Anthea Turner - fat shaming and disablist (covid)

So Anthea Turner has felt the wrath of pretty much everyone for her recent Tweet. Very silly of her, being someone in the public eye.

I felt she was trying to make a valid point but failed terribly with that offensive cartoon. And what did she mean with the caption "Go for it"?

She was trying to open a debate as in "go for it", tell me what you think? I don't want to offend anyone, but I think there was a valid point in the cartoon... we choose what risks we take everyday with our health.

Babymamaroon · 12/02/2021 20:01

Although it wasn't particularly pleasant, she was sharing her opinion. It's a shame she didn't respond with so fucking what? I am beyond sick of so much hand-wringing!! Get over it!!!

Sportsnight · 12/02/2021 20:04

Why are we all acting like it matters what Anthea Turner thinks?

Aah, ok. That makes sense.

I agree she was trying to make a good point but the cartoon and it's stereotype did her no favours.

Which twat opened the portal to 1997 and released Anthea bloody Turner back into our lives?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/02/2021 20:06

She's got a point to be honest and I say that as an overweight person.

tabulahrasa · 12/02/2021 20:06

Bit of a juxtaposition with using your wedding to advertise chocolate though...

Maybe the point is that we don't need to shame people who don't wear a mask and we don't need to shame fat people either. Mayeb they are both taking the same risks to their health? Just a thought

Happytentoes · 12/02/2021 20:11

Stop digging Anthea!

I saw quite a few comments about this. It was a wierdly tacky thing to do as part of her wedding.

But that argument does relate back to people having a lack of self control (perhaps coupled with a lack of motivation to excercise). No chocolate advert is encouraging you to eat a whole box of chocolate in one go. But a little here and there can be enjoyed in moderation. Celebrities equally get stick if they heavily promote "clean eating" but get snapped by paparazzi eating a bar of chocolate.

The thing is, Anthea Turner and the z-listers like her need to do everything they can to remain in the public eye. They don't have talent to get them there.

It's absolutely bollocks that AT has looked after her body in order to protect the NHS, it's absolutely essential that she not become fat if she wants a media career, however minor and insignificant. She's female and 'old' for employment by TV/media standards - if she were fat as well, that would be it for her.

The best she can hope for is to keep her name current by any means. Slow handclap for her disingenuousness but, when you're a nonentity and you don't have anything else...

SandysMam · 12/02/2021 20:19

I agree to an extent and I am someone who is over weight. Covid has terrified some obese people but yet they are not equally as afraid of heart disease and diabetes because they are “slow” growers. But I also know it is not as simple as lose weight and it is certainly far more complex than being greedy and selfish. I think coming from super perky Anthea it is very patronising though, not sure she shares the same issues as someone who can’t afford healthy food, has no time to exercise due to working two low paid jobs, or who emotionally eats following childhood neglect.

NuniaBeeswax · 12/02/2021 20:23

Has she not got some chocolate to be shilling?

SquishySquirmy · 12/02/2021 20:24

Has anyone "genuinely tried to protect the NHS by looking after their bodies"?
I mean, I try to make healthyish decisions most of the time and I am in reasonable good health (partly due to good luck).
But I honestly don't do this for the NHS. Its for my own health and general feeling of wellbeing, and for vanity.

It has never crossed my mind when I drag myself out for a jog, or opt for just one doughnut, or eat an apple that I am doing it "for the NHS!" What a weird idea.

Are there really people out there whose sole motivation to be healthy is their deep love of the national health service???

guinnessguzzler · 12/02/2021 20:35

I do agree she is out of order here. However, I often feel quite sorry for her about the whole wedding / twirl fiasco. She was really just ahead of her time; the current approach to celebrity seems to be that selling off all aspects of your life is standard, but at the time she was absolutely vilified. It is a reminder of how much attitudes have changed. Not in a good way, in my opinion, but I do think it was harsh how much she lost over something that even a decade later would have been seen quite differently and now would probably just be expected.

guinnessguzzler · 12/02/2021 20:37

Sorry, not meaning to derail the thread but this is something I think about from time to time in our current celeb culture.

That bar she was shilling was just over 1.5 times the recommended portion size of chocolate...

You shouldn’t be ok with promoting unhealthy things, in such a money grabbing way and then going - oh but you weren’t supposed to finish the whole bar!!!

In moderation is pretty hard for people to do if one serving is already bigger than in moderation should be.

You don’t have to be finishing boxes of chocolate to end up obese btw.

It is strange when you put it like that. I think the point she was very badly trying to make is how much it is being shoved down our necks to protect the NHS by not going out, keeping apart and wearing a mask, when there are plenty of other things that many of us could and should be doing to achieve this.

I haven't looked into that scandal tbh, I only saw comments with one picture of her and her husband holding a small bar of chocolate each. Maybe that wasn't THE picture that caused the scandal. I was too young too notice when it actually happened.

goes to Google to look it up

My passion on disability comments on public platforms remains sincere. We are not here to make your fucking points for you, Anthea.

StillMedusa · 12/02/2021 20:51

An ICU nurse I know.. working with ventilated Covid patients said to my DD (her friend) last week that without exception, every patient they have is overweight..and most are severely overweight.. including people in their 30s and even younger. She said it has been the most shocking factor of the second wave.. it's not the CEV, or the diabetic (tho many are type 2)... its the fat people who are dying :(

If it doesn't give the UK the kick up the bum it needs to tackle obesity, nothing will.

FusionChefGeoff · 12/02/2021 21:03

Is the fat lady in a wheelchair or just sitting down??

zoemum2006 · 12/02/2021 21:04

This is what counts as debate these days. It's attention seeking cruelty and I am so utterly bored of it.

I feel like we're going backwards as a society.

Quit4me · 12/02/2021 21:05

She is almost 100% right.
Didn’t need to include the wheelchair (if that is what the cartoon is meant to depict), but apart from that, spot on.
I’m thrilled that some in the vaguely public eye has said something finally.
As a PP said, the OVERWHELMING majority of hospitalised covid patients are overweight.
Putting us very bluntly, people eating crap food and getting fat have contributed massively to us ALL having this soul destroying second lockdown.
For gods sake- you have had a year A YEAR to loose weight. Get a grip and some bloody will power and stop eating shit!
