Places people rave about but you don't really have any desire to visit

I know there's some element of judgement here but just based on what I've heard, seen on TV, types of people who go there, read about..

Dubai.. like plastic fantastic, cultureless and horrifically tacky

Thailand.... Looks like it's been ruined by all the tourists and those full moon parties look a bit dark and sinister

Australia.. some parts look lovely but just seems a bit British and dare I say it racist...

Dubai. India. Thailand. Disneyworld. Turkey.

Miami, there were rats everywhere you walked at night. You stay at a 5 star hotel and just outside there are hundreds of rats and naked homeless people sleeping at a bus stop. So sad.

EmbMonStu · 30/01/2021 13:09

I’ve the opposite problem in that I’m always raving about Ljubljana/Lake Bled and literally no one ever says “ooh that’s sounds nice, I think I will go”. Why does no one want to go??

HarrietSchulenberg · 30/01/2021 13:13

Any type of couples only luxury beach development, more so if it's gated to keep the locals out.

Dubai
Las Vegas - been there once and have no intention of going back

Bloodybridget · 30/01/2021 13:27

@Fastedbrownie I think you didn't read my post, I wasn't at all writing those places off, I just said I wouldn't choose to visit them, but I accepted that I couldn't probably have a good time in any of them!

Bloodybridget · 30/01/2021 13:28

Bloody Norah! COULD have a good time . .

SmudgeButt · 30/01/2021 13:28

Niagara Falls. Particularly in the summer when it's swamped with tourists.

"oh look! water going over a cliff!! now lets buy some overpriced tat!"

Mintjulia · 30/01/2021 13:30

Dubai
Disney
Las Vegas
Monaco ( but I've been there so I know it's really not my thing)

Thedarknightsarelifting · 30/01/2021 13:31

I try to go by the rule of ‘don’t knock it till you try it’.

I love travelling and really miss it. When we had DC’s we made a point of trying to vary our trips to give them as many experiences as possible. I have concerns about safety in many countries such as SA, UAE, Korea, China, Turkey... I’m sure it’s misplaced but I can’t see past it.

gypsywater · 30/01/2021 13:35

South Africa
Couldnt pay me to go there

Thedarknightsarelifting · 30/01/2021 13:35

@Tisforptarmigan the whole of Scotland? I love the Lake District but not a ski fan and Benidorm is my idea of hell alongside Blackpool!

I'd love to go to Ljubljana and Lake Bled...I've seen a lovely walking holiday that appeals to me. Also, Slovenia.
Thedarknightsarelifting · 30/01/2021 13:37

Also anywhere that involves staying in a caravan, tent or campervan!

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 13:44

@Mintjulia I've been to Monaco a few times, what a strange ugly stultifying place....I don't "get" it at all. Glad it was small enough just for a couple of hours and we could say we'd been then go somewhere more interesting.

Similarly st Tropez very odd place. Don't get all the drama about it at all...

All sounds a bit on the xenophobic side!

DoTheNextRightThing · 30/01/2021 13:54

Disney World - I like Disney and all but even as a kid it just looked naff. Plus all the queueing and expensive everything. Nah.

Dubai - same as PP. Just terrified of breaking the rules.

USA - there are parts I'd like to visit in theory but I'm just so concerned about the amount of gun violence there. Knowing my luck I'd go shopping and a shooter would show up 🙄

BlackeyedSusan · 30/01/2021 13:55

anywhere hot and sunny. get sunburned in march in the uk so not a chance elsewhere.

natalienewname · 30/01/2021 13:57

Can I throw local National Trust properties into the mix.

Some friends are always raving about going for walks at these places. I just don't get it:

  • drive for miles
  • fight for car parking spot
  • pay for parking
  • walk down same boring route as everyone else dodging the anorak brigade and parents screeching 'Ottie, Ottie, come back for your lentil crisps sweetheart'
  • queue up with my own fractious children waiting for over priced baked good and coffee or ice cream
  • haul muddy, sugar filled and bored children back into the car and drive home

Oh my god, hate these places.

I just can't understand driving to go for a walk. And paying to walk along a regimented path with other people. Why, why, why would you do this, and want to do this?

(Said as a countryside dweller and people who love these places also all seem to live in the country)

bluebluezoo · 30/01/2021 13:58

South Africa

Why not? Politics?

It’s a beautiful, fascinating country with lovely people but it does have it’s issues. I know many people who boycotted as tourists during the apartheid years but interested to find out what puts you off now?

SA in the past reminds me a little of Dubai now. Everyone takes maids/nanny’s/housekeepers/drivers and their nice little safe enclaves for granted. Nice lives and good pay, but without much thought to the lives of those maids/nannies/housekeepers and all those who work on construction etc....

Frequentflier · 30/01/2021 14:05

Disneyland and Las Vegas. Been to both and hated it. Other than those I will go anywhere

nuitdesetoiles · 30/01/2021 14:07

@natalienewname I do totally get it about NT!! We're members and I do love visiting but agree about lots of the points you mention. They're stuffed full of unbearable risk averse middle class parents stopping their children from having any fun whatsoever. Grin

One of the few blessings of the current restrictions is the bookable system. Means they're blissfully quiet and you can get a car parking space. I found them unbearable myself previously.

@nuitdesetoiles

So pleased you agree. I feel I simply cannot mention this in real life, people look at me as if I'm mad to not enjoy them.

I thought I was the only one Grin
