If you just disappeared, what would you do and where would you go?

And is your answer just off the top of your head now, or have you thought about it before?

Over December and January I kept getting glimpses of a woman starting a new life. I started writing it down, in great detail, and wrote it in the first person.

As a very depressed teenager my fantasy was that if life ever got too much I'd disappear off to India and that would somehow solve everything. No idea why I'm plumped for India - I guess it seemed so different and far away.

Somewhere hot, for starters 🌞.
My own place, with a big bathroom with a roll top bath and traditional tiles of the country I’d be living in.
A balcony that can be accessed by the master bedroom, sat there with a glass of something in the evenings, with fluffy white dressing gown on in the mornings with freshly squeezed orange juice and croissants...
Plenty of books. And a dog, definitely.

My own allotment that I could grow literally anything on, and sell on the market.
Away from the crowds, but near enough to amenities.
No neighbours looking over me, or being too near.
Walking along the promenade or the sea, wearing a floaty dress, hat and sandals.

Donegal, buy a horse and dog, walks on the beach, nights by the peat fire, read lots of books. 😁

strawberriesontheNeva · 07/02/2021 21:32

I'd love a secluded farm house in the south of France/ Spain.

My own chickens and organic veg.
Near the coast.

ilovebagpuss · 07/02/2021 22:19

Southern France somewhere near the coast maybe half an hour away.
Ramshackle house I had plenty of money to enjoy doing up.
Endless sun soaked afternoons just sitting in the shade drinking wine and eating the best cheese and olives.
This is actually a retirement dream too but I would take DH in real life.
Also some chickens ex battery and a couple of goats.

shouldreallynamechangemore · 07/02/2021 22:22

I would keep moving like The Littlest Hobo

Gcnq · 07/02/2021 22:26

How could you afford to disappear though?
Most people need to show up for work.

DipSwimSwoosh · 07/02/2021 22:58

France.
South of France by the turquoise sea, walking distance to a quiet inlet I could swim in every day.
I'd speak French, ride a bike, drink red wine, eat fresh tomatoes and peaches and fish.
I'd listen to classical music and read books and get so much fresh air and exercise. I'd smile all the time.
I'd travel by train at the weekends to discover new towns and I'd go for long walks all the time.
I hope I can do this one day, but I'm not sure what I'd do with the dh and dc.

Kljnmw3459 · 07/02/2021 23:00

I'd go to new york. In a place that size it must be easy to disappear without too much inconvenience to yourself.

rawalpindithelabrador · 07/02/2021 23:01

I'd be a rubber tramp.

Kindlethefourth · 07/02/2021 23:04

Cruise ship to Norway with kindle in hand. Have already told family that if I disappear that's where I will be. Quite fancy booking a week off work and engineering a row with DH and taking off for Southampton post lockdown.

AliceMcK · 07/02/2021 23:07

Bahamas, a shack on the beach, like the one in death in paradise. Run a small bar like Catherine’s place and watch my kids grow up playing on the beaches enjoying a far less materialistic life.

MacDuffsMuff · 07/02/2021 23:09

The west coast of Scotland. Far enough north to be away from lots but close enough if I wanted company.

Juliancoped · 07/02/2021 23:09

I'd join the hare Krishnas Grin if they'd have me.

40somethingJBJ · 08/02/2021 00:26

I’d buy a little cottage in the countryside in Normandy and spend my days wandering around local markets and pottering around in my rustic little kitchen making soups and bread. I’d have a pretty garden with a big comfy arbour seat where I’d sit in the sun writing poems and drinking wine.

user143677433 · 08/02/2021 00:34

Alnmouth. Or Lisbon. But if wouldn’t work because my family and friends all know to find me there Grin

Ohdofuckofdear · 08/02/2021 00:37

I'd go to Weymouth in Dorset,I have so many lovely memories of going there with my parents,I spent alot of my childhood and teenage years there.

I'd spend my first few weeks in a quite little b and b before moving into a little cottage with a view of the sea,I'd spend my days going for early morning walks along the beach, going swimming, and taking pictures of the coast line and the afternoons sitting out on my balcony drinking tea, breathing in the fresh sea air and reading.

Teddy1970 · 08/02/2021 00:45

Everyone's escape place is so exotic, mine would be Oxfordshire or Buckinghamshire, don't ask me why, but I often find myself looking at Rightmove wistfully...

colouringindoors · 08/02/2021 00:53

Yes I've thought about it!
St Martin's in The Scilly Isles, or Northumberland Coast
or disappear in a city like Edinburgh or Paris. Recreate myself away from everything and everyone.

tobee · 08/02/2021 01:17

Any time in a post Covid world

KobaniDaughters · 08/02/2021 01:22

Oh yeah I’ve had this fantasy for a long time - I’d fuck of to
Mexico City and become a writer

PinkSkyBlue · 08/02/2021 01:28

Yep! I'd be sat on the beach in the Caribbean just soaking up the sun, listening to the waves..bliss

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 08/02/2021 01:31

Vienna. Gorgeous gorgeous place. I've never been but it looks amazing. Fuck knows what I'd do there though, I'd be too busy gawping at all the sights!

It's the dream to go - not the escaping part, just for a very long trip.

JMAngel1 · 08/02/2021 05:08

Awww I find this post quite distressing - I can't imagine not having my life.
Yes, I would love to live by the sea and have loads of alone time but not as much as my life here with my DH and DDs. I'd settle for just disappearing from work - how long before they'd stop sending the pay cheque Grin

JMAngel1 · 08/02/2021 05:09

Vienna is gorgeous - plan the trip for next year now.
