Anthea Turner - fat shaming and disablist (covid)

FTMF30 · 12/02/2021 19:56

So Anthea Turner has felt the wrath of pretty much everyone for her recent Tweet. Very silly of her, being someone in the public eye.

I felt she was trying to make a valid point but failed terribly with that offensive cartoon. And what did she mean with the caption "Go for it"?

@FusionChefGeoff

Is the fat lady in a wheelchair or just sitting down??
I thought that too.

At the end of the day, she's not really wrong is she? We've all been destroying our economy, leaving our kids uneducated and missing our loved ones to save the lives of pensions. The same ones who choose to ignore the rules and travel abroad, ultimately resulting in their own demise.

FTMF30 · 12/02/2021 22:46

@Okokokbear

I don't know what you think her valid point was, op? Unless you also agree with her awful views?
I wholeheartedly agree with the part in the article where she says something along the lines of "if the government spent half the amount of money on health as they did in locking us up, we wouldn't be in this mess".

The communications campaigns from the government has been all about staying in, keeping apart and wearing masks. Very little about keeping fit and adopting/maintaining a healthy diet. The only hint of this was "allowing" us out for 1hr a day to excercise. It is amost like they are ushering us into poor physical and mental health.

We are being pit against each other and people froth at the mouths at the sight of someone not wearing a mask. It's pitiful that we've come to this.

I wear a mask when out by the way but I really can't get worked up about others not wearing one as I don't know their reasons. The same as I don't know the story behind someone's obesity, so I wouldn't tarnish all with the same brush. That's the problem with the picture - it portrays a negative stereotype.

Save the lives of pensions? I take it you mean the elderly. Like my mum and dad who stuck faithfully to the rules, but got covid from one of their carers. Or like my wheelchair bound friend who is putting on weight in lockdown because she is going out her mind with loneliness and boredom. Some of the people on this thread are appallingly callous.

wowier · 12/02/2021 22:51

I'm confused by this, I though covid was on average killing people in their 80s & vaccinations are prioritising the elderly?

FTMF30 · 12/02/2021 22:52

@thisyearsuckssofar Oh right, thanks. That part didn't load when I first read it.

I agree we need more education but obesity rates tend to be high in economically poorer areas so I'm not sure a pamphlet on eating better will do the trick.

wowier · 12/02/2021 22:57

We haven't just suffered high rates because of obesity, there are other factors too.

duckalemon · 12/02/2021 22:58

Is the woman whose wedding was sponsored by flake?

gottakeeponmovin · 12/02/2021 22:59

No, because one of the behaviours has a stronger impact on other people.

@Gwenhwyfar

Yes you are right. The obese person is at high risk of covid which is causing the entire population to shut down, kids having mental health issues and families going broke. So yes the obese one is having way more of an effect on me and mine than the one not wearing a mask who may pass on a mild sniffle

Downton57 · 12/02/2021 23:03

@gottakeeponmovin Eh? What the heck are you on about?

SophieGiroux · 12/02/2021 23:04

I agree with her and more should be said about the risks of being obese and dying from covid. Anytime anyone dares to say anything they are "fat shaming" Hmm
It would be interesting to know what percentage of the covid deaths were overweight/obese.

gottakeeponmovin · 12/02/2021 23:05

Even if she thinks it she was stupid to put it up there as she is in the public eye and could have gaged the reaction. Personally I think wearing a mask is the least of our problems and no big deal so I don't agree with the cartoon. I am however fed up of lockdown now and I do agree that once the older population is vaccinated we shouldn't have to stay at home because of peoples life choices. And yes, you do have a choice what you put in your mouth. Obesity is a self-made issue.

gottakeeponmovin · 12/02/2021 23:06

@Downton57 I was replying to @Gwenhwyfar but haven't got the hang of the bold font yet

TheSockMonster · 12/02/2021 23:07

I’m getting really fed up of fat shaming. Yes, we should absolutely lobby for obesity and weight loss to be better researched and resourced, but simply shaming people shifts the responsibility back onto the same people who already demonstrated they’re unable to lose weight and is therefore unlikely to bring any positive change.

IRL I know 2 very obese people. One is mid 50s and has always been overweight. She is a successful and highly educated woman who is a keen cook, constantly busy with various activities and the furthest person from lazy that I can imagine. I have no idea why she is so overweight, but it’s not because she’s lazy, selfish or stupid.

The second woman, early 40s, used to be very fit until she developed an autoimmune disorder. Now she’s severely disabled, uses a wheelchair and is on a constant cocktail of steroids, biologics (sp?) and painkillers. Her disability caused her weight gain.

Shaming these women will not reduce pressure on the NHS.

Onlinedilema · 12/02/2021 23:10

Well I wish someone would pay me to advertise chocolate, or anything for that matter.
Misses point of the thread.

KilljoysDutch · 12/02/2021 23:11

@gottakeeponmovin

Or might just pass on a disease that could kill you or you could pass to someone who ends up far more unwell than you. I do apologise for my fat disabled ass not instantly dissolving all of my excess lard at the first mention of a pandemic.

meeeeh · 12/02/2021 23:13

She seems obsessed with talking about her figure, pretty vain and shallow. Yes she does look great but she's also not had children. It is a lot easier to keep your figure when you haven't. That being said although having a baby has ruined my body I wouldn't change a thing

Downton57 · 12/02/2021 23:14

@gottakeeponmovin The bold fail isn't the problem. It's the content of your post. Obese people are no more likely than thin people to catch covid. People without masks are more likely to catch covid than people with masks. Ergo, your post makes no sense.

Heartofglass12345 · 12/02/2021 23:15

Fuck me I can't believe some of the comments on here.
I would love for some of you to say to anorexic people, you've had a year to put on weight, just eat for gods sake!!
I am obese, I emotionally eat and I know that, it's fucking hard and I hate myself.
I don't need people like you lot telling me I'm the reason the NHS is struggling. Tell the people who don't think covid is real, who keep breaking the rules and spreading it!

Quit4me · 12/02/2021 23:16

@Okokokbear

The view on here a fucking disgusting. The view that people are fat frome their own poor choices and therfore shouldnt be treated with basic respect seems to be acceptable on here. But is suppose in a group of people who also don't seem to think trans people deserve basic rights om not surprised.

When I see people saying disgusting stuff like this one thing I'm thankful for is that I'm not you. I can't imagine having these views I actually pity people who think like this. So lacking in basic humanity I wonder what life must be like for people like this.

It’s not ‘fucking disgusting’. What is disgusting is the way that whenever 70% of the UK population being overweight or obese is even discussed, it’s shut down as disgusting and fat shaming. This is a real problem that needs addressing and even more urgently due to covid. This should have been addressed last year in the summer and there should have been very more out there on how being obese WILL put you at far higher risk of being seriously ill in hospital from covid. We need to take more responsibility for our own actions. No hiding behind crappy excuses. No blaming others. For the vast majority of people, Only you control what goes into your mouth every day. Of course, some people have different factors such as health issues, can’t afford decent food. This is more complex to solve obviously. But the majority do not have these issues and could lose weight if motivated to do so.

And yet so many D listers stay thin by honking great quantities of gak up their hooters. Which is obviously totally healthy, and no doubt helps you crack on with compulsive cleaning, so it’s a total win. Crack on

hamstersarse · 12/02/2021 23:26

I saw that meme about 6 months ago

The sentiment behind it is something I agree with - ie. people who take no responsibility for their own health demanding that everyone else does.

Maybe obesity is complex, but it is not unfathomable. People could have done something about it in the past year. When I hear that lockdown is continuing because of the under 60's in ITU , who are mostly the obese, I can't help but be annoyed by that.

And that is because I do take deliberate steps to be healthy. I don't 'do what I want', I don't binge on shit, mainly because I don't want to be fat and unhealthy admittedly, but people imo need to understand that their lack of interest in their health is having a knock on effect on everyone else.

It would be fine if obese people said, you know what it's my choice to be unhealthy, crack on everyone else, but they don't. Like in the meme, they seem to expect everyone else to give up their lives for them. It's not really fair.

BeansOnToastWithCheese · 12/02/2021 23:29

Oh ffs. The cartoon she published is offensive and seems to wilfully misunderstand the root causes of obesity. Anyone who believes that most people with obesity would choose that over being thin is clearly either an absolute idiot, or seriously lacking in imagination. Possibly both.

I feel for Anthea Turner - having to stay thin and youthful in order to work must be an almost overwhelming pressure. But that doesn't mean she should be allowed to get away with fat-shaming other people. Just because she's chosen a career that (rightly or wrongly) demands she adhere to an almost unobtainable standard of youthfulness and beauty doesn't mean everyone else wants to too. She seems to lack the self-awareness to realise that.

tabulahrasa · 12/02/2021 23:30

“Not nearly the same. Really, please stop making an excuse - you can do something about it starting tomorrow”

Research shows that comments like that actually make people gain weight...
