@2020BogOff

I don't understand all the frothing from some of the teachers over in the other place. If they think schools will never be safe and kids won't suffer at all from online teaching then why don't we get rid of schools, replace online teaching with central specialised teachers that will do it all remotely and just have a few that will work individually 1-1 through any issues?

I bet they would soon start screaming about how that wouldn't work, not in the best interests of themselves as we wouldn't need as many teachers the children.

I'm amazed the government haven't yet caught on to the potential of this money saving scheme to be honest.
Mrsfrumble · 15/02/2021 09:27

I had a brief look at “that” thread, then nope-d the heck out. Respect to those on there fighting the good fight though. Was there any consensus on what would make schools “safe”? I’m confused as to how the rota system would work, as presumably you’d need to have keyworker and some vulnerable children in full time, for the same reasons as they are now (at Primary level anyway) And in some schools that’s already around half the children. So then split the remaining children into 2 groups, alternating one in and one at home, and you’ve still got 75% of the children in at any one time. Am I just misunderstanding or being a bit thick?

Bollss · 15/02/2021 09:41

They have no answers. That's up to the government apparently Grin quite what point they're trying to make I don't know. Except masks are apparently the answer.

mightbealittlebitmad · 15/02/2021 09:47

I'm getting incredibly stressed that the schools won't go back because people are going to beg to keep them closed due to "new variants"

I've just seen a prediction that we will be back in lockdown in a few months time. How is it in any way affordable? I won't be going back to work until April at the earliest, if we shut down the pubs etc again for the summer that's a whole load of lost revenue and taxes and a whole lot more furlough. When do we say enough is enough?

starfish88 · 15/02/2021 09:50

I do think the dementoring has changed forms. Last spring we were a fringe group who believed lockdown wouldn't solve all our problems and would bring problems of it's own. That's now a much more mainstream view so we aren't an isolated outpost anymore. But this thread has always been a place where people can discuss a range of views without nastiness. There are more threads where that is the case compared to last spring (I recommend the optimism thread) but I still keep coming back here because of this community and my gratitude to those of you who kept me sane last spring when I was so close to losing it.

I am so glad that DD is in school. I feel the despair of those trying to work and home school, and I feel immense sorrow for those children who need school as a safe haven too.

Those ‘teachers’ over there are not showing themselves in a positive light. It’s like all the stereotypes about teaching being for lazy fuckers who can’t get a proper job, who want endless fully paid holidays and don’t give a shit about pupils, all rolled into one thread.

Disclaimer: I know most teachers aren’t like that and many do an impossible job in difficult situations. My DD’s school have been amazing, but I suppose teachers in private schools are more focused as if they don’t do their jobs, parents will stop paying fees and school goes bankrupt. Unfortunately parents at state schools can’t use that carrot/stick.

Meinelieblingskatze · 15/02/2021 10:04

I don't know whether masks are the answer. Evidence is conflicting. My trust obviously does and expects us to wear surgical masks in all clinical areas. I feel safer tbh if uncomfortably sweaty. We have easy access to hand washing facilities, decent ventilation, teachers not so much. I feel for them. And it is absolutely the governments responsibility to find answers surely ? I think it's easy for people ensconced at home to moan about 'whingeing' teachers. If you were a middle aged teacher with underlying conditions like mild asthma etc I think you are entitled to feel apprehensive considering the government's record.

Meinelieblingskatze · 15/02/2021 10:08

@Worldgonecrazy are you prepared to return to your office in 10 days or so ?

Worldgonecrazy · 15/02/2021 10:14

Absolutely. Why would I not be? I also travel in on public transport and between lockdowns did my beat to support the local economy by shopping every lunchtime and going to local sandwich bars, cafes etc.

Despite all this dangerous living my family, including my elderly parents, have remained COVID free.

ISaySteadyOn · 15/02/2021 10:14

If DH were allowed, he'd be in his office so fast you couldn't see him for dust.

Worldgonecrazy · 15/02/2021 10:20

@ISaySteadyOn. Many of my work colleagues feel the same, we are all missing the office, the informal chats over a cup of tea, having a colleague instantly available to bounce ideas without having to second guess if they’re on another call, the whispered ‘boss was impressed’ and all those things that just don’t happen when you’re working from home.

There is a bonus when we get out of this mess that we will be able to work from home when it suits our personal needs so i am very much looking forward to a weather-dependent timetable of home working 😎

Iheartmysmart · 15/02/2021 10:21

I can’t wait to be allowed back in the office! Have to keep moving my furniture around every now and again to get a different view from my desk.

Another one who was out and about as much as possible whenever it was allowed. Train, tube, pubs, hotels and restaurants without so much as a sniffle.

Meinelieblingskatze · 15/02/2021 10:23

Lucky you remaining covid free. And I bet you know no one who's had it or only had it mildly ? That's what's informing your risk assessment.

ISaySteadyOn · 15/02/2021 10:25

Actually, I know two people who have had it. One being DH and the other a good friend. Both are keen to get back in their offices.

ISaySteadyOn · 15/02/2021 10:26

But equally neither of them would force anyone into an office against their will.

ISaySteadyOn · 15/02/2021 10:26

And neither had it mildly.

Worldgonecrazy · 15/02/2021 10:34

I know people who have had Covid. I know people who have lost their parents with Covid mentioned on the death certificate. I have also had to attend clinical settings several times over the past year.

My risk assessment is informed entirely from ONS figures and the Zoe app, which I will continue to use as my main source of information. I find propaganda and hyperbole to be of little rational use but of mild interest as ‘what makes people tick’ is something I find quite fascinating.

Meinelieblingskatze · 15/02/2021 10:36

Don't you think that hcps, teachers etc are missing that ? We can only be mask free when we are eating, we can't interact with relatives face to face anymore, everything is so much more complicated and time consuming. I Iong for a return to normal and we are getting there in terms of numbers and vaccination figures.
I think that teachers have seen so much damage done to the educational system over the last few years they are rightly sceptical about thecurrent government. Look at how teachers have seen the effects of austerity at first hand, vulnerable kids turning up at school hungry, having to buy food out of their own pockets, not enough text books, cuts to staffing levels etc

Some of the comments on that particular thread are extreme. Very extreme. Eg the poster saying schools should not return even when teachers have been vaccinated, because some children might be CEV and so teachers won't be able to keep them "safe". This would have been the case pre-covid though as well. If vaccinating teachers is not sufficient, then I am not sure what is. Hmm

Some of the posters do not show the profession in a great light, to say the least. Especially the one who told me my DH would have blood on his hands for being too relaxed about a return to school (he is a deputy head and wants to go back in March).

Worldgonecrazy · 15/02/2021 10:37

Someone shared an amazing recipe for ratatouille bake with goats cheese. Would anyone like the link? 😁😁😁😁😁😎🤪

110APiccadilly · 15/02/2021 10:42

I was going into an office and also interacting face to face with customers at work before I went on mat leave. I looked at the stats and I'm not likely to die of Covid. Also, I've had to face my own mortality before and I'm comfortable with knowing I will die one day; I don't want to lose a year of normal life in hopeless pursuit of immortality.

Iheartmysmart · 15/02/2021 10:44

I love cheese but really don’t like goats cheese! Do you think it would work with another type? I’ve got vegan DS here tonight and we’re having veggie pot pies with mushroom gravy and possibly mash if I can be bothered to peel some spuds.

Meinelieblingskatze · 15/02/2021 10:44

I've looked after many many patients with severe covid; held an ipad to a dying patient's ears as his family said good bye which was awful, looked after 3 critically ill patients simultaneously because we simply didn't have enough staff, searching for equipment endlessly because your unit had expanded over 5 wards, being horrendously hot and sweaty most of the time and not able to get a drink for hours at a time. Don't want a medal, it's my job, mostly love it but just hoping that we can at last get a lid on it !

Mrsfrumble · 15/02/2021 10:50

Surely the hypothetical middle aged teacher with underlying conditions will be vaccinated very soon? Just going by the people I know who are my age (early 40s) and have underlying conditions, most have either had their first dose, or have at least been invited / booked in.

Meinelieblingskatze · 15/02/2021 10:51

@110APiccadilly of course we are all going to die one day. Don't think it's about immortality Hmm You admit your risk is low but you are happy to take that risk. How magnanimous !
