I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

I heard the name “Bruce” being shouted in the park a few weeks ago.

@TheySeeHerRowling there was an Ian and an Iain in my primary school class. This was the 90s/2000s. I am in Scotland though and it’s a Scottish name.

Not rtfs, so sorry if it’s been said but I think Adolf is a banned name. Along with Satan and swear words etc

Gary is rather dreary name and quite common especially 40 years ago.

I thought Gertrude had become popular again as Gertie

As already pointed out Regina probably won’t be popular again

Was coming back to say Kenneth and Richard but see someone beat me too it. Norman and Victor are others (although H lobbied hard for Victor for our 2 boys).

My parents and their friends were born 40s and 50s and the majority of the men from London seem to be called John (both my dad and fil are Johns) and the scouse men seem to be predominantly called Kenny. There are a disproportionate number of Jeans too. Others are Gail, Carole, Janet, Marion, Gillian, Cheryl, Yvonne, Lynn, Elaine, Bernard, Derek, Ronald, Victor, Keith, Alan. Friends/relatives from the 60s are called Debbie, Jackie, Alison, Karen. 3 of these names are my kids middle names, although I don’t particularly like them, as they are named after relatives.

Names in my area are a bit out of sync with what I read on Mumsnet. I know loads of teenagers with names like Sarah, Emma, Rachel, Timothy, Jonathan, David, whereas I often see people say here that they don't know anyone under the age of 30 or so with those names.

I do know a primary aged Gary too. Although I don't know any Kevins, Brendas, Susans, Barbaras or other names associated with the Gary era.

Maireas · 11/02/2021 18:32

A few years ago I would have thought Wilfred was old fashioned, but it seems to be more in use, eg Boris Johnson's son, and David Tennant's. David Tennant also has a daughter called Doris, and these acting and media types are at the cutting edge of taste and style!

57 Ian's in 2019 and 20 Gary's in England and Wales

BogRollBOGOF · 11/02/2021 18:35

Methusalah is a very old name. Not popular for a while thiugh.

Jezebel never really caught on either.

Delilah seems to be catching on a bit better though. Her treacherous associations have probably faded with the decline in organised religion, but it is still a fairly well known story. It phonetically fits with current trends.

Pumpkinpied · 11/02/2021 18:36

Some of the names mentioned here are already quite popular. I know a couple of toddler Brians, which surprised me but names like Margaret, Mary and David are fairly common.
I named him before Trump arrived on the scene but DS1’s middle name is Donald and I know a couple of others too.

Craftycorvid · 11/02/2021 18:38

My late mum seemed to have a legion of friends all called Maureen or Doreen - not sure either is ever going to be on trend again. Also, the Earnests, Kenneths and Hildas.
