What names do you think will never be revived?

I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

I don't know any Ians under 50, although I quite like it and think it could be due a comeback after being supplanted by Ewan/Euan.

Same for Sheila, very pretty name.

x2boys · 11/02/2021 14:36

Names do make a comeback ,when I was at school in the 80,s I had a friend who I thought had a terribly old fashioned name ,Grace and now you can't move for little Grace,s or Gracie's .

The youngest Gary I know is at least 40 but I can see it returning in another 10-15 years

A lot of the names mentioned on this thread are already returning

The ones that I struggle to imagine on a younger person are Nigel, Brenda, Pauline, Jason, Maureen, Phyllis but I'm sure in another 20 years they'll all be back!

JackieWeaver4PM · 11/02/2021 14:38

The hipsters have already revived a lot of these names. Even outside of hipsterdom I know young kevins, kenneths and Gladys. Have heard hector regularly for a good 15 years or so and I think Peter never really fell out of use completely.

Agree it'll be a while till we see a baby Adolf though.

Guineapigsarepigs · 11/02/2021 14:38

Roderick
You don't often hear Lee these days

MrsKoala · 11/02/2021 14:40

Hector was on my list for ds1 but H vetoed. Gertrude was too if he’d been a girl. I love Gerty or Rudy as abbreviations.

x2boys · 11/02/2021 14:41

Funnily enough @Swingometer I know a Jason ,who is about 14!🤣

SionnachRua · 11/02/2021 14:42

I think almost every name will come back. Sandra, Julie, Susan etc just need to get to the granny chic stage and then they'll trend again.

I can't imagine looking at a baby and calling her Gladys Grin But I'm sure it will happen again!

Personally I can only think of Dick, Fanny and Adolf as names that will stay buried. Even Isis will have a revival eventually.

Standrewsschool · 11/02/2021 14:42

@MrsKoala

I know someone who recently had a Humphrey, which I didn’t see coming back.

Names like Nigel, Graham and Clive seem so of their time that I can’t see them coming back, but then again names like Julian and Simon are of a similar type and I love them and Finlay is very popular round here.

Whoever said Frank - I know of a few under 5. Along with a couple of Agnes and Esme.

I think names are so interesting. Such a window into society.

Humphrey - due to Death in Paradise? Kris Marshall’s character was called Humphrey.

Edna

Clawdy · 11/02/2021 14:42

1920s names that don't sound pretty - Gladys, Bertha, Doris.
1950s names - Eunice, Janice, Jean, Shirley, Sandra, Lynne, Eileen, Beryl....nearly everyone I went to school with! Grin

fucknuckle · 11/02/2021 14:43

Paula/Pauline/Paulette
Maureen
Pamela
Carol

Lifeinaonesie · 11/02/2021 14:45

Sherlock. I think it's a lovely name but you couldn't curse a child with "no shit" as a nickname.

x2boys · 11/02/2021 14:46

I don't think Gladys is too bad ,but imagine giving birth to a beautiful baby girl and calling her Bertha 😲 or Derek for a boy .

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 11/02/2021 14:46

You are all so wrong about names. They will or have already been used by the next generations. Usually by the time they are a ‘grandparents’ name. Working in a school, I hear lots of these.
The only ones that won’t are ones that have other meanings like Fanny or Gay and names like Adolf.

TheDogsMother · 11/02/2021 14:49

@Soubriquet

Adolf I get but why is Myra so unusable

People use Joseph and Rose. What is so different about Myra that it can’t be used?

Might be associations with Myra Hindley.
Maireas · 11/02/2021 14:50

All names come back. Although I agree about Adolf.
In a St Trinians film (original) Joyce Grenfell goes undercover and they give her the name Chloe. She complains that it's old fashioned and wants to be called Mavis.
When I was young Elsie was old fashioned, but I teach a couple of them now.

Sarahplane · 11/02/2021 14:52

Adolf, nigel, norman, Brian, Gertrude, Fanny

KeeefBurtain · 11/02/2021 14:52

My dd(17) has Linda on the list for her future (hopefully not for another 15 years) daughter

Puffinhead · 11/02/2021 14:54

Michelle
Pauline
Paula

midsomermurderess · 11/02/2021 14:57

Jean will definitely come back. After the very feminine, rather frilly names it will feel fresh and crisp. And, what might I ask is wrong with Angus? Apart from names that have be become tainted, eg Myra, I think it's a fruitless task to say what names are forever out. In my youth, Archie would have been almost preposterous for a child.

AlexaPlayWhiteNoise · 11/02/2021 14:58

@Devlesko

Maud, Karen, Elsie, Adolph, Gertrude, Wayne, Tracy, Sharon, Kevin, Norman, Gladys, Margaret, Joan, Mabel, Clive, Cliff, Simon, Martin, Graham, Paula.
You can't move for little Elsie's round here! And Mabel's! Grin

Theres definitely more than one Maud, Edith and Agnes too. I know a baby Shirley.

NuniaBeeswax · 11/02/2021 14:59

It's going to be so weird in about 30 years time when 70s/80s names make their comeback and you have loads of wee Claires running about again.

Maireas · 11/02/2021 14:59

Those names will come back.
Everyone will be sick of Isabella, Oliver, Jack, Will, Esme etc.
