What names do you think will never be revived?

I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

Those biblical names are great. Jezebel can only be said in a judgemental way, though.
Moses is good, though. Surely due for revival. Maybe not Herod.

RuthW · 11/02/2021 18:40

Apart from Dick and Fanny all the others I have heard of in the last ten years. I get to know quite a lot of baby names where I work. I'm surprised that people think some of them will never me back.

There are loads of Franks, Mauds, Mary's etc.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/02/2021 18:41

Gertrude
Herbert
Beryl
Bertram (sorry, Bertie Wooster)

But you never know. I used to think Mabel and Ethel were appalling names to saddle any poor little baby with (I connected them with wizened, whiskery old great-aunts) but even those have found favour with parents recently.

They all seem to come back eventually.

The only ‘safe’ names IMO - the ones that won’t date you or make anyone cringe a few decades later - are the classics.

10 years from now we will have Tracey, Sharon, Yvonne and Nigel, Brian and Kevin. 20 years it will be Chloe, Amy, Gemma and Thomas, Joshua, Luke. They all come back eventually

Ernest is back already. And Ernie.

KateF · 11/02/2021 18:59

For those saying Margaret, in my baby room we have two little Maggies! Also an Olive and a Michael. Other rooms have a David and a Ralph.

Minty82 · 11/02/2021 19:02

Yes, I know a 7-year-old Ernest, and a 10-year-old Norman. All the names you see on First World War memorials are back with a vengeance.

And biblical names like Simon, Paul, Peter, David, Andrew etc are never going to go away. They’ve been displaced by Old Testament Noah, Reuben, Isaac etc at the moment because current parents went to school with too many of them, but they’ll come round again.

Mindlesspuzzles · 11/02/2021 19:06

I'm sure Tracey will be revived , it is a pretty name imo.
Sharon on the other hand, no .

wellthatsunusual · 11/02/2021 19:08

At an event in my teenager's school last year (before lockdown, remember those days?) all the children participating were listed on the programme. It was more or less like reading the Bible. It was a sea of Leahs, Rebekahs, Rachels, Esthers and Lydias. And the boys all seemed to be called Joel, Timothy and Noah. Grin

Fiona2020 · 11/02/2021 19:10

My partner is insisting we use the middle name Alan if we have a boy as it’s a “family name” urgh ‘

@SleepingStandingUp

If have thought Ian but there was one near us in hospital when DS was a baby so he'd be 5 now.

Grenville?
Barbara? Youngest I know is 39

I believe I read David Mitchell and Victoria Coren have called their daughter Barbara, I think it's safe to say she's younger than 39!
Bandino · 11/02/2021 19:14

I think the following would struggle to catch on nowadays:
Cecil
Malcolm
Horace
Egbert
Algernon
Fanny
Ermintrude
Gaye

MrsKoala · 11/02/2021 19:24

Names that were popular when I was at school which I haven’t heard on anyone under 30 are Gemma, Neil, Stuart, Stacey, Kerry, Lucy, Darren, Kelly, Melanie, Naomi, Natasha, Brendan, Gabby, Richard, Jim (loads of Jims then although I know plenty of younger James/Jamies now).

PuttingOnMyParts · 11/02/2021 19:26

I can see Malcolm and Susan coming back fairly soon as hipster baby names. Also Garry but with two “r”s - I think the Scottish spelling - but not quite so soon.

Pamela still seems to be relatively popular in other countries but pronounced Pam-ela.

DD goes to school with a Jeff, which surprised me.
