I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

Oh wow, all you people missing out on New York! It’s wonderful.
Similarly London.... and Thailand Grin
Agree on Dubai though...

LakeGeneva · 30/01/2021 17:31

Puerto pollensa.

Frequentflier · 30/01/2021 17:35

Surprised so many say Turkey. Assume it is bcos of Erdogan? Have lived there and it is literally the most beautiful country on earth. Or in the top 5.

Frequentflier · 30/01/2021 17:39

Thailand's also fantastic and you don't have to go to sex shops if you don't want toShock

grassisjeweled · 30/01/2021 17:41

Anywhere in the ME, especially Dubai.

Disney doesn't appeal to me at all.

Wouldn't touch North Africa with a barge pole

LakeGeneva · 30/01/2021 17:42

Turkey is really lovely in terms of scenery etc but I've also lived there and the blokes are truly a pita. Plus I guess for most people in the UK Turkey means low budget AI.

Bangable · 30/01/2021 17:53
@Bangable why weird and ignorant? It's my experience! And because I find too much cooking on holiday isn't much like a holiday it's put me off going again... vegetarian food in the UK is sometimes pretty substandard outside big cities especially in pubs. The lakes from my 5+ visits there to Windermere, Keswick, Buttermere, Grasmere amongst others seem to be all about pubs!
I go to the Lakes as much as possible and never cook! We often go for a weekend solely for the food (a six hour journey). There are seven restaurants with Michelin Stars in the Lakes, including the two star L'Enclume in Cartmel. The Cottage in the Wood in Braithwaite, The Old Stamp House in Ambleside and Allium at Askham Hall are all especially good. Stating that food is crap because the Lakes, in your opinion, don’t cater for your dietary needs IS a weird thing to say (I am veggie and have had some of the best veggie food of my life in the Lakes) and to state the food in the Lakes is crap IS ignorant, as outlined above.

Ah fair enough. I am Indian and thus do not face the kind of harassment many blonde women do in various parts.
Mochudubh · 30/01/2021 18:08

Cruise - captive on a floating tower block, no thanks.
Scottish Islands- too wet, windy and not enough trees.

Thedarknightsarelifting · 30/01/2021 18:19

@Tisforptarmigan *Yup, whole of Scotland.

Cold, midges, propensity to cover everything in tartan and their desire for independence.*

How very small minded of you.
Not all Scottish people want independence, hence the referendum result. I don’t have any tartan furnishings in my home nor a midgie infestation.

I do however live by the same, with a view of a beautiful island. I am on the edge of a town with amazing restaurants, surrounded by historical monuments and countryside yet within an hour of a world renowned city. Thank god miserable slightly xenophobic folks like you don’t want to visit and spoil it for us locals!

Thedarknightsarelifting · 30/01/2021 18:20

By the sea*

blowinahoolie · 30/01/2021 18:25

"Yup, whole of Scotland."

Someone's been watching too much Braveheart🤪

Look, it's honestly not like the film😂

It took me a minute to figure out what you meant by AI. All I could think of is artificial insemination! Grin
CorianderBee · 30/01/2021 18:34

Dubai - no way in hell I'm going there. I'm a reporter and I don't trust that I would be safe. Am also a woman so, you know.

Las Vegas - I might go one day, but I don't gamble at all and it feels a bit too fast and aggressive for me.

Miami - I've been and thought it was ugly.

CorianderBee · 30/01/2021 18:36

@NeedWineNow the Maldives isn't boring if you like water sports, incredible snorkelling (so many fish and turtles and rays)! And spas and boat rides where dolphins play alongside the boat. I also went to a restaurant which was underwater in the Indian Ocean. Outdoor sunrise yoga 😍

I thoroughly enjoyed the 5 days.

FrenchFancie · 30/01/2021 19:05

I have horrific sea sickness so cruises are out. Won’t pay all that money to throw up for two weeks and I’m not gambling on gaining my ‘sea legs’.
I won’t go to Dubai due to human rights abuses. Or China for that matter.
I’ve been to some other places in the Middle East though that were amazing so I won’t count anywhere else out. Saudi Arabia is a difficult one - again, horrible human rights issues but I’m torn because it’s very off the beaten path. Don’t I will go though.
Other than that’s I’d be open to most places I think. Am surprised people were warned about Paris, have been drunk there fairly frequently and never felt unsafe!

user1467048527 · 30/01/2021 19:13

Dubai for me too. And Saudi Arabia.

Beyond those, can’t think of anywhere I’d actively want to avoid. Less appealing I guess are places that seem hard work for different reasons - Cornwall (looks gorgeous, but expensive and crowded in high season), Thailand (needing to avoid the over-developed bits, would also not be keen on a long flight with party animals!), France (spent many happy holidays there as a child but drove through a few years ago and was shocked at how dear and poor the food we found was)...

Places that raise ethical concerns too - anywhere where rights appear to be going backwards. And, yes, after seeing something very distressing in Cambodia am wary of some countries from an animal rights perspective.

I do find the early comments about Europe rather silly. We’re all entitled to our preferences and if someone were to say they’re not keen on Europe because they aren’t interested in history and prefer the polish of Dubai or Disney that is coherent even if I don’t personally agree - but saying the whole place is ‘musty’ is just weird! As for selling castles over social and political problems - well, that’s the tourist industry. And I’d say the disconnect between what the average tourist experiences and how locals live is probably on the low-side in Europe.

Cam2020 · 30/01/2021 19:14

Completely agree with Dubai. It just seems soulless and vulgar to me.

Lauraa7 · 30/01/2021 21:34

I agree with Dubai, I really don’t see the appeal.
Any type of beach holiday is a no from me, or anywhere with heaps of brits.
I’m more into experiences and currently planning a trip to swim with whale sharks of Western Australia.

Lauraa7 · 30/01/2021 21:36

*off

squeekums · 31/01/2021 01:36

Bali to touristy
Middle east. Just no
Most of America to gun happy
The UK to cold and wet

Chookie89 · 31/01/2021 02:41

This thread has been reported. Full of Brits once again complaining about racism and xenophobia.... while being racist and xenophobic.

Honestly, you couldn't make it up.

StartupRepair · 31/01/2021 03:07

Australia is not hot all the time. It has seasons and completely different climates in different parts. It really is not 'England with sunshine'.

1forAll74 · 31/01/2021 03:19

Dubai, Disneyland Florida, Las Vegas..Venice.
