Anyone installed an induction hob after gas and regretted it?

I’m planning a new kitchen. I currently have a gas hob as part of a range cooker (inherited with the house). Definitely going for separate oven /hob next time as the range cooker has been nothing but trouble, but I’m unsure what hob to go for.

Induction jobs are so much more streamlined and easy to clean... but I’m used to the fine tuning of gas. And I am a keen cook who cooks a lot.

Anyone made the switch? Were you happy with the induction hob?

I recently moved and had to give up my gas hob range cooker. I was gutted at the time but I love the induction hob. It’s so easy to keep clean. Took a while to get used to tho

Jasperjosephjulian · 06/02/2021 15:12

I've got an induction now after having had gas - purely because we moved and the new village doesn't have any gas pipes. So not exactly by choice.
Induction is better than a normal electric hob... But nowhere near as good as gas. Cleaning the hob is easier, I'll give it that! But I'd go back to has in an instant if I could. I'm an avid cook.

We have an induction now, and after 20 years of whining about not having gas, DH agrees it is a good thing, and lovingly polishes the glass top.

Mine is AEG.

If you get one I’d totally recommend spending the money on a really decent brand. Ie Miele.

Fatandfifty49 · 06/02/2021 15:17

I went from gas to standard electric to induction and I must admit I don't like it much. Water takes ages to boil and it keeps going off

Dressingdown1 · 06/02/2021 15:17

We changed from gas to induction a few years ago. I love the induction hob, find it very responsive and really easy to clean. DH wanted to stay with gas but it was so difficult to keep the gas hob clean, that he finally agreed to the change. Now he loves it and would never go back to gas.

I find it much easier to control the heat with a gas hob. I like being able to physically see the flame so I can gauge how much I need to turn it up or down. With an induction it’s more guess work and much more constantly having to adjust the temperature.
Induction is much easier to clean and I think it looks nicer in the kitchen - more streamlined- but purely from a practical cooking point of view gas wins hands down for me.

ginislife · 06/02/2021 15:19

What @MrsPinkCock says !! I went from gas to induction 12 months ago with a new kitchen and while it is lovely and so much easier to clean it drives me insane when it cuts out because you put a spoon down on it !!!

Keratinsmooth · 06/02/2021 15:20

We have a Neff induction hob. I wouldn't have anything else now. Initially it was because of the faff and cost of moving gas point after building work, I was very very anti electric hobs but love it

Justtrying · 06/02/2021 15:20

We currently have gas, keen cook here too, how does wok cooking compare on induction? I do a lot of stir fry.

Keratinsmooth · 06/02/2021 15:21

In terms of speed to heat it’s very good but also fast cooling. You can put your hand on it after turned off, this appealed with young DC

StanfordPines · 06/02/2021 15:24

That is one thing I don’t think you can do really. The pan has to have constant contact with the hob, so lifting off like you do with a wok wouldn’t really work.
MiniDoofa · 06/02/2021 15:24

@ImInACage

I love our induction hob. We also switched from gas. It's so easy to clean, it heats really quickly and I don't need to worry about it being turned on by accident because it won't work if the pans aren't there.
Exactly these reasons. Love it. Would never go back to gas (which feels so dangerous by comparison, balancing the pan in those 4 spokes with a naked flame!!!!)
partyatthepalace · 06/02/2021 15:25

I did previously and bloody hated it

Gas all the way

Oldraver · 06/02/2021 15:25

We changed to induction a few years ago as the new oven wouldn't fit the space as it hit the gas pipe

We absolutely love it, it heats up quickly and us responsive. I love that you can time it and will switch itself off ( I have form for wandering off and leaving stuff on the job)

A few things irritate, we had one of those glass boards and it slid into the hob glass and chipped it. It does throw a wobbly if say if you take something out of the oven and put it on the hob when it's switched on (OH looking at you). You can't do the burnt of peppers thing

We have also recently realised after having to replace a burnt frying pan not to use the p setting for frying, and instructions for our cafe iron pan says to bring up to heat gently not on p.

The frying pan was also too big for the ring and think this contributed to it burning in the middle and OH cremating pineapple

I assumed that we’d go for gas when we did our kitchen, then while we were doing the work we lived in a house with an amazing induction hob and we ended up getting the same one. It’s a Neff one and I love it. They are a lot more expensive than gas, but they are much more responsive than gas, it’s easier to cook without the food sticking etc, and it’s all beautiful and shiny/easy to clean. Would never go back to gas now!

Pashazade · 06/02/2021 15:27

Only downsize is when the power goes out and I can no longer make a cup of tea! But otherwise love it although I would say you very much get what you pay for, so a more expensive model will likely be less temperamental and more responsive.

Kotbullar · 06/02/2021 15:28

I had one for about a month when we installed the kitchen then switched back to gas.
I wanted to love it but I only loved how easy it was to clean. I hated cooking on it.

VanGoghsDog · 06/02/2021 15:29

@earsup

We had one in a holiday rental flat in portugal a few years ago....no instructions, found some tips on youtube but just couldnt get used to it...gave up....ate out !!...it may have been faulty....rings kept going from orange to off ...do they only work once the pan is on the ring...??...
Yes, that's the whole point of them! Way better for old or forgetful people.
mandragora · 06/02/2021 15:29

When I was considering it somebody said to me that there's a good reason you never see chefs using anything but gas.

Oldraver · 06/02/2021 15:32

It does take a while to suss out the power levels as it does 'pulse', so when a pan is in with water it will bubble then stop then bubble up again, though you do get used to this. The first few times we did have some boiling over and spills

But the magic of it means you can do this while cooking

Anyone installed an induction hob after gas and regretted it?
RedRosie · 06/02/2021 15:32

I love ours and we cook a lot. I think it's one of those areas where you get what you pay for to some extent ... So I'd echo the advice to get a good one. Ours is a Neff.

I prefer it to gas (cleaner, just as responsive) and to our previous ceramic hob (clean, but a pain in every other way).

doodleygirl · 06/02/2021 15:34

I’m a keen cook and went from gas to induction, would never go back

Trillo · 06/02/2021 15:35

Love ours - so quick and clean. It was an expensive one though; we had one in a holiday cottage a few years ago and it was utter rubbish.

If you’re not having a range cooker, have you thought of having a domino hob? 4 rings induction and then one or two gas. Best of both worlds if you like to cook in a wok, make flatbreads, omelettes and pancakes, or chargrill. My one criticism of our hob is it’s not brilliant for Indian or Chinese cookery.

SaguaroBlossom · 06/02/2021 15:37

Always cooked with gas, but enjoyed using induction hobs on holidays. We now have a Bosch induction hob and I LOVE it. Feel more in control, because each number is always the same temperature, and it is much faster than a gas hob. Would never go back to gas .
