Anyone installed an induction hob after gas and regretted it?

I’m planning a new kitchen. I currently have a gas hob as part of a range cooker (inherited with the house). Definitely going for separate oven /hob next time as the range cooker has been nothing but trouble, but I’m unsure what hob to go for.

Induction jobs are so much more streamlined and easy to clean... but I’m used to the fine tuning of gas. And I am a keen cook who cooks a lot.

Anyone made the switch? Were you happy with the induction hob?

I loved our induction hob. We relocated abroad fairly recently so I have a gas hob again but I would love to have my old induction hob back!

Moondust001 · 06/02/2021 14:36

Didn't do it. I thought about it several times then used one for a couple of weeks in a holiday cottage. After that I vowed never to touch one again!

HalfWomanHalfChocolate · 06/02/2021 14:38

I’ve used one at a friend’s house but never had one in a holiday cottage, so I’ve not had a proper chance to road test. That would be ideal!

I definitely hate the basic electric jobs.

It's such a personal preference.
When we moved into our previous house we went from gas to the in situ induction in that kitchen. Hated it. When we moved to current house and new kitchen was first job on the list, gas hob was non negotiable for me.

StanfordPines · 06/02/2021 14:38

I changed to induction about a month ago. I’d never go back to gas now.

I love that it heats water so quickly. With the extra power boast button it brings a pan of water to a proper rolling boil in less than 2 minutes.
Also you can put things on a really low heat, something I could never do with gas

pickingdaisies · 06/02/2021 14:39

Got induction. Would never go back to gas, unless I can have a permanent kitchen brigade on standby to keep it clean for me

siblingrevelryagain · 06/02/2021 14:40

Had the gas disconnected and a fully electric stove with wipe-clean induction hob 5 years ago. Not regretted it for a second. It’s as instant and controllable as gas but very easy to keep clean.

EmmaStone · 06/02/2021 14:40

Just the ease of cleaning the induction hob vs a gas hob is enough reason for me. LOVE induction hobs.

Twinkie01 · 06/02/2021 14:41

Have induction and don't know whether it is just our v expensive Britannia model or all of them but it's cost us a bloody fortune. Over £1k to fix it, main board went, main induction circuit went (there is no end to the absolute mess that is Glen Dimplex's customer service too, 13 weeks with no bloody hob!) next time it's going in a skip and we're going back to gas. Hate the bloody silver frame to the top too, the kids have dragged saucepans across it and it looks awful.

Rockpooler · 06/02/2021 14:41

No - I've saved hours of my life now that won't be spent cleaning the hob.

triplechoc · 06/02/2021 14:43

We have a cooker with induction hob after always having had gas, and I love love love it - easy to use, very responsive, a dream to clean. I’d definitely get induction again in the future.

AKissAndASmile · 06/02/2021 14:45

The ease of cleaning is the reason I'll never go back to gas: my last three hobs were induction. I love how quickly it brings things to the boil. Admittedly, I'm not a cook and am pretty lazy Grin

TrimmedMyBush · 06/02/2021 14:46

I was forced into an induction as part of our range cooker as our kitchen wasn’t safe for gas.

At first I didn’t love it but then I cleaned it and that was it, true love! I think gas is more reactive but I’m the same as you and love to cook, I’m the chef so I use it all the time. It looks nice and is the future, plus it’s fun buying new pots and pans 😂

User237tyre · 06/02/2021 14:46

Initially I missed the visible difference between the temperatures but soon got used to that. Also you don’t get a hint that it’s boiling over until too late!
But overall no regrets!

RandomMess · 06/02/2021 14:54

No regrets here.

Some cheap ones aren't powerful enough though.

HalfWomanHalfChocolate · 06/02/2021 14:55

Interesting - I didn’t expect so many converts to be happy, tbh!

Very interested to have as many views as possible, keep them coming!

I would never ever go back to gas. Induction is so easy to clean and is just as controllable as gas. We moved to a house with an induction hob so it's over 10 years old now and has never given us any bother. I'm sure new ones are even better.

Also, massive bonus points goes to not having the constant stress that you've forgotten to turn it off like you do (or at least I did) with gas.

ImInACage · 06/02/2021 14:57

I love our induction hob. We also switched from gas. It's so easy to clean, it heats really quickly and I don't need to worry about it being turned on by accident because it won't work if the pans aren't there.

We had one in a holiday rental flat in portugal a few years ago....no instructions, found some tips on youtube but just couldnt get used to it...gave up....ate out !!...it may have been faulty....rings kept going from orange to off ...do they only work once the pan is on the ring...??...

DavidsSchitt · 06/02/2021 15:05

We're also making the switch but I'm a bit nervous!!

Yes. The pan has to be there for it to work.
bettybyebye · 06/02/2021 15:06

We’ve just had a new kitchen and DH was pushing for an induction hob but I am the main cook and was determined to go for gas. Stayed with family whilst the building work was done and they had an induction hob and I am so glad we didn’t get one as I couldn’t get on with it at all! We went for gas hob with black gas underneath which is a lot easier to clean

JuliesIpad · 06/02/2021 15:07

I loathe induction with a passion. Give me gas any day. We don't have gas to the house though.

I too am very happy with my induction hob. It is at least as responsive as gas, super easy to clean, looks good and so much safer than gas. I would never go back to gas.
