I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

And Australia

adeleh · 31/01/2021 03:22

I’ve been staying in loads of different hotels in Paris over the last 40 years and have never been told I’m at risk of being raped or mugged. I think you were unlucky brownies.

GADDay · 31/01/2021 03:31

@Chookie89

This thread has been reported. Full of Brits once again complaining about racism and xenophobia.... while being racist and xenophobic.

Honestly, you couldn't make it up.

Thank fuck for that. This thread is depressing in the extreme.

Writing off whole cultures and countries on a whim. Bloody disgusting!

Pyewhacket · 31/01/2021 03:42

I’ve travelled widely, worked overseas in several countries and lived in southern France I was always glad to get back to the UK. The only place I was sad to leave was the US. I met some lovely people and made good friends. I loved the open spaces and spent a week in the saddle. You could set up camp anywhere you wanted and the sense of freedom was amazing. Get out of the city and take a road trip or take a train to New Orleans or Nashville or hike the Appalachian trail. I loved my time there and when we’re allowed to travel again I’ll go back.

PeggyHill · 31/01/2021 04:13

What on earth is the point of this thread?!

Hey, let's make a list of other countries that we have never been to and have no experience of, and spout a load of prejudice and racism about them?

Fuck me. Utterly vile.

FortunesFave · 31/01/2021 04:13

Australia not 'a bit British' at all. There's as much or less racism here as there is in the UK.

PeggyHill · 31/01/2021 04:15

I think the person making that comment has conveniently forgotten about the Indigenous people of Australia and their culture. Not a surprise really, given that half the comments on here are racist.

This thread is horrible.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/01/2021 04:27

This thread seems to be full of people who go to places, only do the things they hate, ignore all the things they like, and then write the place off as somewhere they wouldn't want to go to Confused

Go to Spain, stay in an AI resort and not visit the museums, places like the Alhambra in Granada, go hiking in the mountains, wander round cities like Malaga, which has far more to offer than just being a gateway to the Costa del Sol etc.

Or somewhere like The Maldives, say there's nothing to do, because they don't dive, which is the main USP of why someone would want to go there, along with 'couples we're so in love, all we want to do is stare into each other's eyes and shag' of course. If you don't fall into either of those categories, why go there?

Somewhere like Vegas and only spend time in the casinos even though you're not interested in gambling, but ignore all the fancy hotels, trips to the Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon etc.

I'd probably go to most places, and find something I'd like, and would only not want to go to places that would be very busy and I'd get hassled all the time, or where there's lots of in your face poverty and animal cruelty.

Even somewhere like Spain, which many people seem to write off the entire country as a Benidorm style theme park, I have a long list of places I want to go or revisit, none of which involve all inclusive resorts, getting pissed or English breakfasts.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 31/01/2021 04:53

This thread made me LOL a bit. We're about to go to Florida for a week. I can't wait to wear flip flops instead of snow boots. Eat at restaurants outdoors in the sunshine. Visit Kennedy Space Center. Kayak through Rock Springs. Look for turtles and manatees. Do the canal boat tour through Winter Park. Drink my coffee each morning on the deck overlooking the beach.

It's going to be horrible Grin

123MothergotafleA · 31/01/2021 05:05

Dublin.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 31/01/2021 05:06

I travel to Florida (my favourite place in the world - not Disney, but the Keys or Anna Maria usually) and it feels colourful! Vibrant and bright. Hot and comfortable. I feel lighter the moment I step off the plane and see the sunshine, Spanish moss and smell green. Yes, it rains there...but it’s warm and over quickly for the most part. I desperately miss it when I return to the UK.

@DBML - I love Anna Maria too. Never made it as far as the Keys, but would absolutely love to go there.

Travelledtheworld · 31/01/2021 05:08

I wouldn't want to go anywhere with a shocking human rights record.
Or any "resort" full of drunken holiday makers.
But I am quite fond of Florida it's quirky and interesting, just avoid Disney and try not to discuss politics.

Travelledtheworld · 31/01/2021 05:11

@ZZTopGuitarSolo Have you read The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean ? Thats a fascinating insight into the Ecology of Florida.
Or anything by Karl Hiessen, even the children's books ?

Ineffably stupid thread predicated on what people think rather than what they know, have researched or experienced.

And fuck your faux-naive accusation about Australia being racist.

It isn't. Countries have racist pasts which are very specific. They have racist presents which are also specific. These are true of Australia, as they are of so many countries and need to be specifically referred to.

I have yet to see thread on MN where, when invited to visit/holiday live in say, the USA/UK cites racism as a reason for not visiting/ living.

exiledfromcornwall · 31/01/2021 05:17

The Caribbean. No idea why, it's just never appealed. Also second Dubai, New York, and I think I'd die of boredom in the Maldives.

I haven't but I'm always looking for good books, especially when they're set somewhere that I'm visiting. Do you have a recommendation for a Karl Hiessen to start with?

I have read The Yearling

meltedgalaxy · 31/01/2021 05:20

Dubai

Australia - nothing against it, just doesn't seem like my cup of tea

Las Vegas - I'd be so bored!

honeybooboo26 · 31/01/2021 05:22

@Dashel

You need to watch Karl Pilkingtons Idiot Abroad travel series, so funny and in some cases puts you right off visiting some of the bucket list places
@Dashel I love this programme 😂😂😂

Fuck me. Utterly vile.

So I’m not allowed to say I wouldn’t visit a country where my mere existence is a crime, in some cases punishable by death.

In what way is knowing a countries law vile?

exiledfromcornwall · 31/01/2021 05:37

We once went to Hawaii as part of a round the world trip. I remember being glad we hadn't flown all the way there just for Hawaii because frankly we might as well have gone to Tenerife.

TibetanTerrier · 31/01/2021 05:57
***@jenthelibrarian Scotland
The Lake District

Been to both, so I know I needn't go back.
Probably anywhere else that is supposed to be 'scenic'.

I like a loud, busy city with history and culture and people to watch and loads to see and so*

Glasgow?
Edinburgh

Both busy cities with 1000 plus years if history, culture, people to watch and loads to see and do.

There is more to Scotland than 'supposed scenery'
And, @jenthelibrarian, if you think the Highlands and Islands are "supposed to be scenic" then you must be blind.

GADDay · 31/01/2021 05:58

@simonjt

Don't be obtuse. That is a valid reason not to visit a countrty.

What I, and many others on this thread object to is the ridiculous reasons people completely write off whole countries. It is coming across as grossly xenophobic and racist.

pollywollydoodler · 31/01/2021 05:58

Anywhere above 25 degrees is out...

FuriousWithTheNHS · 31/01/2021 06:05

Oh I love these threads, they are like Bingo. I can already predict that certain things will be said....can't wait to read and see if I am right.

FuriousWithTheNHS · 31/01/2021 06:10

Dubai - just a less classy hong kong with shitty rights.

The two places COULD NOT be more different. Except for the shitty rights. Although in HK the shitty rights apply to everyone. In Dubai they only apply to foreigners. HK is fascinating on many levels but it's not what I'd call classy. It's actually pretty run down and tired.
