Places people rave about but you don't really have any desire to visit

I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

South Africa
Disney Florida

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 14:14

@natalienewname I'm visiting them lots currently as I have 3 "locally" so the covid police can't arrest me for being out of area... Plus there's absolutely nothing else to do... Once there is... I'm finding alternative entertainment!!

'Mainland Europe' -huh?

I think Hawaii would be awful - tower blocks, packed beaches, drunk Americans on vacation, no desire to go at all.

Devon - second rate beaches and it pisses with rain the whole time. (I have lived there and don't mind if I never go back).

The Maldives - boring plus Islamic extremism

Portugal - lacking in charm; second rate food

LOVE/WOULD LOVE TO GO:
Australia
Scandinavia
Canada
France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland
Scottish west coast
@Tisforptarmigan the whole of Scotland? I love the Lake District but not a ski fan and Benidorm is my idea of hell alongside Blackpool!
Yup, whole of Scotland.

Cold, midges, propensity to cover everything in tartan and their desire for independence.

RonaldMcDonald · 30/01/2021 14:31

Egypt, Dubai, Turkey, New Zealand

evouk · 30/01/2021 14:32

Australia for me. I don't like flying

People think they've done this amazing thing by going to Oz but it's just England with warmer weather. They even speak English so it's not like you need to learn the language to get by

MessAllOver · 30/01/2021 14:33

@nuitdesetoiles. We're probably one of those families! Have 3 fairly locally and so visit quite a lot.

I had no idea passers-by were judging us for stopping our 3yo diving into the fountains or running through the flower beds. It's an interesting complaint! I shall henceforth be a much more laissez-faire parent Grin.

natalienewname · 30/01/2021 14:39

@MessAllOver

For me it's less about fountains and flowerbeds, more about that type of parent that comes prepared with a large rucksack of 'just in case'...wipes, extra wipes, plasters, changes of clothes, bags of lentil crisps. 'Careful cycling Rafferty' 'Mind the puddle Mia' etc etc. Watching them get out of the car is painful...the fuss, the stuff, the faffery.

And then on the return...coax coax coax out of dirty puddle suit and coax coax coax into car seat: just whack muddy stuff off and whack them in.

In their defence, my issue, not theirs and I wouldn't notice if I wasn't so hateful of being an another tedious NT property

SwedishEdith · 30/01/2021 14:39

Anywhere that's just based on sunbathing/snorkelling etc (don't do either) - Maldives, probably lots of Caribbean islands.
Anywhere that's about ostentatious wealth - Dubai, Las Vegas, Monaco, Singapore, probably lots of new Chinese cities now.
Australia - everywhere is too far away from anywhere else. We could stay with family from Perth but I'm not interested. To any "Wow, but the beaches (see above)" comments, I just think you can get the same in Portugal.

PattyPan · 30/01/2021 14:41

Dubai/anywhere in the Middle East with the possible exception of Jordan for Petra.
Bali
Turkey
Spanish resorts - I’ve been to Barcelona and I’d like go to Granada but no interest in Tenerife, Costa del Sol, Mallorca etc - I’m not a beach person.
Any ski resort as I don’t ski so I’d probably get a bit bored!

@EmbMonStu I love Slovenia! One of the most beautiful countries I’ve been to. It’s top of our list to go back when travel is safe again. Lake Bohinj is incredible.

The other best places I’ve been are Belize and Costa Rica which I’m glad not to see on this thread, they’re both amazing.

I’ve been vegan for 4 years and before that was vegetarian since the age of 18 and have never been anywhere that couldn’t cater for me, sometimes it’s varying quality (Croatia springs to mind) but this is something that concerns me about visiting China because I’ve heard they don’t really understand it. That plus the pollution and human rights issues put me off China even though there’s a lot of stuff I’d love to see there.

I’ve been to Paris a lot of times and have never understood the appeal. I actually prefer Amsterdam for art. I don’t like London either, probably a case of familiarity breeds contempt for that one.

MessAllOver · 30/01/2021 14:48

@nuitdesetoiles. Grin. No, that's not us then... My DS is usually the one sat in the puddle or rolling down the hill caked in mud. And we don't do spare clothes, wipes or lentil crisps... just the occasional shared slice of cake eaten with muddy hands.

MessAllOver · 30/01/2021 14:49

Sorry, that was @natalienewname.

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 14:53

Slovenia is on the list for us. There's a holiday company that does winter holidays there for non skiers etc and it looks amazing. Have been to Croatia once and would like to explore a bit more..

@CottonSock

There is so much in mainland Europe I don't actually see the point in travelling long haul anymore.
Exactly this. I have had amazing trips to London, Rome, Amsterdam, Cologne, Barcelona and Paris among others. Especially Paris, i have been there many times and would love to go again. I would love to go to St. Petersburg too, it sounds fab. Dubai or somewhere like the Caribbean, no thanks.
Hugoslavia · 30/01/2021 16:11

Liverpool

Literallynoidea · 30/01/2021 16:50

Liverpool is FABULOUS @Hugoslavia - tho I must admit I discovered that to my surprise, as I'd expected to hate it.

MaryIsA · 30/01/2021 16:51

What's wrong with liverpool?

I love NW Scotland visited many times and would happily retire there. Husband been once. It's very far down his list of places he'd go again. Wet, midget and f all to do with dire pubs. And we live on the IOM....

MaryIsA · 30/01/2021 16:51

Not midget...midges

blowinahoolie · 30/01/2021 16:57

MaryIsA look forward to one day visiting Liverpool. I have always wanted to go. Not really interested in going abroad. Been there done it. A city break in the UK would be brilliant.

I have been to York and loved it there.

TroysMammy · 30/01/2021 17:04

Turkey
Dubai
Anywhere else involving a long journey by airplane which is probably most of the world.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 30/01/2021 17:04

Dubai was my first thought
Just why?
One huge shopping mall in a desert

blowinahoolie · 30/01/2021 17:07

DH wants to go back to Japan, but I would prefer to learn about it all via YouTube. Have no desire to fly out to a far flung country. He went years ago before I met him. That's where we part ways in terms of what we want from a holiday.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 30/01/2021 17:08

I'm not fussed about New York either I'd so much rather go to New Orleans.

Literallynoidea · 30/01/2021 17:12

Yes agree those saying Turkey. Ditto Egypt. I have been been hassled by men enough in north Africa to know that the chaps in those countries hold little allure for me.

PattyPan · 30/01/2021 17:26

I think long flights can be awful if it’s during the daytime and you don’t sleep and have to fill hours of time, or if it’s overnight but you can’t sleep. But when we’ve flown overnight and managed to sleep during it (I slept the whole way to and from Mexico!) it’s been great. I’ve taken sleeper trains and also travelled by bus/coach overnight and managed to kip on there too - saves time at the destination if you can do it.
