed to make you cry category and I am too heartless for them to have a meaningful effect.

Already watched It's a Sin.

Back in the day One Born Every Minute would work but I'm not sure even that would do now.

You should have said you were cynical that makes a difference. Grin
EwwSprouts · 15/02/2021 20:45

A Monster Calls film. Not sci-fi, not soppy. Powerful, voice of Liam Neeson.

RunningFromInsanity · 15/02/2021 20:45

purpleme12 · 15/02/2021 20:46

Agree, A Monster Calls

RosesAndHellebores · 15/02/2021 20:47

Bridget Jones and The Sound of Music does it for me!

doodleygirl · 15/02/2021 20:47

I watched Marley and Me yesterday with my elderly dog. I won’t need a good cry for about 2 years

LiveintheNow · 15/02/2021 20:50

Lion, left me unable to speak at the end

picklemewalnuts · 15/02/2021 20:50

Christmas adverts. Especially the loneliness charity one about a dog.

Doyoumind · 15/02/2021 20:51

Yes I am very cynical!

Marley & Me is definitely on the list of films I will not watch.

Sorry, I'm not making this easy.

I've considered A Monster Calls before. Maybe I'll give it a go.

But that presumably would come under 'designed to make you cry'. Sad
picklemewalnuts · 15/02/2021 20:58

Yeah, but that dog one isn't at all Saccharine. It's bloody traumatic.

PainterInPeril · 15/02/2021 20:59

Reverse psychology: Maybe try a comedy instead. It will make you relax which while making you laugh, may make it easier to cry. That may be just me, though!

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2021 21:00

I couldn't believe what I was watching when I first saw it, not very Happy Christmas like the cuddly JL dragon!

Yep. An excellent film and not mawkish in any way.

sparklingbrook yes I know what you mean, very anger-inducing (her mother and that disgusting creep of a boyfriend) but the thing that struck me most about it was the loss of friendship and support that both her and her best friend had.

The best friend said that they had bonded because they suffered at school because they weren't like the other kids (I took that to mean they were bullied) and they were both putting up with stuff at home.

The young woman who was Shannon Matthews' best friend just looked broken, somehow. I don't want to say too much in case she ever reads this but I felt desperately sorry for her .. her loss was palpable.

We can at least hope that Shannon was fostered then adopted by a loving family .. her friend never escaped. I'm sorry that sounds weird; I'm not explaining myself well. I don't mean to imply that Shannon's life or ordeal was somehow less than her BF's. It's just the outcome was unknown so we could hope. But for the BF, there seemed little hope.
