Places people rave about but you don't really have any desire to visit

I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

Eeerrr, read this post back to yourself and then perhaps consider if you are in the best position to describe anyone as racist.

Another for New York. I've been. Everyone else loved it. I was just Hmm

FuriousWithTheNHS · 31/01/2021 06:40

Hong Kong. It just seems so crowded it makes me feel a bit claustrophobic. It's probably not like that at all but the sheer number of high rises makes me feel like you'd be sort of hemmed in on all sides most of the time.

That is EXACTLY what it's like. Also very, very hilly.

Fascinating though, it felt safe and quite friendly, but much more tired, grey and run down than I expected it to be. Everything looks like you are seeing it through a pinky-grey mist, like an old photo from the 60s with really washed out colours.

SavannahMiasMum · 31/01/2021 06:41

America.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 31/01/2021 06:42

@exiledfromcornwall
Interesting. Did you visit all of the islands or just Honolulu?

FuriousWithTheNHS · 31/01/2021 06:43

I didn’t get Hong Kong, but was there after a previous visit 25 years ago and couldn’t believe how much it had changed

That really surprises me because I went quite recently and it looked to me like nothing had been done to anywhere in at least 25 years. Grin

Roselilly36 · 31/01/2021 06:45

IKEA

DinosaurDiana · 31/01/2021 06:48

Nando’s. It’s just chicken and chips with Savoury Rice.

eaglejulesk · 31/01/2021 06:50

I also HATE heat! I'd visit NZ if I could afford to fly first class, it's much cooler

Ha, ha - it was 40 degrees here last Tuesday, I don't call that cool.

BumbleBeegu · 31/01/2021 06:50

Egypt...whilst I'd love to see the pyramids of course, as historical/architectural legends...I have absolutely no desire to visit the country.

PTH20 · 31/01/2021 06:51

Dubai

BumbleBeegu · 31/01/2021 06:51

(Obviously I meant 'legends' in a WOW sense! I know they're real 🤣)

eaglejulesk · 31/01/2021 07:14

This thread is nuts! I've never seen so many assertions based on ignorance before. My mind is truly boggled that I walk this earth with so many people who hold these kinds of views.

Agree. I find it sad that so many have such closed minds.

GADDay · 31/01/2021 07:28

@pollywollydoodler

Anywhere above 25 degrees is out...
Well at least your criteria is reasonable - if only for yourself.

A shame though because you have pretty much excluded so many incredible places.

lockeddownandcrazy · 31/01/2021 07:31

Big cities. China where live dogs are sold at markets, the pyramids

We went to Egypt on a Nile cruise a couple of years ago, unexpectedly it was one of my favourite holidays. Luxor and the valley of the kings, the Aswan dam, the other amazing temples on the way, the museum in Cairo, Cairo itself. I loved it, all of it. The pyramids were the least impressive thing. Just wish we’d booked to go to alexandria.

You should have seen it 25 years ago. To be fair I was a skinflint backpacker then, but it was very different. Went to Beijing on same trip, seeing husband’s pictures of his business trip there a couple of years ago...a whole lot fewer bicycles and way more high rise!
blisstwins · 31/01/2021 07:36

@Fastedbrownie

Oh, and New York. Talk about an overrated city.
nooooooooooooooo
Weedsnseeds1 · 31/01/2021 07:40

I don't think I have been anywhere where I couldn't find a few positives. I end up in a lot of random places for work, that it probably wouldn't occur to me to visit otherwise, some of them have been unexpectedly amazing, some less so.
Probably the worst place I have been was Bentonville, Arkansas, but the people were lovely!
Hong Kong has great food, beautiful beaches, miles of hiking. Its not just Hong Kong island itself.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 31/01/2021 07:42

Ski resorts. Why spend all that money just to go up and down a mountain all day. I can't think of anything more boring.

merrygoround88 · 31/01/2021 07:50

I’ve a pretty open mind regarding travel so I’d give most places a go. I’ve also been surprised by how much I liked certain places I didn’t expect to like - for instance Bangkok, Majorca, Stockholm and Jerusalem and hated others - Hong Kong, Fes....

I think tarring whole countries because you have been to one place you didn’t like that a foolish

DipSwimSwoosh · 31/01/2021 07:51

I agree with a PP - are we just showing ignorance in this thread, or trying to insult? Either way many responses make the posters sound unkind and culturally ignorant.

yearinyearout · 31/01/2021 07:55

Dubai. Can't see the appeal of a holiday that just revolves around fancy hotels and shopping malls.

Pootle40 · 31/01/2021 07:56

What a strange thread.
