What names do you think will never be revived?

I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

Yes, Mary is classic. I really like it. A name that has been around for many centuries won't go anywhere.

LadyCatStark · 11/02/2021 16:14

@AtLeastThreeDrinks

I came to say Gary! I can't see David coming back either (baby Dave!). Even Christopher seems on the out
David is already coming back! DS had a friend who tried out Dave as a nickname when he was in year 2 😂.

I think Karen, Sharon, Donna, Tracy etc won’t come back.

@SausageCrush

Does anyone know a Dennis who's under 30?
Yes I know a 3 year old Dennis!

Shirley Nancy

Barbara is the name of Victoria Coran Mitchell and David Mitchell's little girl - 5 now

I know a 3yr old Nancy, and have heard of others
JimmyJabs · 11/02/2021 16:23

Dick and Fanny have never been proper given names, though. They are nicknames for Richard and Frances, both of which I have heard of children being called in recent years.

I can't see Maureen ever coming back into fashion, but then the quite similar-sounding Maud and Nora seem to be getting popular again, so who knows? Give it another 20 years and people could think it's "refreshing"!

work at a school and we have a Nancy, a Neville, a Colin, a Mungo, a Craig, a Hector and a Mortimer. Here's the big mind blow for you all though......my daughter's middle name is Gertrude!

Flipflopfoodle · 11/02/2021 16:24

Ps all under 13 as it's a junior school

HideTanner · 11/02/2021 16:28

David is one of the most timeless boys' names there is. Even if it's not super fashionable at the mo I'll bet it's never dropped out of the top 100.

Gatekeeper · 11/02/2021 16:31

Cuthbert

All these posters saying Dick and Fanny Grin...those aren't actual names as well you know...nowt wrong with Frances or Richard

Rudolph is probably not one likely to surface any time soon.

My great nan wanted my mum to name me Fanny....my maiden name was Hare Hmm
My great nan was named Fanny. Her maiden name was Cox and when she married she became Fanny Beaver. I wish I was joking.
MatildaStoker · 11/02/2021 16:35

Most names come back round again sooner or later.

Those names people are listing, like Gary, say, most of them will start sounding cool and edgy again once we’ve waited a few decades and Gary’s grandchildren start having their own babies.

The ones that will really struggle to make a comeback are ones where the meaning has changed substantially, names like Gay, Dick or Fanny.

183fredamarleymum · 11/02/2021 16:36

yes Freda is the english spelling of Freda I was called after my dad who was Fred.

VinylDetective · 11/02/2021 16:36

That’s the most incredible coincidence @Catra. My granny was Fanny Wilson and she, too, became Fanny Beaver when she married. What are the chances?

JimmyJabs · 11/02/2021 16:36

Also... has Adolf/Adolph ever been a popular name in the UK? It's like saying "ooh, nobody will ever call their kid Idi again".

You’re right there. David was ranked as the 56th most popular boys name in 2019 in England and Wales. Looks like it’s not been far away from that position in the name charts for the last 20 years.

I went to a North American run school where there was an Adolf - he was about 12 in the late 70s.
He pronounced it "Ay-dolf" though, not "Ah-dolf".

Adolf is probably the one you can be most certain about not regaining in popularity ever. I think it was once a common name.

Donald maybe?

Horace, Gilbert, Gertrude, Alan

Not come across anyone young called Dwayne, Darren, Keith, Kevin, Lorraine, Sharon, Karen, Carol, Leanne, Melanie, Lynne, in a long time
