I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

I think names come round again when they are great grandparents to the baby

So the parents name baby after their own grandparents SmileSmileSmile

Adolf will never be acceptable, neither will Myra. But what about Ian?
Ian Hislop Ian Botham Ian Astbury Ian McKellen Ian Woosnam Ian Brown Ian Curtis Ian Fleming Ian McCaskill Ian McShane

Plus many more, plus nearly everyone will also personally know more people called Ian than Myra or Adolf, so won't automatically associate the name with prominent serial killers or fascist dictators.

Sandra, Sheila, Paula, Brenda, Shirley
Gerald, Justin, Terrance

I was at school with a Granville. It seemed very old fashioned in the 1980s.
Does anyone know a Granville?

Some of these will definitely be back. Susan and Phyllis will be in the next wave of hipster names. Isn't Victoria Coren Mitchell's daughter called Barbara? That's a very similar vibe. And I can see Paul, Alan, Raymond making a re-entrance.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/02/2021 15:48

Isambard
Ebeneezer

Chastity
Charity

Names that haven't been revived since the Victorians and unlikely to be recycled within families, or names connected to thr more pious end of virtue. Or names where the meaning has changed around the name such as Gay, Dick or Fanny. Dick more likely to survive as the nickname for Richard, although Richard itself is a few years away from a revival cycle.

I'll know I'm well into middle age when the Sharon/ Tracey/ Gary generation cycles back in. The clichés of the names will fade and they'll loop round like Arthur/ Stanley and flowery girls' names of the early 20th Century. 20 years ago, those names on a clinic list would bave been elderly, now they'd be paediatrics.

Fairystory · 11/02/2021 15:49

Many of today's popular names were fashionable in the early 20th century. One name from that era that I haven't heard is Ada. Does anyone know an Ada?

JellyNellie · 11/02/2021 15:50

My DD is four and named Mary 🤦🏻‍♀️

SausageCrush · 11/02/2021 15:50

Fuckadoodledoooo · 11/02/2021 15:52

The baby in the bay next to me when I gave birth in January was called Dennis Confused

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/02/2021 16:01

The horror of seeing my own name in the same list as Adolf!

diddl · 11/02/2021 16:04

@flobberdobberrr

Genevieve
I think that that's a lovely name.

Has it ever really been "in fashion"?

Catwoman123 · 11/02/2021 16:05

So glad nobodies said my name. It's definitely a very 90s name but I like it. I dont know anyone below my age bracket with it.

Incyra · 11/02/2021 16:05

@JellyNellie

Incyra · 11/02/2021 16:07

marieantoinehairnet · 11/02/2021 16:07

Gertrude

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/02/2021 16:09

I don't think you can say. Ten years ago I would have said Arthur yet now they're everywhere. Even names like Nora and Hilda are starting to come back.

Seeline · 11/02/2021 16:11

I know a 19yo Katrina (Scottish) and a 16yo Genevieve (Evie)

Rockbird · 11/02/2021 16:12

I know a 9 year old Ada.

That aside, I wonder if some of you know anyone under the age of 18 Grin

Seeline · 11/02/2021 16:13

Some of these lists of names are like sitting in registration when I was at school in the 70s!
