@DrRamsesEmerson I’m so sorry to hear about your friends daughter- please please get her to contact BEAT- they have a youth phone line and chat rooms, and her local GP should be able to refer her to the nearest eating disorder clinic (I have just had my referral, have my assessment on Monday, am so nervous but I’m strong I can do this 🥴)

If you need any help please just ask - for self harm I would suggest camhs but tbh my step daughter has had self harm issues and they’ve been utter crap- if she focuses on the anorexia and gets a proper referral for diagnosis and treatment they can give her CBT or another therapy that will bypass going through camhs xx

DWPmisery1972 · 12/02/2021 15:07

BEAT can’t offer medical advice but are there to listen and can offer a lot of really great coping techniques (including the worry tree which I find really helpful) - its a fab place to start. Even if she needs to just talk to someone that will listen and understands what she’s going through Flowers

DrRamsesEmerson · 12/02/2021 15:12

Thanks so much for the information, @DWPmisery1972. I'll pass it on to her mum, who is out of her mind with worry.

All the very best for your assessment on Monday Flowers.

DWPmisery1972 · 12/02/2021 15:24

No problem @DrRamsesEmerson I think they can provide support for mum too if she needs to talk (so family of people who have EDs, in the chat rooms I believe.) they have got me through some really dark moments when I’ve phoned them when I’ve felt overwhelmed by it (it’s like the Samaritans But for eating disorders kind of, but they offer support beyond talking). And it doesn’t matter what age she is.

Thank you for your support, you can be my cheerleader! I’m bricking it and ironically I had to phone beat because during the assessment they take your height and weight info and that just sent me into a spiral - I’m such a silly arse sometimes.

Let me know how she gets on; EDs are a long thing to get out of, they creep back sometimes for some of us, but there is help out there even at the moment - there is someone on the other end of the phone. So much love to the wee one- I wish this stuff was around when I was a kid. Flowers

bakingcupcakes · 12/02/2021 15:31

@DWPmisery1972 I'll be a cheerleader for you on Monday too if you like! I hope it goes ok. I'm sure it will. One of the hardest parts is telling someone in the first place and you've already done that bit. Flowers

@AcornAutumn I've also stepped away from news and social media (apart from this thread) and I feel much better for it.

amicissimma · 12/02/2021 16:34

With all the talk of double masks I did a little research when I was in my local town today. (In general I couldn't care less what other people are doing with masks so I don't take notice.)

The vast majority of people stopped at a shop door and dug a crumpled, generally slightly grubby-looking surgical mask out of a pocket and shoved it on. On the way out: ripped off and stuffed back in a pocket.

There is sanity out there.

Iheartmysmart · 12/02/2021 16:59

I got absolutely ripped to shreds in one of ‘those’ threads for saying my mask only got washed if it was inadvertently left in my jeans pocket. I’m filthy scum apparently who will kill grannies and have a face full of spots. I have no fucks left to give.

bakingcupcakes · 12/02/2021 17:06

I've never washed any of my masks. I have a clean one every day for work but feel guilty about only wearing it for 4 hours so I reuse them for shopping etc until they're too dirty/I have too many in my pockets.

I saw a small child in work the other week. Think she was about 4. She had a mask on which she took off at one point. Honest to god the thing was a health hazard. It was full of snot and all sorts inside it. I couldn't believe it when her dad picked it up and put it back over her face. It was utterly grim. None of my reused/unwashed masks are as bad as that.

TabbyStar · 12/02/2021 17:37

I wash my mask when it starts to smell bad. I have the same philosophy for towels and bedding (I'm a bit better with clothes!) It is nice to have a washed one though!

CruCru · 12/02/2021 17:50

I must admit that I do wash my mask every day - mainly because I get bad skin if I don’t.

LadyCounterblast · 12/02/2021 17:56

I bought DH some bright pink masks. He does look festive.

I thought well, if we've got to do it, might as well cause a minor stir.

LadyCounterblast · 12/02/2021 17:57

Oh and they get chucked in with the gym kit for washing. No 'system' really.

2020BogOff · 12/02/2021 18:04

I washed my mask and now it stinks of fabric conditioner. Makes me feel quite nauseous now Sad

justasking111 · 12/02/2021 18:38

I've not bought a fabric mask my own germs halitosis revolt me. I'm the same with cloth hankies.

TheOrchidKiller · 12/02/2021 18:41

@Pleasedontdothat
Fingers crossed for your DH & you.

I wash my masks because my nose runs when I wear them (nice).

How would they propose enforcing double-masking? Would you have to peel back the top layer to reveal the underneath layer, to the man on the door at ASDA before he lets you in? I'd be tempted to do it very slowly & sexily, whilst humming The Stripper...

"Da-da da daahh, de da da daahh..."

DWPmisery1972 · 12/02/2021 19:28

Thank you @bakingcupcakes! Flowers 🧡

@TheOrchidKiller I really laughed @ ‘the sexy reveal’ 😂

justasking111 · 12/02/2021 19:38

Well ambulance left when paramedics arrived, Who waited for social services, who never turned up. Paramedics left. Two hours later she fell again activated her alarm. Neighbors rushed around again, ambulance again. I know she demands privacy so will not have carers, refuses to go to hospital, but two ambulances one paramedic vehicle added up to six hours today.

TheOrchidKiller · 12/02/2021 19:40

Well that's me ruined with a self-inflicted earworm of The Stripper! My earworms last for ages, I've had Homer Simpson singing Spiderpig for years.

But yes, sexy mask reveal is my plan. I might throw in waggling the top edge up & down my nose, like Eric Morecambe's specs. Phwoar!

Our headteacher has emailed to say there is no homework set for half term because the students, parents & teachers all need a break. I think he should be in charge of everything. (And I have pointed out to DS that this leaves him with spare time to get our tea ready!)

everythingbackbutyou · 12/02/2021 19:41

I am not sharing Dave.

MercyBooth · 12/02/2021 19:47

DH finally opened his Tonys Chocolonely dark chocolate mint candy cane bar. His verdict? "Yuk i think i will stick with mint Matchmakers"

DWPmisery1972 · 12/02/2021 19:49

@justasking111 I need to read back, what have I missed? Is a family member of yours not well? I’m sorry I’ve read past it, I hope everything is ok Flowers

NeedWineNow · 12/02/2021 20:06

No sorry, Dave is not for sharing - he's all mine

smallandimperfectlyformed · 12/02/2021 20:21

No DWPMisery1972 it's justasking111's elderly neighbour who has had some falls and her family live far away. I am sorry that she is of failing health but there is a lot of medical time being wasted by her refusing to go to hospital. I would be so frustrated if she was my mother and I was getting calls like this all the time, knowing she wasn't letting other people help her. There was a really sad thread on here a few weeks ago where the poor OP was expected to help her mother nurse her dying father in her parents home, meaning she would have had to have spent weeks away from her own children and she was trying to say no but being placed under extreme pressure. It made me think much more about people who are expected to look after parents who are elderly and all the health problems that incurs.

Buzzinwithbez · 12/02/2021 20:23

I suffer from migraine easily. I'm reluctant to chuck my face coverings in the machine in case the detergent triggers migraine while wearing trophy I my nose.
I've bought a scent free bar, but haven't got round to handwashing them so far.

Taswama · 12/02/2021 21:12

I have a face mask in my coat pocket but mostly just pull up my neck wrap.
DS has to wear a face mask for school and wears the same one all week and it will get washed in a trouser pocket at the weekend.
A colleague told me how she provided her daughter with five washed and ironed face masks for the week (when schools were still open) and I nodded along.
