Anyone installed an induction hob after gas and regretted it?

I’m planning a new kitchen. I currently have a gas hob as part of a range cooker (inherited with the house). Definitely going for separate oven /hob next time as the range cooker has been nothing but trouble, but I’m unsure what hob to go for.

Induction jobs are so much more streamlined and easy to clean... but I’m used to the fine tuning of gas. And I am a keen cook who cooks a lot.

Anyone made the switch? Were you happy with the induction hob?

We have a Miele induction hob. It’s brilliant. Nine temperature settings and so responsive when you turn it up or down. Easy to clean. It does seem to like certain saucepans more than others though, especially good with Le Creuset stainless steel pans, so it could get expensive!

Candleabra · 06/02/2021 16:24

Hmm yes that's a good point about buying new pans as well. How much (roughly) has it cost you to replace all your cookware with enough to manage - few different size saucepans, frying pan etc? Are any brands particularly good?

Yes, we switch from a Britannia double oven/6 burner gas range to an induction hob.

I loved the look of the Britannia range (when it was clean...) and never had any problems with it (worked great) but it seriously compromised the kitchen layout, was a PITA to clean (and looked horrible when not clean) and DH had a really bad habit of putting a gas burner on so low you could barely see it to heat things up/keep them warm and then forgetting about it long after he had finished with it (he did this a LOT)...one day I came back from shopping and plonked the bags for life on the range...thankfully I was there to deal with the fire but...

We now have a four 'ring' Miele induction hob...I love it. It is unbelievably easy to clean, so much so that it is always clean and so responsive and so...SAFE! The ovens are miele too and, although pricey, I don't regret switching at all.

All our pans already worked with it so didn't need to replace any.

@Ifailed

I have never seen a professional kitchen using anything but gas, if induction heating is so good, why don't they use it?
This is very true and I’m sure professional chefs have good reasons for using gas. I’m not a professional chef. I want to heat a tin of soup, boil some pasta or make porridge (among other things), so induction is fine for me.
HeronLanyon · 06/02/2021 16:35

I e used induction and really didn’t get on with it.
Gas absolutely all the way for me. Only takes 5 mins to clean maybe once a week surely? Also think looks like a proper working kitchen but then I’ve lived all my life cooking on gas. Definitely prejudiced.
Also how would I tip a pan or nudge a little pan of butter next to a small flame or scorch an aubergine or pepper ??

reluctantbrit · 06/02/2021 16:37

I got ours 4 years ago and I wouldn’t change back to gas. One of the main benefits is that it is so easy to clean and I have additional space when not cooking, we have a tiny galley kitchen, so very useful.

Only drawback - it is glass and we learned the lesson when I dropped a glass jar onto it, it breaks. So all spice jars and baking supplies which are in the cupboards above the hob are made from plastic.

We had one in our last house. Came with the house. Was fine with my icd. I tried to keep a reasonable distance from it and didn’t lie on it. Didn’t like it though and now have gas in this house. Just thinking about changing the kitchen and I think will go for gas again.

LetMeOut2021 · 06/02/2021 16:41

I like cooking on gas but induction hobs are much easier to clean.

Our new property doesn’t have gas so it wasn’t much of a choice for me!

tinkywinkyshandbag · 06/02/2021 16:42

Yes I hate mine. I call it the stupid beepy bastard. I'd have gas again like a shot.

LondonSE · 06/02/2021 16:42

@Oldraver

It does take a while to suss out the power levels as it does 'pulse', so when a pan is in with water it will bubble then stop then bubble up again, though you do get used to this. The first few times we did have some boiling over and spills

But the magic of it means you can do this while cooking

Induction here too and wouldn't go back (installed a gas pipe just in case tho!). I place bowls and cloths on mine and don't have to worry about flames. Its cleaner and safer. I also love being able to set timer for say 3 or 30 minutes and not to have to think about it again. Mine has power boost but i would say gas probably gives higher and quicker heat transfer. If you are used to doing a lot of wok cooking and like that burst of intense heat, you may be disappointed by induction.
CriticalWoman · 06/02/2021 16:42

I changed and am happy. Way more control than a gas hob.

makingitupaswegoon · 06/02/2021 16:42

nope

Solasum · 06/02/2021 16:48

I love mine. Would never go back to gas

wibblewombat · 06/02/2021 16:49

Yep, another fan here too.

SlipperyLizard · 06/02/2021 16:53

We’ve got an AEG induction hob with a gas wok burner - best of both worlds. I like both, induction is great for careful cooking like custard or hollandaise, also boils water super fast. Gas is good for stir fries and the odd pan we have that doesn’t work on induction. I also have a stove top pizza oven that requires gas, so some sort of gas ring was a must.

Induction wins hands down on cleaning, so much easier.

CheshireCats · 06/02/2021 16:56

I've had induction for 5 years. Love it, would definitely choose it again if we moved. Mine is a "budget" price model and whilst the two main rings are rapid and very responsive to temp changes, the two smaller rings are nowhere near as powerful. So I will definitely spend a bit more when ever it needs replacing. But I am definitely a lifelong convert now!

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 06/02/2021 16:56

My husband is a chef. When I said I wanted induction in the kitchen when we changed it he really did not want to move over from gas but I persuaded him. Six months later he'd not go back.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/02/2021 17:02

I believe you need steel or iron pans, aluminum pans won't work.
You can test your existing pans with a magnet and if it attaches to them then they should be OK with an induction hob.

Snooks1971 · 06/02/2021 17:11

Induction here for the last 5 years after changing from Smeg gorgeous looking gas hob. MUCH prefer the look of a gas hob, but such a doddle to clean does it for me with induction. We have a large 5 ring Neff, the 2 rings on the right actually work together as a rectangular zone. Yes it beeps, but it seems every thing else does too! The Fischer& Paykel fridge beeps like a bastard, so does the microwave...

I cook a lot and love it. Would never go back to gas.

BringPizza · 06/02/2021 18:00

We have induction and it's brilliant, very responsive. I had the option of LPG for the hob but stuck with electric so we had to have the supply beefed up Grin Our old ceramic hob (not induction but the same flat top) was crap by comparison, and I wonder if some people assume all flat tops are induction?

Snooks1971 · 06/02/2021 18:12

Good point @BringPizza, think I did...

MrsT1405 · 06/02/2021 18:18

I've had several and love them. Quick, powerful, responsive. Latest one from IKEA, spain. Cheap as chips, brilliant.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 06/02/2021 18:25

I recently changed. It's so easy to clean and makes my kitchen look slicker. No probs with cooking. I love it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/02/2021 18:29

I love mine. I’d never go back to gas now.
