@Squarepigeon

Imagine if they paid such close attention to Prince Andrew’s personal correspondence ...
Yes - that has gone strangely quiet

This.

Good for her! I'm glad.

Excellent news.

Unfortunately, the vile DM and MoS will now launch even further attacks on MM because that is what they do.

CorianderBee · 11/02/2021 20:10

Good, as a journalist we all know that people have a right to privacy under the IPSO code which includes private correspondence.

She may not have as much automatic right as most normal people but celebrities (which the RF essentially are) retain this right unless in the public interest. I don't really see how slamming their relationship with (possible) lies is public interest tbh.

See, THIS would be public interest if relevant to possible criminality.
RainingBatsAndFrogs · 11/02/2021 20:11

Good!

PaddingtonsSister · 11/02/2021 20:35

Entitled woman who wants all the perks of being in the media and not the drawbacks

BIWI · 11/02/2021 20:43

No.

Someone who doesn't want their private life written about in scum media.

BIWI · 11/02/2021 20:44

... and not quite sure why wanting to keep your private correspondence private would make anyone entitled.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 11/02/2021 20:46

I have a lot of sympathy for her, but i dont think this is right (though clearly the law disagrees with me Grin).

She wrote a letter to her dad. He shared it with the newspaper who published it. Surely her dad 'owns' the letter at the point he receives it and it's his to share? Even if not, he's the one at fault unless he was coerced or the letter was stolen.

derxa · 11/02/2021 20:48

@Susie477

Someone very important has obviously intervened and had words with the judiciary.
Exactly. Echoes of the Paul Burrell case.
Roussette · 11/02/2021 20:54

It was a personal and private letter and an invasion of her privacy. And the Judge ruled in her favour saying exactly this.

The next stage is to decide damages which she is giving to an anti-bullying charity, so the DM's money is going to that. Win win.

AuraofDora · 11/02/2021 20:55

@DisplayPurposesOnly
MM retains copyright of the letter, she is the author of the letter, it originated with her.
If you sent someone a book would they own the copyright? It that would remain with the author.

NativityDreaming · 11/02/2021 20:59

Good for her, I hope they have to pay her loads and a charity benefits from it.

murbblurb · 11/02/2021 20:59

I'm also puzzled. Isn't it her father who did something wrong? And while wrong, is it illegal?

Terrible family situation when a father won't meet a daughters spouse, or his grandchild.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 11/02/2021 21:00

Fair point but the copyright part of her case isnt resolved yet. I just think the privacy part is down to her dad.

No, the next stage will be hearing the rest of the claim in court.

The ownership is about to be debated in court because is she the author or the co-author?

It's beyond belief that a grubby rag publishes someone's private correspondence, how low can they stoop

Bearnecessity · 11/02/2021 21:42

Great....it was disgusting it was ever printed.

Not according to the news article I read. Evening Standard.

'The case is due to return to court on March 2 to decide the "next steps" for the case, including assessment of damages, any outstanding issues that must be decided at trial, and costs'
