If you just disappeared, what would you do and where would you go?

And is your answer just off the top of your head now, or have you thought about it before?

Over December and January I kept getting glimpses of a woman starting a new life. I started writing it down, in great detail, and wrote it in the first person.

Outer hebrides. I'd just walk along the beaches and look at the mountains all day long. Bliss.

DinosaurDiana · 07/02/2021 13:40

I’d buy a cliff top house in Cornwall, and walk the dogs I’d get in all weathers.

Needsmustnow · 07/02/2021 13:40

Yes, mine is by the sea too. Probably Northumberland.

Greece to run a taverna

Aahotep · 07/02/2021 13:41

I would go to Northumberland and walk on the beach and write a novel

GettingUntrapped · 07/02/2021 13:42

I'd spend a year or so traveling and working (not sure doing what) in the Caribbean, island hopping.

Needsmustnow · 07/02/2021 13:43

I spend far too much of time walking the beach and collecting sea glass. I think I live alone. Funny. I didn't expect there to be so many similarities.

@harridan50 would you tell us a bit more about your taverna.

Historic city. Somewhere like Durham.
I'd go and live out my 'real' me there.
Get a job in the cathedral bookshop and live in an old building near the palace green.

leavingtime · 07/02/2021 13:51

I'd buy a small stone cottage with a large garden in Devon, within walking distance of the sea.

I'd buy a small dog, go for lots of country and beach walks and plant fruit trees in the garden.

I'd also have a woodland area and a wildflower meadow area. I would read lots of books and take lots of photographs.

I'd buy organic food from local farm shops produced by local people.

TheQueef · 07/02/2021 13:53

Fireperson on a Greek island.
Already worked out and on standbyGrin

ClaraBean · 07/02/2021 13:55

Pack a bag. Get the cheapest flight out of the UK and just keep moving. Visit everywhere, do everything, see everything until I had enough peace in my soul to stop and call somewhere home.

SallyTimms · 07/02/2021 13:55

As in yotr dream or practically?

Fantasy wise it would be like a lot if other people's ideas. But if you are going on the practical side you would want to dissappear somewhere with a transient population, cheap digs and low cost livi g to eek out an existence without leaving a credit file or electronic trail.

Needsmustnow · 07/02/2021 14:01

As in yotr dream or practically?

Probably a bit of both, either a fantasy or what I would do if I was brave enough or didn't have the ties I currently have.

I think you're right @SallyTimms about it having to be a pretty meagre hand-to-mouth existence to not be tracked down. Probably dangerous as a woman. What could you do with NI or bank account?

I'd move to an igloo in Alaska. You know, just for a change of scene.

Brakebackcyclebot · 07/02/2021 14:10

Australia. A house near the beach near Sydney or Brisbane. Lots of sun, space, dog, a pool. Loads of friends, long walks, beaches, sea, sand

TheQueef · 07/02/2021 14:11

I can't say which island of you will all be wanting it but...
Firperson required to sit on the hill and watch for smoke.
Comes with own accommodation, salary funded by donations from local business and at least two meals per day at a selection of eateries.
Three months off at Christmas clinches it!

Has my name all over it Grin

bellropes · 07/02/2021 14:12

I'd go to the woodland, dig out a hollow, climb into it, cover myself with branches and leaves and sleep an everlasting sleep.

Eckhart · 07/02/2021 14:13

I'm not quite sure whether to picture you as Stig of the Dump, or a bear.
Sparklingbrook · 07/02/2021 14:14

Buy a house overlooking San Francisco bay. Spend my time sitting on the balcony drinking wine.

Needsmustnow · 07/02/2021 14:17

Reminds me of a wonderful radio 4 programme I listened to a few years ago about this kind of fire-watching role. Just live in a hut on tall stilts during fire season. Sounded a bit too lonely even for me, but it was lovely listening to the young man talk about his days.

I have day dreams about this... winning the lottery, get a pony, a big dog and start walking...
I don't want to go somewhere specific more like going from place to place meeting people, exchanging stories and writing them down. Then move on.
I will probably find eventually my place to settle, but I don't know where yet. I love the sea and mountains equally.

TheQueef · 07/02/2021 14:20

Imagine it.... No Muuuuum or Mam, no crashes and bangs to investigate no being patted or stroked!
My DC are grown up and I still hear it.

alanpartridgefromtheoasthouse · 07/02/2021 15:18

Really where I most want to disappear to is Edinburgh. In normal times I go regularly for work and I just love everything about it. The people, the architecture, the beaches and hills within easy reach, the pubs! DH would never up sticks 400 miles so it's a pipe dream. Every time I visit I have this almost overwhelming feeling that I should be living there. Like somewhere in a parallel universe there is a version of me who's happily built a life there. I've cried on the plane home more than once! If (god forbid) my marriage failed and I had to start again, that's where I'd go in a heartbeat.

Milomonster · 07/02/2021 15:37

Japan. Only Japan. I’d explore every single island over 12-18 months (assuming I want to disappear for a finite amount of time).

Nandakanda · 07/02/2021 15:47

By train to Tallinn, then on to St Petersburg, down to Moscow, then all the way over to Uzbekistan - Kyrgyzstan area. Spend a month or so there, then into Western China for an amble over to Shanghai, boat to Korea, then ferry over to Japan where I would stay. Also want to walk the 100 temples of Shikoku.

All by train or ship.
