... can you help me find a 3 or 4 bed detached house with some character (and large garden or land) for £250,000. I know it’s asking a lot! We would like something different and not new build and it can be rural, but not in a dreadful area!

Your money will go much further in most of Northern Ireland than the rest of the U.K. here’s an example of what you can get for just over budget (so may come in around budget post-negotiations)

Dazedandconfused10 · 28/01/2021 14:15

That would get you a 1 bed terrace in my neck of the woods

LifeChoices · 28/01/2021 14:20

Wow! I am bowled over by the cost of that house lurker101. I will consider Northern Ireland.

Stane Street, North Heath

Semi detached but rural enough and close to cities, rail etc

LifeChoices · 28/01/2021 14:33

Hubby is not impressed with the Ni idea, quoting racism stats. FWIW we are a mixed race family.

Ah, it’s a shame as the houses are such good value for money, but I understand and I wouldn’t move back either due to lack of diversity

nippyzippyYKK · 28/01/2021 14:42

Thornhill, Stalbridge, Sturminster Newton

BilboBercow · 28/01/2021 14:50

Note this is offers over so will probably go for more than 250k but there are over 300 houses for 250k or under within a 40 mile radius of Glasgow with 4 beds or more. This is inverclyde which is a gorgeous area.

Didiusfalco · 28/01/2021 14:58

Somewhere in Herefordshire? I mean this is adorable:

But maybe not enough land? The land bit is hard.

emmathedilemma · 28/01/2021 14:59

Do you have children? If so, be aware that the school system in Scotland is considerably different to in England so that might eliminate a country from your search if you don't want to upheave them too much.
What sort of area would you like? How rural are you willing to go i.e. walking distance to a village and pub or happy to be miles and miles from anywhere?
Do you need easy access to things like trains or planes on a regular basis? Is access to hills or coastline important to you?

Chimeraforce · 28/01/2021 15:02

Carlisle
Lake District
Scottish highlands
Cairngorms
Dorset
Northumberland

You're so lucky!

Mintjulia · 28/01/2021 15:04

Great thread. In 4 years time, I'll be able to do the same so watching with interest.

partyatthepalace · 28/01/2021 15:06

Re your husbands NI comment - if you are a mixed race family I think it might be a good idea to rent rurally before moving, because on the whole rural areas are pretty white and you might want to try out how you feel about that, and maybe research to find areas with a city with a mixed population near by - maybe some of the rural parts of the midlands or S Yorks. Will need some research.

I wouldn’t dismiss NI out of hand - great work life balance, grammar schools etc - but you would definitely want to try it out by renting first, not just in terms of race but it is v different to rest of UK and has a complex legacy etc.

CormoranStrike · 28/01/2021 15:07

I would personally move to the Isle of Bute - there was a beautiful home there but is sold last week. I was in love with it.

devildeepbluesea · 28/01/2021 15:07

South West Wales - south Powys, you can get lovely rural properties around Ystradgynlais, Pontarddulais

Everythingmagnolia · 28/01/2021 15:09

Wirral or somewhere in Northumberland

LifeChoices · 28/01/2021 15:15

Thank you everyone. We would love Scotland, but not an island. We don’t need schools, but access to an airport within an hour or two would be necessary. I’d be worried about an island, because of sea level rises! And isolation, so mainland would be best.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 28/01/2021 15:21

Have you looked at rural Wales? Brecon or Pembrokshire? Its stunning there.

snowliving · 28/01/2021 15:58

I wouldn't dream of moving to the Isle of Bute as a mixed race couple.
I would be cautious about many rural Scottish areas.
It is also worth noting that many houses that have a cheap purchase price are cheap because they need the purchase price spending again on issues.
(There was definitely an example of this recently on Bute!)

emmathedilemma · 28/01/2021 16:01

Scottish Borders is quite affordable and depending on location puts you within an hour, or slightly more, of both Edinburgh and Newcastle airports. Towns along the "new" borders railway line will be a bit more pricey but if that's not a priority you should easily get when you want in that area.
Argyll & Bute is also very affordable and whilst you might not get a character property for your budget you could probably get a big house in a stunning setting with views that mean you won't care what it looks like! It's more remote but if you're close to ferry at Dunoon then you're well within an hour of Glasgow airport.
Bear in mind if you're looking at properties in Scotland they tend to be advertised at an "offers over" price and they go to sealed bids. You can expect to pay at least the valuation price given in the home report and often more depending on the area and local market. You can only get a mortgage up to the valuation so anything you bid above this has to be from cash reserves.

LifeChoices · 28/01/2021 16:06

Thank you. I’m looking in to all the suggestions!

OP posts:
teenytrees · 28/01/2021 16:08

I too would be cautious about rural Wales or the Valleys as a mixed race family.

Sp1ke3 · 28/01/2021 16:41

As someone who lives in Northumberland, can I just ask where the 3/4 bed detached with land for £250k are? You might get a new build in a grim area but you certainly won’t get what the OP wants.
