I never bothered with any dressing up for DS for world book day - happy to buy books for him at any time. Could all the kids go as a child from the famous five or something and just dress in their normal clothes?

OrdinaryLife · 28/02/2021 19:43

@prokupatuscrakedatus Sev looks like he was a beautiful cat. I'm sorry for your loss Sad

DS1 has ASD so refused to dress up ever so world book day was always own clothes for him. DS2 on the other hand, always wanted me to make elaborate costumes usually at short notice!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 28/02/2021 20:12

OrdinaryLife
He was from the litter of a rescue cat. His sister lives with NDN downstairs.

DS never dressed up for anything either. The discussions were memorable.

MissConductUS · 28/02/2021 21:13

That sounds like a lovely calm day @starpatch. When my DS was little he was mad for train watching. There's a big railroad repair depot near us and once a year they open it up for tours and give out little souvenirs to the kids. That was the highlight of his summer that year.

Are you still job hunting? Also, please post a picture of the guinea pigs if you care to. We could use a change of pace from cats and dogs.

And speaking of cats, it seems several of us have similar looking feline overlords friends. Here's mine.

Loving all the cat pictures!
Afraid I don’t have any dull news today, sorry

soddingkitten · 28/02/2021 21:36

Our online shopping included Warburton’s thin raisin and cinnamon bagels as a substitution. They are far too moreish. Sainsburys also substituted the wine I ordered for a more expensive bottle, so the difference will refunded. 🙌

Nydj · 28/02/2021 22:34

I forgot to say that we did manage to make two batches of @MissConductUS’s patented brownies and that we chucked in chopped up curly wurlys into the second batch. I’m not sure if the curly wurlys have made much of a difference but that batch is in the freezer so will have to wait a while for proper feedback from DS on the this.

DoctorTwo · 28/02/2021 23:14

Went to Aldi today and, on a whim, bought a pack of sticky toffee tarts. I have eaten all 4 of them and feel quite full. They're delicious.

DD3 is having a weekend of immense tech frustration. First from Apple, then from her phone carrier trying to buy a new (reconditioned) phone, then paypal, and all today The Common App (she's applying to transfer university and has nine universities on her list).

DD3's problems require a lot of hand holding from me, and tech help from DS. We have two more applications to complete (essays and personal statements she has written and which I have proofread to death over the last few weeks have to be saved as pdfs and then uploaded)..

I spent Saturday helping DS clear junk and assorted Christmas debris out of his apartment and clean his stovetop. He hasn't cleaned up for a while and his lovely GF is returning from a long visit to her parents within the next two weeks. I left him to clean out his own microwave.

mathanxiety · 01/03/2021 03:20

Just realised I put a cashmere sweater in the regular lukewarm wash. It seems to have come out fine - happily I recognised it and didn't throw it into the dryer. It's on the rack and hopefully my efforts to reshape it will bear fruit.

I'm going to make a cup of pomegranate flavoured green tea and probably chamomile for DD3.

World Book Day is on Thursday this week. My DC love it and discussion about who they will be has gone on for weeks. I will have a Clare Balding character, a ‘Molly Moon’ (little known 90s series) and a school girl from the Chalet School. Two out of three can wear their own clothes.

All the children have been invited to dress up whether at home or at school. All the town primary schools are asking pupils to make posters advertising their favourite book and pop it in the window for people to spot on their daily walk. And we will have a hot chocolate and biscuit story time, both in and out of school!

I’m quite looking forward to it though I don’t know who to dress up as!

Therainisback · 01/03/2021 07:41

It was frosty here in the night, the rooves are white & sparkly.
I typed a long post yesterday about my day but it's not here. Never mind it was quite dullGrin

One clean shirt for each workday (mon-sat) and he changed into a fresh shirt when he came home, and 1 sunday and 1 because he regularly did things like car maintenance etc. in his 'good' shirts and DM would make him change before he went down to the pup.

We still use cotton hankies, but I'm blowed if I'm ironing them. They get tumbled and folded.

I had to have a Zoom meeting for work which was highly unusual (I normally escape such things) and also highly unwelcome. It was, let's say, an interesting exercise in trying to maintain a neutral facial expression for 2.5 hours when my my every instinct was crying out to make it perfectly obvious how tedious I found everything and everybody in the meeting.

You can see that I'm not cut out for the fine art of office politicking.

Sunbird24 · 01/03/2021 13:45

Hilda I’m always very glad we don’t have cameras on for Zoom calls where I work! I’m usually not paying attention multi-tasking...

soddingkitten · 01/03/2021 13:58

I was in a Zoom meeting a few weeks ago which made me incredibly angry. For once I found the camera helpful, as I was able to check my poker face minute by minute. As soon as my boss and I signed out we met (2m apart) by the tea point to let it all out. There was a lot of swearing.

I’m wearing a smartish top today but scruffy joggers and felted wool slippers on my lower half. I said to DH earlier that I felt underdressed for work and it was affecting my work mojo, even though no one else can see.

We are all fed up of being cold today. Even DS2 has cracked and taken a heater up to his room.

rabbitholes · 01/03/2021 14:04

There's a pigeon sitting on the bird bath.

Squirrel26 · 01/03/2021 14:12

One of my friends got an enquiry from school about their child as they were ‘rolling their eyes a lot on Zoom, are they OK?’

I think this is an entirely appropriate response to having to be on Zoom, and am glad that my work don’t report to my mum about my Zoom demeanour.

MissConductUS · 01/03/2021 14:17

Happy first day of meteorological spring everyone! And the vernal equinox is a mere 20 days away.

@Nydj, I'm so pleased that the Death by Chocolate brownies continue to be such a favorite at your house. I had to google curly wurlys - they sound really good!

I was pretty shattered after my 3.5-hour Zoom meeting on Friday. And turning off my camera wasn't an option, unfortunately.

DS woke up on Sunday complaining that he couldn't hear out of one ear, so I ran him up to an urgent care office where they did an ear wax extraction. He was fine afterward. The same thing happened to his sister last summer, so it must run in the family. And DH took his mum for her second covid jab last night, so she's now fully immunized. Or she will be two weeks or so.

math, I remember the Common App! It did have its challenges but was still a lot easier than filling out separate applications for each college. Some still require a unique essay.

I am in awe of anyone who manages to look engaged and interested in zoom meetings - try as I might, my mind just wanders. This then means that I can’t say anything because of the worry that I will reveal myself by asking about something important that was said while I was zoned out.

I have emailed the venue we had booked to stay in for a few days mid-May and asked if it would be possible to move the dates to the end of May when they might actually be allowed to be open.

Oh in even more dull news, I tried some celeriac today. It tasted of water so I have chopped a bit of it up in matchsticks and added a dressing of mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, salt and pepper - it has a fancy name but I can’t remember. I am hoping the dressing will help add flavour.

rabbitholes · 01/03/2021 16:06

The pigeon is now on the patio. Can you handle the excitement that is my life?

MissConductUS · 01/03/2021 16:15

Welcome, @rabbitholes, and thanks for sharing your avian news. So far your excitement level is tolerable, so carry on.

I had a 45-minute Zoom call this morning that was tolerable. I have a Logitech headset now for Zoom calls as my Airpods weren't lasting for long meetings. I discovered on Friday that the headset hurts my ears if left on for more than an hour, which was a challenge in a four hour Zoom call.

Brrrr, it’s so chilly today compared to the weekend! We have had a morning of generally milling about and an afternoon of education. Zoom yoga this morning for me (DS joined me under my blanket for shavasana at the end and then said hello to everyone after the class had finished), then a quick trip to pick up the supermarket shop, then we fit in some phonics, maths and pencil control after lunch. He’s decided he wants to have The Storm Whale as his WBD book which suits me as it basically involves a stripy top and a beanie, but we have started making a little papier-mâché whale which was fun this morning. We’ve then been for a quick bit of pedalling practice up the track and back, and now we’ve got Toy Story 2 on (again...).

Sunbird24 · 01/03/2021 16:24

@Nydj is it a rémoulade? Hope it improves on the flavour!

I have grown a boil in my left earlobe, up where my second piercing would be if I hadn’t let it close up more than 29 years ago. It throbs, especially with the headset on for work calls!

Sunbird24 · 01/03/2021 16:24

Not 29 years, 20...
