What names do you think will never be revived?

I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

@Soubriquet

Lisa!

I haven’t met a young Lisa. In fact I’ve ever known one who is my Aunt and she’s in her late 30’s early 40’s

I agree. I’m a 32 year old Lisa and I’ve never met one remotely near my age or younger.

The current fashion for names like Stanley and Elsie came around because they were “grandparent” names. Maybe as more grandparents are called Carol, Linda, Trevor, Kevin etc, those names will come back for babies too.

MirandaWestsNewBFF · 11/02/2021 16:52

I think the names that won’t come back will be names like Adolf and Myra that are associated specifically with really unpleasant individuals and don’t have strong other associations. Otherwise anything is possible.

@NuniaBeeswax

It's going to be so weird in about 30 years time when 70s/80s names make their comeback and you have loads of wee Claires running about again.
I’m a Claire and I’ve noticed that it’s become a popular middle name for babies, now that Rose, Mae, Grace etc seem to be passing their peak.

goldielockdown2 · 11/02/2021 16:59

I think Eglantine has had its day.

DinosApple · 11/02/2021 17:04

I know a young Clive, Marjorie, Ray and Frank. To me they are next door neighbour names.

My DM laughed when I said I liked the name Ada ten years ago.

I can't imagine Linda being as popular as it used to be.

In recent years I've taught at least one if not several of the following: Prudence, Helen, Edward, David, Peter and Lisa.

Kljnmw3459 · 11/02/2021 17:14

Adolf for sure.

Names like Norbert and prudence.

Heatherjayne1972 · 11/02/2021 17:14

There was a thread a while ago about someone wanting to call their child ‘Gaylord’
That’s probably not going to come back

I was at school with so many Lisa joannes Amanda/ mandy - clearly popular names in the early 1970’s
They’ll come around again
One day there will be a generation of grannies calked kylie Beyoncé Rihanna etc and they’ll be the ‘old lady named’

SymphonyofShadows · 11/02/2021 17:18

I know a reception age Gary and a Susie.

HideTanner · 11/02/2021 17:18

Susie is a lovely name

partyatthepalace · 11/02/2021 17:24

@HideTanner

Nearly all names come back. Gary will be to 2050 what Archie was to 2020.
Absolutely.

I can already see early 20th century names like Alma, Jean, Joan and Arnold coming back -

Bout 10 years the Peter and Janes and Bobbys and Janets will be here -

Gary will be back in 20 years along with Melanie, Tracy etc

They sound grim to us perhaps but can you imagine what someone would have thought 20-30 years ago if you told you that Elsie and Albert would be hugely popular..

Covert19 · 11/02/2021 17:24

I was musing about Isambard Kingdom Brunel (and what a very strange name he had) the other day - Isambard is a name that has likely gone for good. And Kingdom.

WhateverJohnnyMcNofriends · 11/02/2021 17:30

I can't see Alexa ever being popular again.

Riddikulussness · 11/02/2021 17:31

Lots of names used in the states that are dying out here. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gary comes back, led by them.
