What names do you think will never be revived?

I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

@BottegaBish

I know a baby Agnus
Is that a typo of Angus or a different spelling for Agnes?

My granddaughter is Gertrude - Gerty for short. Never say never!

diddl · 11/02/2021 15:04

@ColdemortReturns

Elaine, have we had that yet? In my mind it tied to the 70s like Sharon, Tracey, Denise, Claire...
Ooh, my name is one of those.

I was born in the 60s-my parents must have been ahead of the curveGrin

My early 20s son was at school with a girl with the same name!

It just goes to show how names live on through different tastes as I've been surprised to read a lot of the suggestions here!

I feel like the only names that definitely would never make a comeback are ones with very obvious connotations, like Dick and Fanny. For all I know, Adolf might still be popular in the countries where the name is traditionally from.

At the moment I'd say the most out-of-fashion names are those that were popular in the 50s & 60s, like Janice, Janet, Sue, Sharon, Julie, Keith, Roy, Tony, Alan etc etc. Absolutely nothing wrong with them but they're just not 'retro' enough to have their resurgence just yet.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 11/02/2021 15:15

I have met several child Margarets recently and also a Susan.

I agree with PPs that there will be a revival of plainer (though I think very pretty) names for girls - Jean, Kate, Mary, Anne.

MNOverinvestor · 11/02/2021 15:17

My guess is that Tracey will come back into fashion, possibly already is in Dalston thanks to Tracey Emin. With strong consonant at the start, it’s also a nice-sounding name to my ears...

@Lifeinaonesie

Sherlock. I think it's a lovely name but you couldn't curse a child with "no shit" as a nickname.
But Sherlock was never a (first) name anyway. It's a surname. There might have been a handful of people named after the fictional detective over the years, but you can't revive something that was never a thing to start with.
Pawpawpaws · 11/02/2021 15:30

@Sarahplane

Adolf, nigel, norman, Brian, Gertrude, Fanny
Except Gertrude these were the exact names I was going to list, really can’t see any babies being born and called Adolf, Nigel or Norman in my lifetime!
YoniAndGuy · 11/02/2021 15:34

I'm not sure Sharon or Tracey will come back to be honest.

There are always some which just don't!

Top ten girls in the 1930s for example. The top tens from c 100 years or so ago are back in force, almost on the way out again. Elsie, Florence, Edith, Dorothy, Annie... and, um, Doris. That one never made it back!

Fuckadoodledoooo · 11/02/2021 15:36

Alan.

Terry.

Fairly confident Judas isn't going to make a comeback Smile

BarbaraofSeville · 11/02/2021 15:37

People use Joseph and Rose. What is so different about Myra that it can’t be used

Joseph and Rose are common classic names. You don't automatically think 'serial killer or fascist dictator' when you hear them, but can anyone think of any other prominent Myras or Adolfs?

Nice to see the predictable snobbery about Sharon, Tracy, Gary and Kevin is alive and well.

Wilhelmina

Fuckadoodledoooo · 11/02/2021 15:38

I love the name Myra

I have two girls and in my head I really wanted to use the name. But you know.

joystir59 · 11/02/2021 15:39

Adolf will never be acceptable, neither will Myra. But what about Ian?

BigPaperBag · 11/02/2021 15:39

I was amazed to hear that Trevor and Clive were still being used. DH saw an article about names and a couple of years ago there were 4 Clives and 13 Trevor’s born. I never thought those names would still be around.
