I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

I’ve not met a young Cecil but know of quite a few Cecile and Cecily (which was one of my favoured girls names). One of my ds middle name is Clement, which you don’t hear as a first name but I know of a couple of Clemency/Clementine.

There is a teenage Barbara at my niece's school, though she apparently moved there from Brazil, where it's possibly a more popular name.

Nigel won't be popular for a long, long time. Donald too, probably. Will probably circle back around eventually.

When dd1 was in Year 7 (age 11-12) there was a Keith and a Barry in her year.
Dd2 who is a Lucy is in Year 9 and she had a Peter and Susan in her Maths class last year. They only needed an Edmund and it would have been the full set of Pevensey children!

MrsGulDukat · 11/02/2021 19:34

I heard a mum calling for toddler called Patsy not so long ago. She was adorable and it totally fit her.

steppemum · 11/02/2021 19:35

Names are just so sujective, that you can never tell.

When I was a child anyone calling their baby Ethel, or Edith or Archie, or Arthur, or Stanley would have been laughed at. They were considered to be truly AWFUL names.

Now they are popular.

I am old enough to be on the cusp so I would never in a million years have used any of those for my kids, but it seems quite normal me now to meet kids named them.

All names will come round again, except the ones with long lasting associations, like, Adolf.
But even so, names which to one generation have huge associations, like Sharon, Tracy, Myra (as in Hindley) soon lose them one generation down the line

BringBiscuits · 11/02/2021 19:36

Think I heard the name Ian was dying out? I quite like it.

alexdgr8 · 11/02/2021 19:39

Myra, no never, for obvious reasons. it's an unusual name so stands out, unlike rose, etc.
gretchen, just for the sound of it. i thought it was an insulting word thrown at a woman, she's a right gretchen.
griselda, because of the canterbury tales, the old story of perfect wifely obedience, even when he beats her etc...

Lockdowntherabbithole · 11/02/2021 19:42

My DH is Gary... two years ago I went to a baby group and there was a baby Gary. I had to stop myself from laughing.

alexdgr8 · 11/02/2021 19:43

i predicted 2 years ago that patricia would make a comeback in uk. it's still big in other countries. due to an ex football man. and he named her after his late m.

Laura and Sarah will come back in a big way.

Hels20 · 11/02/2021 19:52

@DreamyDreamer333 what on earth is hideous about Laura and Sarah?????

wellthatsunusual · 11/02/2021 20:01

@MrsKoala

Names that were popular when I was at school which I haven’t heard on anyone under 30 are Gemma, Neil, Stuart, Stacey, Kerry, Lucy, Darren, Kelly, Melanie, Naomi, Natasha, Brendan, Gabby, Richard, Jim (loads of Jims then although I know plenty of younger James/Jamies now).
In a weird contrast, I don't know anyone over the age of 30 who is called Lucy. The oldest Lucy I know is 12.
Staffy1 · 11/02/2021 20:02

@IggyAce

Fanny Dick Derek Norma
Dick is short for Richard, so will probably be back. I would have said: Ethel Petronella Agatha

But so many horrors have been resurrected over the last decade that they will probably all be seen again.

When I was in school I knew 7 Lauras, 4 of them had sisters called Rebecca and 3 had sisters called Sarah. Our neighbours had 4 girls called Rebecca, Laura, Sarah and Sophie. There are names that people seem to put together. Like Rebecca and Rachel and Jessica and Jodie. I knew a few of those sister names too.

Staffy1 · 11/02/2021 20:10

Haven't heard of a Dorcas for a while, or Wilbur.
