Anthea Turner - fat shaming and disablist (covid)

So Anthea Turner has felt the wrath of pretty much everyone for her recent Tweet. Very silly of her, being someone in the public eye.

I felt she was trying to make a valid point but failed terribly with that offensive cartoon. And what did she mean with the caption "Go for it"?

"Putting us very bluntly, people eating crap food and getting fat have contributed massively to us ALL having this soul destroying second lockdown.
For gods sake- you have had a year A YEAR to loose weight. Get a grip and some bloody will power and stop eating shit!"

Putting it very bluntly, don't talk a load of shite.

AgeLikeWine · 12/02/2021 21:13

Turner could have made her point more tactfully, but she absolutely does have a point. In the vast majority of cases, obesity is a choice and I say that as someone who has been clinically obese myself, but is now a healthy weight, despite a couple of extra lockdown kilos.

GaryUnicorn · 12/02/2021 21:19

Her younger sister Wendy who died very young was disabled, and unable to exercise as a result. Lots of disabled people are overweight as they are inactive.

GaryUnicorn · 12/02/2021 21:21

Sorry, it was her sister Ruth who was disabled and died, aged 15.

jackieweaverhasauthority · 12/02/2021 21:26

Maybe the woman in the wheelchair is emotionally eating because her husband's a cheating bastard like Mr Turner

Tana433 · 12/02/2021 21:32

Apparently she is up for a job on a new tv channel so obviously trying to get noticed and stay relevant. Didnt like her in the 90s and dont like her now.

HideTanner · 12/02/2021 21:34

Oh trying to catch the eye of GB News so she's decided to be a bit Julia Hartley-Brewer? Tragic.

She should go back to fancy towel folding.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 12/02/2021 21:38

It really wasn't a very intelligent thing to do. Anyone with half a brain cell could have predicted the reaction. Silly woman.

FTMF30 · 12/02/2021 21:44

@FusionChefGeoff

Is the fat lady in a wheelchair or just sitting down??
I wondered the same.

KilljoysDutch · 12/02/2021 21:47

It seems quite anti mask to me like "why should I wear a mask when fat disabled people exist?"

It's shitty to be honest because obesity and disability are quite often comorbid due to the inability to exercise due to being disabled. I don't think there's really any point in being a cunt to people who haven't miraculously somehow lost vast amount of weight in under a year.

KilljoysDutch · 12/02/2021 21:48

Also for those wondering the full image shows an obese woman in an electric scooter with a mcdonalds bag.

LockdownLiv · 12/02/2021 21:56

The meme characterised someone who had become so fat they needed a mobility scooter while eating junk food from what I could see. There is nothing to say this character was disabled unless being overweight is now classed as being disabled?

I agree with the sentiment that expecting young healthy people to be locked down and wear masks to protect people who’s lifestyle choices make them high risk from Covid, and lots of other health issues, is pretty perverse. The meme is stupid as we aren’t just protecting fat people by wearing masks.

I think a lot of overweight people give up and find it ‘too hard’ to lose weight. If Covid hasn’t given them up a kick up the arse, nothing will.

thisyearsuckssofar · 12/02/2021 22:11

I see this as an anti-mask statement, dressed up as something else. She shared an anti-mask tweet recently too. Anthea's asking why lovely healthy folk should bother wearing masks, when complainers are often fat and unhealthy and therefore aren't helping themselves. Sure, there's a debate to be had, but not in this way. She just comes across as a selfish, uncompassionate person who doesn't care if she spreads the virus to others who may not be as fighting for as herself. It's the "I'm alright Jack" attitude.

FTMF30 · 12/02/2021 22:16

@thisyearsuckssofar What did the tweet say that she shared?

OP posts:
thisyearsuckssofar · 12/02/2021 22:23

It's in the newspaper article you shared. She called someone a goddess for saying that people won't be playing along with this madness (mask wearing) for much longer.

Gil55 · 12/02/2021 22:24

I totally agree with Anthea. Why doesn't the Government scare people into making healthier choices? So sick of hearing about 30 something people in hospital with Covid and "no underlying health conditions" only to see a picture of a clearly obese person. Isn't being obese a health condition?

Gwenhwyfar · 12/02/2021 22:25

@Tsubasa1

Maybe the point is that we don't need to shame people who don't wear a mask and we don't need to shame fat people either. Mayeb they are both taking the same risks to their health? Just a thought
No, because one of the behaviours has a stronger impact on other people.
goodwinter · 12/02/2021 22:26

@Quit4me

She is almost 100% right. Didn’t need to include the wheelchair (if that is what the cartoon is meant to depict), but apart from that, spot on. I’m thrilled that some in the vaguely public eye has said something finally. As a PP said, the OVERWHELMING majority of hospitalised covid patients are overweight. Putting us very bluntly, people eating crap food and getting fat have contributed massively to us ALL having this soul destroying second lockdown. For gods sake- you have had a year A YEAR to loose weight. Get a grip and some bloody will power and stop eating shit!
I understand obesity is a massive risk factor for lots of health issues, not just Covid.

However, in regards to your final paragraph: morbid obesity (as in the meme; the kind that puts you most at risk) is often a result of emotional overeating. The past year has been an incredibly stressful time, and healthy coping mechanisms have gone out of the window for many. The mental health of the nation is at an all-time low, and even prior to this, mental health was a hugely underfunded area. Trying to lose weight at a time like this if food is your primary coping mechanism, even if you know it's putting you at greater risk, is incredibly difficult. "Get a grip" is reductive and unhelpful.

RedcurrantPuff · 12/02/2021 22:28

@Sportsnight

Why are we all acting like it matters what Anthea Turner thinks?
Exactly this

The woman pictured on her wedding day chomping Flakes for money. Who gives a toss for her opinion ?

Okokokbear · 12/02/2021 22:32

I don't know what you think her valid point was, op? Unless you also agree with her awful views?

TheSockMonster · 12/02/2021 22:34

@SquishySquirmy Are there really people out there whose sole motivation to be healthy is their deep love of the national health service???

GrinGrinGrin

TatteredTiger · 12/02/2021 22:36

She's right though isn't she?

I know nobody is allowed an opinion these days that doesn't fit with the masses (cancel her immediately!!) but if you are fat (and I'm not talking a couple of stone) then you know the risks of remaining fat and increasing in size. You know you're likely to place a burden on the NHS. Doesn't really take AT to point this out though.

So it's fine to feel affronted and call her a 'fat shamer' whatever that is, but she's totally correct

What I found a bit weird was how she is very militantly stating her opinion and I can see why it's got people's backs up and the cartoon of a woman in a wheelchair was really misjudged but the message behind her words is fundamentally right

PandoraP · 12/02/2021 22:37

Horrible and Anthea Turner is such an irrelevant person isn’t she?

Okokokbear · 12/02/2021 22:38

The view on here a fucking disgusting. The view that people are fat frome their own poor choices and therfore shouldnt be treated with basic respect seems to be acceptable on here. But is suppose in a group of people who also don't seem to think trans people deserve basic rights om not surprised.

When I see people saying disgusting stuff like this one thing I'm thankful for is that I'm not you. I can't imagine having these views I actually pity people who think like this. So lacking in basic humanity I wonder what life must be like for people like this.
